@detession
please make sure that wherever you’re at in life, you don’t treat it like a transitory period. don’t waste your college years wishing to already be graduated & have a job. don’t waste your single years wishing for someone to be in love with. if/when those things come, they will come in due time and they will be good. but there is nothing like looking back and feeling empty because you wasted literal years ignoring what you had because you were hoping for something better. while it’s important to better yourself and reach for your goals, don’t neglect the present because that’s where you are now and it’s your now that determines your future.
you will feel so alive again.. like so incredibly alive. i dont know when that will be but it will be. u are gonna feel so alive that ur cheeks hurt from smiling oh man oh man i promise that day is coming. you do have a future, you do have good things coming, and you’ll survive everything that’s thrown at you until you reach that day
possibly, but in the meantime, feeling numb or un-alive is very difficult
sometimes, people also feel ashamed of themselves for lacking the 'proper' emotions
but there are some good things people can do in response to these feelings
instead of doing something to injure ourselves, we can think about a tattoo or a piercing we could get in the future
we could put something spicy or very cold in our mouth or on our skin
some people keep chilli peppers and ice cubes in the freezer for this purpose
intense exercise, like running, if you can do it
some people have difficult feelings around exercise - perhaps they have a history with EDs, perhaps they have negative experiences associated with forced exercise at school: I was for instance teased as a child by my PE teacher and other children for being fat. but i decided that the real tragedy would be if i let the people who bullied me rob me of the relief that exercise brings me
i saw a quote that said “i feel like i’m constantly worrying about the next part of my life without realizing that i’m right in the middle of what i used to look forward to.” and i felt that.
no matter how hard i try i will always be that little girl wondering why everyone is better friends with eachother than her and begging to be loved
in another life we're all on the playground sitting by the fence in the grass together and we all have eachother. maybe not here but somewhere it wasn't like this.

they can try all they want but AI speed paints/art process videos will never capture the intensely human artistic endeavor of drawing and undoing and redrawing the same simple shape or line 400 times rapidfire in a drawing thats pushing you closer to the edge with every lift of the pen
AI art will suck forever because robots cant want to kill themselves
creature in fiction: *is portrayed as bad and mean*
8 year old me: but what if there was a good and nice one :0
there’s no age limit for this
youre right…………..
me at 8: but what if you gave it a hug?
me at 31: but what if you gave it a hug?
The neurodivergent reaction to bad and mean creatures: but what if someone loved this unlovable thing? Maybe it would be possible for me, also a strange and burdensome and unlovable thing, to be loved as well?

My mom was a flight attendant in the 70’s and 80’s, and she told me a story long ago that I think might resonate with people today.
In 1978, United Airlines flight 173 took off from Denver to Portland, Oregon. As they were making their descent to PDX, the flight crew noticed an irregularity with the landing gear and requested a holding pattern while they tried to figure out what was wrong. About an hour later they crashed into the suburbs of NE Portland, killing 10 people….but they didn’t crash because of the landing gear.
You see, they’d been so preoccupied with the landing gear that they didn’t notice that they were running out of fuel.
The crash led to a safety overhaul and a strong messaging that worked its way down to the flight attendants, and thus from my mother to me:
Keep flying the plane.
Keep flying the plane, guys. Take your meds. Eat. Drink water. Send that work email. Don’t spend too much time doomscrolling. Go on a mental health walk. The big scary thing will be there but there are a lot of other little disasters that’ll take you out if you let them.
chronic fatigue from mental illness and neurodivergency isn't something you can just will your way out of. your nervous system is part of your body. your brain is an organ. the fatigue is real. you're not lazy. so be kinder to yourself. be gentler with your bodymind.
I feel like a lot of people don't quite grasp the difference between being afraid of something and having a phobia.
I cannot even go near dead cockroaches without hyperventilating. If I know a live cockroach is in the house, I have to leave until it is found and dealt with.
I cannot even play games that involve deep water, like Subnautica, without someone with me to ground me in reality. In natural bodies of water, I refuse to go any deeper than waist-deep. (Pools are fine, but only during the day.)
I'm not just afraid of cockroaches and deep water, and I can't just "get over it".
Y'all have GOT to be normal about people with severe phobias. Y'all have GOT to start including us in discussions of mental health. Y'all have GOT to stop treating us like freaks for something that is beyond our control.
Phobias are a type of anxiety disorder. They can't be helped any more than any other mental illness. Some people can be treated with exposure therapy or CBT, but not everyone sees results. There are people who will live their entire lives with their phobias, and I'm one of those people.
Stop shaming people for their phobias. I don't care if cockroaches are your favorite animal or if you think my fear of the ocean is silly. Leave me alone.
Don’t let the assassination attempt take away attention from the massacres happening in Palestine more than three hundred people were martyred today
yk, I think I'm starting to actively dislike challenge rating as a concept.
"here's a monster that's totally cool conceptually. By the way, it's set up specifically to have balanced interactions with only characters of at least a specific level and to be forgettable if you're too far above that level'
giving things a CR diminishes them
if you give a thing a challenge rating you might as well fill the "environment" line in its description with "a fight against the player characters which it is expected to lose." That's its habitat; that's what it's made for.
This is the original thesis of this post, that it's disappointing to see a cool fantasy creature write-up and then see a statistical description of it that starts with "it's natural habitat is a fight to the death against a group of level n or higher PCs"
Everything else about Hasbro D&D's encounter design sucking is a tangent. defenses of HD&D encounter design systems that necessitate and assume a challenge rating system are derailing.
