Ava DuVernay: "Not our job to explain to white folk" how to combat racism

ARRAY 101 will offer free learning guides to accompany TV and film productions, and the first will be for "When They See Us."

“Award-winning director Ava DuVernay is turning her powerful productions into a resource for classrooms and independent study. On Thursday, she is launching a new initiative called ARRAY 101.

It will offer free learning guides for students to accompany TV and film productions. The first one is for her mini-series, “When They See Us,” a four-part drama about the five black boys wrongfully convicted of a Central Park rape in 1989.

She said the emotional response to the series led her team to develop ARRAY 101. “So many people came up to me and said, ‘I cried. I couldn’t finish it.’ You know, they felt very deeply about it. But I think what I failed to do and what many of us in Hollywood failed to do is connect the dots between the thing you make and the people who are watching, particularly young people,” DuVernay told “CBS This Morning” co-host Gayle King.

To bridge that intersection between film and social justice, DuVernay’s production company, ARRAY, partnered with Participant Media to create what she calls a “learning companion” for “When They See Us.”

DuVernay told King she hopes the resources will empower youth and inspire action.

For those of you who don't know, this specific haka was written by a father to acknowledge his son's wrongdoing and basically tell him to get his shit together. It is also modernly used as a haka tautoko, or acknowledgement, in some contexts.

Y'all see how symbolic this is, right? It's both acknowledging current events as a show of solidarity, but also calling for world leaders to get their shit together and admit their wrongdoings and try to change things. This shit is powerful.

The riot medicine PDF going around is really good from what I can tell- all their info directly mirrors this CDC advice, although there's a lot more talking about specifics when treating people in a riot/protest/street setting.

It also very specifically addresses a number of myths regarding teargas treatments in a way I think might be better than the CDC which doesn't really spend any of time on them. In activist circles, there's a lot of beliefs that get passed around and I think it's good to specifically address them.
