Having rewatched Pirates of the Carribean several times, I have noticed something interesting. Will Turner is often the only survivor of massive shipwrecks, like the one that killed his mother or the one with the kraken. Other times even when hes alone he survives drowning in ways he really has no right to, like the destruction of the Interceptor. He just often conveniently finds a perfect sized piece of driftwood or something. Remember what Calypso said? About him having a “touch of destiny?” I think that the sea could never kill him, will always cradle him and protect him, because all along he was destined to be the captain of the Flying Dutchman. The sea could no more kill him than a human could cut off their own arm.
#gonna mentally pair this with that post about how elizabeth heralds death #every man she kisses shortly afterwards dies at sea #and she sees the ghostly black pearl as a girl when no one else does #and at the start of the story elizabeth - the sea's own psychopomp - sees will floating past and sounds the alarm to save him #and she falls in love with the one man the sea will never kill (@aethersea)

Remember the scene where Salazar sends sharks to hurt Jack and then runs with his crew to finish the job? I did an analysis of this a long time ago and sent it to @daddy-salazar before I made this page, but it wasn't entirely accurate, so I'll do it again here.
V= S÷T
Speed = distance÷time
According to the novelisation, the boat with three passengers was one mile from the Silent Mary, or 1609 m ~ 1.609 km
(No information is given whether this is a normal mile or a nautical mile, so let's assume it is normal), but we don't know how far from the shore the passengers were - we can estimate that it was another mile, although that would be an exaggeration, so let's say half a mile
~805 meters
So in total, the estimated distance from the Silent Mary to the shore is about 2415 meters - almost 2.5 kilometers.
I will start counting the running speed of Salazar and his crew from this moment:
But let's take into account that they had to slow down before reaching the shoreline, so we will round the final result to a whole number.
From the start to the stop in front of the shoreline, 1.46 minutes passed, or 106 seconds.

V=2415÷106~23 meters per second
23×3.6~83 kilometers per hour...
HOW?! I don't know.
This result is simply unimaginable.
But mathematics and physics speak for themselves.
They took 5-6 steps per second
That means that one step was about 4 meters long.
Considering their physical power (according to the novelisation, they could throw people against walls and people died from injuries after a moment of being thrown)
It is probable.
The fastest man in the world ran at a speed of about 45 kilometers per hour.
This means that Salazar and his crew, strengthened by adrenaline, were able to run about 1.8 times faster.
So how fast were the sharks to outpace Salazar and his crew by so much?
According to calculations which were done in the same way,
53 meters per second
191 kilometers per hour.
More than twice as fast as Salazar and his crew

Now you can imagine how physically POWERFUL the creatures released from the Triangle are.
It's amazing.
Now the statement that you can't escape from them hits harder.

Remember the scene where Salazar sent the sharks after Jack and then ran with his crew to finish him off? I did some calculations.
I calculated that the maximum speed at which the sharks swam towards Jack was a shocking 53 meters per second, which is approximately 193 kilometers per hour! Then the Silent Mary crew ran at a speed of almost 58 kilometers per hour! One step by Captain Salazar measured almost 5 meters, and there were 335 of them. It's amazing, it shows how physically powerful they had to be to achieve such speed. For comparison, the highest speed achieved by a human running is approximately 43 kilometers per hour. This makes it really impossible to escape from them! Have a nice day! :)

the funniest thing in the entire pirates of the caribbean series is definitely that one scene in At World’s End where they have parlay but davy jones is part of it, and rather than have him stand in the shallows or something they get a big bucket of water and have in stand on it on shore
who thought of that idea? who thought “put davy jones in a bucket of water” and had the guts to suggest it aloud? and then who went “hey that sounds like a great idea!”
at some point someone told davy jones their idea was for him to stand in a bucket of water and he agreed to it