So setting aside the specifics of Challenge Rating, that was actually one of the design goals of 5E.
5E's Bounded Accuracy mandates that all attack roll totals and armor class totals fall within a specific range. That way monsters can be used across a much wider range of levels. You never end up with a monster that just can't hit the PCs or a monster the PCs just can't hit.
This has a lot of upside! You never look in the monster manual and say "wow that could have been great five levels ago" because every creature in the monster manual is relevant at every level.
It also has a lot of downside in that select levee of a modest town is a bigger threat to a legendary dragon then a mere four legendary heroes would be. After all, bog-standard NPC archers can hit anything in the game. Get enough of them in one place, and it's game over.
Different games and different worlds will get more or less mileage out of tiers of threats. Like D&D 3.5 probably went too far by making it so the top end threats are the people who are not threatened by the people who are not threatened by the people that are not threatened by 100 orcs. A single Marileth hits a city with thousands of inhabitants and only three people in the whole city are more than a speedbump between her and what she wants.
But you might still want one level of separation or some kind of hard counter to "500 1st-level archers" so that trying to take down a dragon with an army is the method of last resort. For example in 2E dragons of sufficient age are just flat-out immune to non-magic weapons, making it prohibitively expensive to equip a peasant army to counter them. The game others balanced encounters solely through the encounter tables for environments and by dungeon level.
The world does not have to be combat-balanced for the PCs. You can place creatures because they make sense for the location or by dungeon depth or any other metric you choose. But it helps to have a general idea for worldbuilding purpot whether armies are a major threat to dragons or vice-versa.
I think this is one of those cases where it's good to ask whether the game actually successfully communicates that design to its players! Because setting aside the specifics, I feel that this idea that everyone is roughly on the same range as far as the math goes is good design, but then giving an expected difficulty level for encounters along the side actually creates some tension between that design!
So like, the underlying math might not be bad, but the game doesn't exactly communicate bounded accuracy too well, and in fact encounter design being much more focused on presenting a method for creating balanced encounters with specific formulae might actually serve to obfuscate that design! And at the same time I feel most published adventures for D&D 5e do seem to take the view that adventures present a somewhat linear progression of encounters of increasing difficulty to parties, instead of simply presenting places and situations. (Published adventures, I feel, are not always the best demonstration of a game's actual design and where its strengths as a system lie, but they can be revelatory about what the game's designers think the expected mode of play of the game should be!)
So like, I agree with you that even D&D 5e has design in place that does allow for gameplay where not everything is balanced around a party, but the game has other systems in place that obfuscate that fact which is also exasperated by official support for the game.
Oh absolutely!
Ultimately modern D&D - everything since 3rd Edition on - is a game that is balanced around getting into a lot of fights and winning. Losing is too punishing because the systems that previously allowed parties to lose without a TPK. Therefore the risk of aiming too high with the power level of the enemies is too great, and balancing individual encounters is practically required to run these games.
The end result: a lot of advice about how to construct adventures in such a way as to make sure fighting just about everything is on the table without that being a death sentence.
Published adventures in particular need to stick close to those guidelines because they need to be able to advertise to DMs at what point all those battles will be a fun challenge instead of a foregone conclusion one way or the other. The slow decay of some of the other structures of play has also lead to a lot of railroading / fragile linear design in published adventures - nobody writing them has the tools to build a dynamic situation, so they instead provide a series of NPCs that tell you "Go there; kill things" until you have met all the NPCs, gone to all the places, and killed all the things.
To support non-level-scaled play mostly requires bringing back the game structures and mechanics that gave players and monsters more ability to avoid fights they don't want to take. Reaction Rolls so that not every encounter with a "monster" goes straight to rolling initiative. Proper rules for fleeing that aren't 100% dependent on the combat move speed of the participants, so a bad fight can turn into a route instead of a wholesale slaughter. Monsters that want things other than hurting the PCs, who can be cajoled or bribed or appeased.
That, or just getting rid of character advancement altogether. If there are no character levels and no increases in power, then there's no level ranges to worry about. Monsters are either something your group can fight given your numbers and teamcomp or they are not, and you're not going to either scale up to meet them or to utterly overpower them.
I'm autistic and I currently feel like shit checklist
Hi there. Are you autistic? Do you currently feel like shit and don't know why? Try this checklist to see if you can Fix The Problem!
When was the last time you used the bathroom? If you answered "I don't know" or "at least 3 hours ago", go now!
Do you need a drink? Go get one if you don't have one in front of you.
When was the last time you ate? If you haven't eaten yet today, consider eating A Meal, or perhaps A Snack. Something is better than nothing, eat whatever you feel able to!
Is there something in your immediate surroundings that is bothering you? If the light is too bright, turn it off. If there is an annoying sound, make the sound stop or reduce your ability to hear it (earplugs, headphones, etc.). If your clothes are bothering you, change them.
Is your space messy? Pick one area of your room and clean it up as best you can. Clean your whole room if you have the energy!
When was the last time you did An Activity? Scrolling on social media doesn't count. Try actively doing something fun! Play a game you like, read a book, make something, or go for a walk.
When was the last time you Spoke to a Person? Consider talking to a person you like if it has been a while.
How long has it been since you did something Special Interest related? Make some time to do that today. Infodump to a friend, have a nice long research session, look at related images or gifs, make art about it, whatever works best for you!
Try stimming actively! Put on some music and dance, spin in circles, go to the park and use the swings!
If you still feel like shit after trying all of these things, you might be tired or sick. Go to bed early and get some rest. Hopefully you will feel better tomorrow!
Hope that helps :)
