To go along with the headcanons about Zuko's belt jewel in the movie:
Zuko once visited the Earth King's palace and the Earth King asked him what he would want as a token of good will between their nations, and Zuko asked for one of the crystals from the catacombs, because "it was where he first began to understand his true destiny."
The Earth King was very flattered, but Zuko never told anyone the real reason behind the token's meaning.

This parallel came to mind when I saw this scene in the new AtLA movie. Anyone else? I think it's interesting because Zuko and Aang can both be very stubborn, but in different ways.
(Before anyone @'s me - yes, I am aware that the situations Zuko and Aang were dealing with are different. I understand that Zuko is trying to find the avatar, while Aang is trying to bring back the airbenders. I understand that Zuko is 16, while Aang is 25ish. I understand that Zuko is risking the lives of his crew, while Aang is risking the lives of his chosen family.)
I’m sorry but the only people “reducing Katara to Aang’s gf/the avatar’s wife” are the Kataang haters. Not once do I think of her relationship with Aang as the most important part of her character.
Katara has motivations that stretch way beyond romance. Her willingness to help those in need. Her dreams for the end of the 100 year war and rebuilding the four nations. Her anger towards her dad for leaving them. The fact that she had to grow up faster in ways Sokka didn’t have to(not saying Sokka didn’t have to mature as well but it’s in a different way. Her survivor’s guilt when it comes to her mother. Just because she has such a deep love for…her literal lover doesn’t mean that’s what defines her.
Like ik it’s crazy to think but strong women can be in love.
It doesn't matter what you think of her relationship with Aang. It matters what the narrative says. And unfortunately, literally every characteristic you list for her, from her willingness to help those in need to her hopes and dreams to her survivor's guilt, ceases to exist in the narrative once she and Aang get together.
Because they get together at the very end of the original series (after the entirety of the resolution of Katara's confusion and the development of her romantic feelings happens off screen), and every single thing that comes after (the comics, LoK, the movie) reduces her role to that of girlfriend/wife and mother of the Avatar's children.
Kataang haters aren't the ones who reduced Katara's role and importance in the narrative. The comics did that. LoK did that, repeatedly and egregiously. The Consumed by Destiny meta series goes into fairly exhaustive detail using every single scene featuring or referencing Katara in LoK and then the comics, and since that meta was posted, this particular situation has only worsened, to the point where the movie doesn't tell us a single significant thing about her life--not even her relationship status even though, according to the existing timeline and word of god about the character's ages in the film, she should already be married and have at least one child by then--other than a throwaway line about her being a republic city councilor that is never referenced again. (Including in LoK, which in-universe seems odd, but makes sense from a doyalist perspective considering it was almost certainly a response to criticism about Katara's portrayal post-atla rather than any significant rumination on her character and where and who she'd be at that point in her life.)
I genuinely wish the Katara we'd gotten to know and love in AtLA proper existed anywhere in the post-show canon timeline. She just doesn't. And we aren't delusional or lacking in media literacy for noticing that and criticizing it.
I may be reaching here but I think The Deserter could be foreshadowing The Guru. Here me out.
In The Guru, Aang chooses Katara's safety (or his idea of what is safe for her) over mastering the Avatar State, a power that would make him a fully realised Avatar and help him end the war and restore balance. Katara doesn't know it but if she'd known, I think she would be mad that he chose her over the sake of the world. Especially because we know how much Aang represents hope for her.
In The Deserter, he does the same thing, albeit to a lesser extent. After burning Katara, he decides he doesn't want to firebend ever again, even when Katara tells him he'll get it eventually and that she is healed (so out of danger). He prefers to forbid himself from firebending because he hurt her, even though they are at war against a nation of firebenders, and when Katara has so much faith in him and trusts he'll master the four elements.
I think we can consider it as him fleeing from his duty as the Avatar once again.

"so many zukka moments" really??? what, like zuko mentioning that tagah was attractive? that sokka called zuko's face pretty? (as if friends can't also say this.) this is not even me saying this to hate, but that's so so minimal. it truly baffles me that people will eat shit like this up, and then when someone ships two characters who canonically almost died to save each other, that's seen as delusional.
also on a separate note, kataang and zukka shippers are so determined to "kick zutara off the pedestal." if they gotta talk about it as often as they do, that means it hasn't happened yet and folks need to learn to cope better. like why is your measurement of how "good" your ship is based off "de-throning" the most popular ship in the fanbase?
Something interesting that I never noticed before is that in The Southern Raiders, when Katara starts bloodbending the captain, it's to defend Zuko.
Katara blasts open the door, the captain starts bending at them, then Zuko jumps in front of her to block the captain's fire. The captain begins to attack Zuko, then Katara stops him with bloodbending.
Which is not to say that Katara's actions are only defensive here, certainly. She went after the captain with intention. It's just interesting, because contrary to what certain people say about this episode, her bloodbending is portrayed as very controlled, not the actions of someone who is acting out of a place of blind rage.
It's also not shown as something that only comes from aggressiveness. The fact that Katara's first act on her own as a bloodbender is to stop the captain from attacking kinda contradicts the idea that bloodbending can only be used for evil.
Also, Katara is just like, so cool here. No wonder Zuko is looking at her like that.
It's also an interesting parallel to Zuko learning lightning redirection as a symbol of redirecting violence aimed at him. Katara seizes the captain's arm as he's about to attack and literally bends it away from them, redirecting his attack into something harmless. Remember that she believes at this point that this man killed her mother with firebending, and she quite handily prevents him from bending with only a few movements here.
I think if we go with the lightning redirection parallel, we could also point out how bloodbending could be used to hurt in the same way that lightning redirection could. Zuko could choose to direct the lightning anywhere he chooses, could shoot it right back at his abusers, but he doesn't. Katara could do serious damage with bloodbending if she wanted to. She could become Hama. But that isn't who she is. Not even here, where her actions often get mischaracterized to fit a narrative that Zuko is somehow bringing out the worst in her.

It's the fact that in both couples, the male lead imposes on the girl's autonomy instead of actually having an honest conversation with her about his feelings (Bear with his wish and Aang with thinking that forcing a kiss on Katara solidified his claim on her). Obviously, Obsession isn't operating under the delusion that Bear is the hero in the story, so it's a lot more honest about what a nightmare that experience was for Nikki, but seeing how Katara was written post ATLA and what her dynamic with Aang was like, it would be incredibly easy to make that relationship into a similar horror story.
Yall are never beating the misogynistic allegations. Comparing Aang to Bear and Kataang to Nikki/Bear is fucking insane. 18 fucking years of delusion and making shit up in order to prop up your fanon ship. This is why ppl can’t stand Zutara shippers.
I didn't make up Aang literally opening up a lava fissure in Katara's face because she didn't want to talk about his crush on her. Or him taking off immediately to go play a day after her father had been taken captive making sure he got away. Or him telling Katara he would be in the AS if he could because he was upset about a play. I also didn't make up how Katara's role in the post series canon is downgraded to "Aang support girlfriend". Even in the new movie, she gets maybe 30 seconds not dedicated to building Aang up (meanwhile, Aang at his big age is still insisting that Katara, who was also a genocide survivor can't possibly understand his pain as he ignores his new buddy's blatant disrespect of the woman he allegedly loves). Sure. We made it all up. Go post in the Kataang tag, you loon.
