Good question!

I bought the One Flower One Sword art book, so I can tell you that the way the earring is designed is it's more of a bead then what I had imagined while reading the novels, which was a stud earring.

There's a trick I use when I'm working with threads, where I tie a loop and use it to pull through a small hole, however it is possible that he just carved the hole to be slightly bigger. Interestingly enough, there's and identical, almost matching bead on the hilt of E-ming, although this design is exclusive to the animated series

E-ming does not have a bead in the novel illustrations or the online comic

I also had in mind a stud earring.

But, my main thought was "Ancient China didn't really have what we think of as stud earrings" as most of the earrings they had were dangling to some extent.

So my next thought was not "he took the earring apart" it was "He tangled up this dangling earring in his braid and that sounds like it would be painful"

Now I have the image of a whole surgical procedure to take the earring apart.

The way Xie Lian would no hesitatation let Hua Cheng possess him for plot purposes if he needed to and would be genuinely upset when Hua Cheng was able to be in his own body again because he’s a freak like that and would love having Hua Cheng that close to him and being able to keep him safe with his own body like he’s that insane about Hua Cheng just like Hua Cheng is about him and that is genuinely important to me.
