I fucking love doomed narratives. Simon was placed into that sub and he was never making it back out. He knew this, Ava and the crew back on the ship knew this, we the audience DEFINITELY knew this. Sealing Simon into the sub was the equivalent of nailing him into a coffin. There was no possible way he was going to make it out of this alive, he was doomed from the start. But some fucking how there was hope. Some tiny sliver of a chance that maybe, just maybe, Simon would get out of this, he would collect the information they need, he would get his freedom, he would help save humanity. We grabbed onto that hope with a bruising grip and gritted our teeth. He has to get out of this. He has to, there so much on the line. Simon himself, arguably the most nihilistic person here, dared to hope. He already lost everything else, he won't lose this. He will get out of this. He doesn't though. And thats the devastating part. We knew the second that Ava said "this is the test." Simon wasn't going to survive and we were proven right. He went out fighting though, he got the information, he made sure the black box would survive the chaos and be found, and he lost his life doing so. There's still some hope, he just won't be around to see what becomes of it.