It’s even funnier when you consider how he must have figured all this out in the first place.
Some folks are asking “well, if he can avoid the no-dry-land curse simply by standing in a bucket, doesn’t that ruin his whole motivation?”, but he’s not on dry land here.
The parley takes place on a sandbar - which, for the unfamiliar, is a temporary “island” of sand deposited by breaking waves, unconnected with the shore, that spends most of its time submerged, being exposed only at low tide.
What Jones is doing here is rules-lawyering his curse. Can you imagine the trial and error he must have gone through in order to determine that this would actually work?
“Okay, do islands count as dry land? How about parts of the shore below the high tide mark? Reefs? Shoals? What if I stand in a pool of water on a shoal? Does it have to be seawater, or will any water do? Does it have to be a natural tidepool, or can it be something artificial, like a bucket?”
What I am saying is that there must have been a process.
Pretty sure that this implies that the reverse - a bucket of sand, floating on the water (big bucket with just a bit of sand), would qualify as dry land. That’s absurd, so I’m pretty sure that his lawyer pulled a fast one over the curse governor.
It may be absurd, but the text of the film bears it out. Davy Jones can sense the presence of his heart while it’s at sea, but not while it’s on land (indeed, that’s why he buried it on land in the first place: to break his connection with it) - yet placing the heart in a simple jar of dirt conceals it from Jones’ awareness just as surely as burial on land does, even if the jar is on a boat at the time. Suitably prepared vessels filled with dirt absolutely count as dry land for the purpose of Jones’ curse.
Then the reverse should also be true. If he buried it in a jar of water, no matter how far inland it is, he would be able to sense it. So by this logic, any container of seawater counts as not dry land, ergo, the bucket is a perfectly viable loophole.
Not necessarily. It’s traditionally a lot easier to accidentally get whammied by a curse than it is to weasel around it - I figure that’s why he’s using multiple layers of indirection here. He’s forbidden to set foot on dry land, but it’s technically not dry land (it’s a sandbar, a non-permanent landform exposed only at low tide) and he technically didn’t set foot on it (he’s standing in a bucket of water). It’s entirely possible that either one of those things alone wouldn’t make the grade.
okay but this all raises one further, very important question: if it’s specifically “dry land” he’s forbidden from, what about wetlands. can Davy Jones fight you in salt marshes? can he throw down in a peat bog?Swamp Battle?

Shame on me for not clarifying from the beginning, but this set up was not meant to simulate water. This was to help the SFX team animate the part where the sea goddess, Calypso, turns giant in visual call-back to ancient Greek pottery, and then escapes her human body by exploding into a quarter million crabs.
On Pirates 1-3 if they wanted a big wave to go over the boat, they just straight up dumped giant bucket-tanks of water over the actors (they did this to Kevin McNally and Orlando Bloom in the first movie) or blasted the hull of the ship with water cannons ❤

pirates of the caribbean really introduced an eldritch octopus man who kills indiscriminately and torments the dead as their poster villain and then you watch the movies and it's like, "oh no, actually the worst villain in this series is a small white british man who functions as the herald of capitalism" and that was very very brave of them

The millennial litmus test for sexuality was 100% Pirates of the Caribbean. I was 13 when the first movie came out. Literally everyone walked into that movie having been lured there by the attractiveness of Orlando Bloom in LOTR. The truly straight girls had been drawn in by his entry-level attractiveness and walked out lusting over the significantly older and manlier Jack Sparrow. The others had been unconsciously drawn in by Legolas's femininity and walked out with their eyes opened and lusting over Keira Knightley.
Important missed categories that have been pointed out to me:
People who were mature/bisexual enough to be into Norrington from the start
Bisexuals who wanted to be part of a main character quadrouple
People who found nontraditional love in side characters/Barbossa
People who caught gender envy from Captain Jack
Asexuals who just really like ships, like actual boats ok
Not yet mentioned:
People whose sexuality and/or very specific fetishes was not fully awakened until Davy Jones came on the scene
