i was thinking about the spanish/portugese deltarune translation discourse for no real reason, particularly about the matter of translating a work with a non-binary protagonist and many non-binary characters; some people were using it as justification for why such localizations aren't possible, which is of course based on total ignorance of all the ways the various hispanic/lusophone trans communities are trying to reform their own languages to include non-binary people and create a true neutral grammatical gender...

but i was also thinking about the converse of that: that an official deltarune spanish or portuguese translation would be one of a few popular works of art in those languages¹ to feature neutral gendering (of both the protagonist and the major antagonist to boot²) and as such would have an outsized impact in normalizing whatever solution the translation team settled on, which is kind of weird to think about

¹ the other big work i know of is of course TADC, which is orders of magnitude more popular... partly on account of actually having official dubs in those languages, so official deltarune localizations would level the field somewhat

² still on TADC: the only non-binary character there is zooble, who has a much smaller role and is referred to much less often than kris, so deltarune would be a bigger deal for that specific aspect

every chapter of deltarune has a secret npc who only appears if you leave and re-enter the room 1225 times while you have a bagel in your seventh inventory slot and the npc is a sentient doorknob and when you talk to them the music cuts out and they’re like “who’s that whispering in the trees, it’s two sailors and they’re on leave, pipes and chains and swinging hands, who’s your daddy, yes i am” and then within four hours there’s a thirty minute long video on youtube titled “ASGORE IS FRIEND??? DADDY THEORY EXPLAINED” and it already has 100,000 views and then a year later people call the next chapter disappointing because it was focusing too much on developing the main characters instead of explaining the doorknob guy

I know all the flowers are humans bc of how Asgore treated them but I specifically like the idea that Aqua mimics kid Kris. The cyan skin, the red bow resembling a heart or little red horns, the oversized clothing being like hand me downs from Asriel. Pretending to be human like Kris pretended to be a monster.

Kris being so hyper and bouncy as a kid, pulling pranks and being loud, all up until that Day. Asgore misses that time.

Aqua constantly confessing to crimes is almost mimicking Kris’s guilt in a weird way, confessing I did it ! I’m the killer ! everyone will inevitably know how terrible I secretly am ! <- undiagnosed OCD Kris 💥💥
