Food critic Laura Reiley of the Tampa Bay Times spent two months investigating where her local eateries were really getting their ingredients. Many of their "farm-to-table" claims proved bogus.
Farm To Fable not farm-to-table.
Last week FDA issued the final rule on Sanitary Transportation of Human and Animal Food, establishing requirements for shippers, loaders, motor/rail-vehicle carriers, and receivers to use sanitary transportation practices to ensure the safety of the food (for humans or animals) they transport. Specifically, the rule establishes requirements for vehicles and transportation equipment, transportation operations, records, training and waivers.

Food Distribution Center Modernization talk
In cooperation with Community Action of Skagit County plus AmeriCorps/VISTA a short talk on modernization by Abe Nurk and Clive Boulton.
By taking action on tracking, monitoring with appropriate technology implementation in 2015. These steps can pave the way for FSMA facilities compliance in 2016.
FSMA Environmental Monitoring for Donated Food
Not for profit food distribution center covered by the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Donation Act it is more right to monitor the facility than the food (cooler, pallets, forklifts, switches, buttons).
Zone 1 - Cooler: identify highest risks
Put a base line in place (monitoring for environmental pathogens)
Monitor the baseline, random times plus random locations.
Zone 2 - Dry, risks are covered by monitoring equipment common to Zone 1
Zone 3 - Frozen, risks are covered by monitoring equipment common to Zone 1
Will your Food Safety Plan Be Ready? FSMA’s Preventive Controls Rules requires that covered facilities implement a food safety plan that includes an analysis of hazards and risk-based preventive controls (HARPC) by September 2016 for large companies.
Join 3M’s Kevin Habas and food safety expert Rolando Gonzalez M.S to learn how to build a Food Safety Plan - “step by step” - so you increase your odds that you will be ready with environmental monitoring for food safety that meets the new regulatory requirements and also creates business efficiencies and protects your brand!
3M Food Safety is collaborating with The Acheson Group to conduct monthly webinars through 2016. The topics are centered around the new U.S. Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). The webinars will offer the opportunity for food processors to become familiar with and ask questions about FSMA.

Soon consumers in the US will come a lot closer to knowing what's in the food they buy thanks to a new standard being introduced by the Grocery Manufacturers Association. Starting in 2016, you'll see branded products with a smartphone-readable bar code (called a QR code) printed right on the packaging. These barcodes can link consumers to websites containing far more information than could ever fit on a product's packaging. The new standard - called SmartLabel - can be scanned from any smartphone, without the need to download a special app. In addition to product and brand information, the SmartLabel can provide information about whether the product contains allergens and GMO's.
The release of the final Preventive Controls rules have brought about a great deal of question on warehouse compliance, but we’ve seen very little in the way of addressing this topic. Because the rules incorporate some new direction that is important to any and all warehouse facilities, we thought it a good time to tackle the question ourselves.

It became clear that we were in need of guidance in the form of recipes, meal plans and kitchen tips. We figured if the rest of our customers were like us, they were in the same boat. And with that, the Locavore Box was born!
