There is something so exhausting and miserable about having my dashboard be flooded with posts about a murdered Native child. I am so glad to see more attention be given to organizations and efforts to protect queer Natives but the circumstances are horrific and it feels like every other post is about the terrible racism and transphobia happening in response.

I shouldn't have to see discourse about a murdered child on my dashboard. I shouldn't have to see people arguing against the idea of a child deserving to be beaten to death. Seeing these posts over and over is destroying me.

Sometimes it feels like, even in the most well-intentioned circumstances, all people are doing is digging up bodies to gawk at and use for their virtue signaling. It's so draining.

I wish the same people reblogging these things ever posted about living Natives.

I cannot fucking believe that there are people “no angel-ing” Nex Benedict because they poured water on these random girls who had been harassing them (and had been harassing them prior, despite not knowing them). If it had been their cishet kids who were being bullied, they wouldn’t have a problem if their kids poured water on someone. And now there’s psychos saying Nex deserved to get beaten for responding to being antagonized.

This always happens, a queer person isn’t a ‘perfect victim’, it’s okay for them to die. And even if they were perfect victim, it’s still somehow acceptable. This happens to every marginalized person who snaps one day due to abuse, and gets killed.

And the excuses only get more and more stupid. “Oh they were no angel, they poured water on somebody”. Yeah, after being bullied for a year straight every school day. It’s almost like every human has their limit of fucks to give and shit to take.

I hate all of you ‘no angel’ people even more than I hate people regurgitating misinformation about how Nex died, based off of what the corrupt school and the fucking bastard cops (who are allowed to lie) say. Even the cops suspect foul play. Listen to the 911 call, that’s a head injury. Dozens of people who’ve had experiences with someone getting a head injury and dying later on will tell you that.

Something about that cop saying Nex was just as guilty as the girls who beat them up so badly they blacked out and how cops treat native youth.

Something about the media calling it a fight and not a murder, not a hate crime and how MMIWG2S+ are never looked for, never investigated, never seen as victims.

Something about the media portraying them as the aggressor and native youth always being seen as the aggressor, even in death.

Something about the hospital who released them despite going through head trauma and how the medical system ignores native people, and how the medical system was created through experimentation on native people.

Something about trans youth being told to “just leave” and Oklahoma being their homelands.

Something about Oklahoma legislature and two spirit people existing in Oklahoma before Oklahoma existed.

Something about Nex’s Indigenous identity being erased in every news article, every post, and how that was the stated goal of the USA upon which it was founded.
