I watched Nolan’s Odyssey movie yesterday. I wouldn’t say it’s the best movie ever, and I don’t even think it’s his best movie, but I’ve been thinking about it a lot since I watched it, so I suppose that says something. Granted, I was a big ol’ Greek mythology nerd in middle and high school. More thoughts under the cut.

First, was it a completely faithful adaptation? No. That would be impossible to do in a film. Characters were collapsed and things were cut out. I thought the handling of Calypso was the most odd. I’m not upset about the loss of the Noman pun (as Nolan said, it doesn’t really work in English), and Odysseus still showed his hubris , this time by shooting the arrow at Polyphemus. I do miss Penelope testing him about their marriage bed, and Odysseus talking to his father about trees for that recognition. I also really love the prophecy about walking with an oar inland until you meet someone who doesn’t know what it is.

I saw a critique that Odysseus didn’t show his cleverness often enough. I disagree. In addition to the idea for the Trojan horse, other instances I can think of are: following a single sheep to lead to a larger flock, realizing they couldn’t kill Polyphemus and a slightly different trick to escape his cave, realizing what was up with Circe, how he tricked is men to choose the path that led to Scylla, and recognizing the trap in the temple.

I liked the ambiguity of whether or not the gods existed. Did Athena take the form of a beggar, Mentor, and a slaughtered Trojan priestess, or was that Telemachus’s hopefulness and Odysseus’s PTSD? On the other hand, the fantastical nature of Polyphemus, the Laestrygonians, Circe, and Scylla stand in contrast to that approach. But then again, he was retelling and remembering that part of his voyage after Calypso had been drugging him, so maybe his imagination embellished less supernatural events.

I did feel like Matt Damon wasn’t quite right for the role, but Robert Pattinson was excellent as the despicable Antinous.

The sack of Troy was horrifying (and loud!).

Was it a perfect representation of the Mycenaean Era? Of course not—it was definitely a mishmash, but the poems themselves have anachronisms. When I read Emily Wilson’s translation earlier this year, part of the invocation to the Muse included “tell the old story for our modern times.” I own the Fitzgerald translation, which uses "tell us in our time, lift the great song again.” And ultimately, that’s how I see it. It is an adaptation for our times. After all, what lessons could we possibly learn in a story about a people willing to take a chance on a vile draft-dodger to lead them rather than a woman? Or using pretense to start a war that drags on longer than expected? Or thinking that machismo alone is enough to win a war and complete a long journey? Or the consequences of embracing our worst nature and choosing to ignore custom and moral obligation?

the only real knitting is incredibly dense boot socks, knitting at less than 20 stitches/inch is wrong. not just "not what i like", it's incorrect. you can bake The Perfect Bread by simply spending several hundred to several thousand dollars on Tools, why the fuck would you want to "just wing it"? we'll optimize a quick buck out of these dumb old biddies by buying a catchy domain name and redirecting to our store full of dropshipped slop.

And given the laws of fertility in media, I’m guessing the reason why Anastasia Belikova was talking to the Chief Designer to find out where Sasha was is because she’s pregnant.

And given how FAM loves their generational stories, we’ll see the kid later.

In other sci-fi watching news over here: the further I get into For All Mankind the more I understand why r/ForAllMankind gets annoyed at the Expanse fans but also the more I’m like ‘hehe Expanse prequel’

Come on, that season 3 opener is very Expanse-like. I can see being annoyed especially as it moves away from being a more grounded period drama but I gotta say, as someone who loved the Expanse (show)’s aesthetic and effects budget but struggled with the content because I read and fell in love with the books first, this has been real fun. Similar vibe, no ‘but these aren’t my blorbos’ baggage

I think the biggest problem with this being an Expanse prequel is this is much more optimistic about the United States of America. FAM America is doing pretty well so far, I respect the Expanse for being like ‘ya no that’s not making it to the galactic age…’

I genuinely think the funniest thing they can do at this point is end the last episode with a big flash forward and name dropping the Martian Congressional Republic and the OPA or Mao-Kwikowski and then just ending it come on it would be so funny

Actually I lied the funniest way to end For All Mankind would be for the final season to be AI focused and then the last shot is a cylon-esque robot and then it just cuts to the credits

With the focus on the Saturn near the end, I halfway thought there was going to be a shot of Phoebe.

All this season, I was getting vibes from Kim Stanley Robinson’s Mars trilogy (mostly the first book). There was the opening “Free Mars” in the season premiere, which was a common refrain and the name of a political party.. And the trick of upping the oxygen and then causing a fire was something the Martian rebels had done to them in the first (failed) Martian revolution, which occurs near the end of Red Mars.

trinity santos is a study in fandom misogyny because they gave her all the characteristics fandoms usually salivate for in men, being gruff, quippy and misunderstood with a tragic backstory but a heart of gold beneath it all. they put all this into her AND let her be a lesbian. she's everything you could ever want in a character but she's not a man so half the fandom either hates her or constantly mischaracterizes her as petty, callous and aggressive while doing mental gymnastics to baby the male characters around her
