Amos knows who and what he is in a way most characters only ever dream of. It's why he attaches himself to moral centers, to Naomi, to Prax, to Holden. It's why he pulls Clarissa along with him. I'm the world he was born into, the world of the Expanse as a whole, his moral greyness is tempered with that deep introspective ability. He's my absolute favorite from the series. He IS that guy, and he'll do whatever it takes to prevent others from becoming that, if they don't need to be.
