thinking about a lake i hiked to last year that was so small and cute. i jumped in to cool off and swam out to the middle, then looked down and saw trunks of entire dead trees dozens of feet below me and this is how i learned this particular lake is 100ft deep despite looking like a pond
my immediate first thoughts were 1) damn im glad im a strong swimmer because this is a lake that eats people who can't swim and 2) i thought i had gotten past my fear of open water until right now
it looks so nice and deceptively shallow. but she'll get you

Hey there! Big fan of yours over on AO3 - do you happen to have a collection of the codices you've added to various chapters, or an index for them? I was looking for one where you explained how the callsigns and radio comms worked, but I couldn't find it again. I'm sure you wrote something like that anyway.. Love your work!
So I had a very disorganised one and thought 'I'll collate them in alphabetic order'
and then went dear got there's so many of them. anyway.
103rd Marine Division: The 103rd Marine Raider Division is the Systems Alliance Marine Corps' predominant special operations force and the c
I've done all of Encroachment's, including the updated ones for the edited chapters of Encroachment I'm still working on, and about a third of Fianchetto's. I'll keep adding.
I'm not sure I did one specifically outlining how comms discipline works (maybe an idea to do later!) but:
1-4 is usually subunits (so in Vendetta, Ranger is the infantry platoon with three squads. Ranger 1 - First squad, so forth)
5 is the second in command, if applicable
6 is the commanding officer of a unit, but they may also use 'Actual' because a lot of COs will have someone else on the radio for them, Actual means getting the actual CO.
7 is the senior enlisted of a unit.
'Over' - i've finished my transmission but not the conversation, 'out' - i'm finished the conversation. Never 'over and out' lol. 'Do you copy?' - do you hear me? 'Say again' - self explanatory, but 'repeat' is avoided because it's used to tell artillery to fire again. 'Affirmative/Negative' is preferred to yes/no because it's clearer over radio/comms. 'Roger' is yes, understood. 'Wilco' - will comply, used a lot less than roger in my experience. The format is 'Callsign being called, this is callsign calling' then 'callsign being called, callsign calling' not the other way around.
Thanks for the kind words and lemme know if there was naything else you wanted to know I'm happy to answer :)
Like a river flows, surely to the sea, darling so it goes, some things are meant to be
First converation with Jacob on the Normandy:
Shepard (Renegad): "You're here because you're Cerbrus. Don't expect special treatment."
Jacob: "Understood. But not everyone in the group is hard-line. I'm an employee because I believe in their current direction.
"Doesn't mean I don't have concerns about their past actions. Or some of yours.
"You watch me me, I'll watch you. That suit you?"
Shepard (Investigate): "What has Cerberus done to make you nervous?"
Jacob: "A lot. They've been called terrorists, and with good reason. Doubt you can find a more checkered past.
"But if the Collector threat is real, and we do something about it, Cerberus will be remembered differently.
"Or we'll all be tried and executed. Can't count on people thinking about it as hard as I have."
Jacob, what is your story?
You were part of the Alliance. Then you were part of the Alliance's unofficial group, the corsairs. You left because of too much red tape.
You joined Cerberus because you wanted to make a difference. Cerberus does things. No red tape.
But. You're aware of all the bullshit Cerberus has gotten up to in the past. (Could this be related to the lack of red tape?)
You joined them anyway because you believe that currently they're doing good. (Has Miranda told you about 'rogue cells'?)
TIM knows you're skeptical of him. You spent two years protecting Shepard as Cerberus resurrected them. (Did you ever question why TIM gave you that assignment?)
You think solving the mystery of the Alliance's missing colonies will redeem Cerberus' reputation. You're aware you might still be tried and executed as a traitor.
You have apparently put a lot of thought into this.
So what is this thought process here? What made you think a terrorist organization would let you make a good difference? Why do you care about Cerberus' reputation?
My tentative guess is Miranda persuaded Jacob to join Cerberus - she is a true believer and Jacob desperately wanted something to believe in.
Jacob isn't quite in deep enough to accept Miranda's explanations, but he's overlooking a lot because he wants it to be true.
If Cerberus saves the Alliance's missing colonies, that will justify Jacob's choice. He was right to join Cerberus. He needs that to be true or he'll have wasted the last several years of his life. He'll have done something bad instead of something good.
But. Y'know. I think the writers could have made some of these connections instead of leaving it up to the player to puzzle out Jacob's reasoning between "I know Cerberus is terrible" and "I am an active member of Cerberus and think you should be too".
