This is the Pretty Good Abra. Reblog for a Pretty Good 2017.

Iâm not going to deny that BDSM culture has serious issues, but the rhetoric I see folks trotting out to argue that BDSM is intrinsically abusive is a real trip.
In every case, thereâs this implicit assumption in play that no mentally sound person would ever volunteer to have another person inflict pain on them; i.e., that the mere willingness to receive pain is, itself, evidence that the recipient is being taken advantage of.
Like, have you seen what people do to themselves for fun?
We tie giant rubber bands to our ankles and hurl ourselves off bridges.
We subject ourselves to imagery thatâs deliberately crafted to induce panic and disgust.
We invented roller coasters.
People inflict physical and emotional distress upon themselves for recreational purposes all the time. On the scale of such things, voluntarily submitting to a spanking is not only unremarkable, itâs pretty darn mild!
If weâre seriously going to argue that anybody who wants to experience pain and distress for fun is mentally incompetent, weâre looking at a fairly serious rejigging of how we define mental health - and if weâre seriously going to argue that anyone whoâs willing to facilitate another personâs desire to experience recreational pain and distress ought to be in prison, well, we have our work cut out for us.
I wouldnât say that BDSM is only the domain of the âmentally incompetentâ, but I would definitely argue that it is the domain of misogynist males and it always has been.
Yeah, comparisons like this will be valid as soon as 90% of roller coaster riders are female and 90% of roller coaster operaters are male.
prokopetz generally makes interesting posts and smart points but this reeks of male privilege⌠Itâs usually men getting off on hurting women. Thatâs whatâs fucked up.
^^^ could not agree with you more! I usually enjoy his text posts, but I think his commentary on subject matter like this entirely comes from a position of male privilege. Thereâs a HUGE difference between roller coasters/scary movies and getting off on sexual violence and simulated rape and pedophilia. Theyâre not really even in the same ballpark, buddy. BDSM isnât automatically exempt from being self-harm or an unhealthy coping mechanism just bc sex is involved.
Okay, letâs take this from the top.
First off, I feel I should point out that Iâm a sub - if thereâs any spanking going on, Iâd be on the receiving end of it. So if youâre gonna make this personal and start going âlook at this guy arguing in favour of rapeâ, bear in mind that youâve just framed me as arguing in favour of being raped, not committing rape.
Second, before we get to the main point, itâs worth noting that the notion that BDSM as occurs exclusively or overwhelmingly in the context of male doms and female subs has more to do with media sensationalism than the reality on the ground. Yes, thereâs an inarguable bias in favour of male doms, and thatâs both concerning and worth addressing, but itâs not the 99/1 split itâs often perceived to be, or even the 90/10 split cited in an earlier post. The exact breakdown depends on which study youâre looking at and where it was performed, but broadly, results tends to be in the ballpark of 70/30 - i.e., about three in ten doms are women, and about three in ten subs are men.
Third, the idea that BDSM is dominated by simulated rape scenarios and/or infantilising roleplay is likewise an artefact of media-driven sensationalism - itâs basically founded in the presumption that BDSM-themed pornography is representative of BDSM in practice. The greater part of folks who engage in BDSM - again, it varies depending on which studies youâre looking at, but most peg it at around 80% - never engage in anything more extreme than light to moderate intensity spanking.
Basically, arguments like this are taking a whole range of varied sexual practices, some of which absolutely represent severe sexual abuse - youâll get no argument from me there - and some of which are so innocuous as to scarcely merit comment, and trying to treat them as a unitary mass.
Itâs facially absurd to treat a guy to likes to keep women chained up in his basement and burn them with cigarettes as functionally identical to a guy who sometimes enjoys a brisk spanking (and bear in mind that the overwhelming majority of practitioners, myself include, fall into the latter category) - and yet thatâs precisely what the cited argument that wanting to experience pain in the bedroom is a mental disorder of sufficient severity as to entirely obviate the capacity for sexual consent is doing.
Trans-Femmenine individual here, long time BDSM community participant. If Prokopetzâs view is the result of male privilege, itâs peculiar that I share the same view.
Honestly it sounds like some of the contributors on this thread have a limited knowledge of what genuine BDSM is, looks like and consists of. Iâm happy for people to pose me questions about my experience within the community.
Iâm curious what studies you used Prokopetz, have you looked into studies looking at at the demographic decide between male doms, switches and subs? As I feel itâs relevant that far more men in the scene identify as submissive than dominant.
There IS mysogny in the community. Iâve encountered it and it is worth discussing, but it is best tackled when you appreciate that misogynists try to isolate from the larger community where they would be accountable. Assuming that BDSM is inherently misogynist dismantles the very infrastructures that serve to prevent mysognists, rapists and abusers from segregating away their victims and spreading their rhetoric.
If you want to stop mysogny and abuse in the BDSM community, consider talking to the community so a better knowing of what abuse in a BDSM space actually looks like.

Ok but can we talk about how emo, as a genre, defied gender roles in a big way? Like, everything about the culture, from the guys wearing makeup and womensâ skinny jeans, to the way they got unabashedly emotional in spite of the âmen arenât supposed to cryâ narrative theyâd obviously been socialized with, was just this complete âfuck youâ to the idea that thereâs a certain way to be a âmanâ.Â
And a lot of their detractors called them âgirlyâ or âgayâ. And they didnât give a fuck! Fall Out Boy has a whole song entitled âGay Is Not A Synonym for Shittyâ, which referenced a famous Pete Wentz quote, where he basically said that if you thought his band sucked, to just say it sucked, and not be a âhomophobic assholeâ about it.Â
And, then, geez, My Chemical Romance took it a step further, and Gerard Way outright kissed one of his bandmates at concerts purely to infuriate homophobes who were at his shows.
A lot of these bands were openly for LGBT rights, for womensâ rights. I remember one instance where some band MCR was touring with asked women to flash their tits in exchange for backstage passes. And Gerard was so horrified by this, and told his female fans to âspit in the facesâ of misogynists in the rock scene.Â
Like, god, these bands were so progressive. And they still are. Right after the Pulse tragedy, Brendon Urie literally danced around in a pride flag and told his queer fans what they meant to him. Pete Wentz said that âUma Thurmanâ was meant to show his female fans that they could be âbadassâ, too. And Gerard pretty much admitted in an interview to somewhat identifying with the label ânonbinaryâ.Â
Thatâs the most lasting impact that emo is going to have. Showing fans of all genders that thereâs nothing wrong with being whoever the fuck you are, that thereâs no specific way to be a man or woman. And, god, I just fucking love that.Â

18 year old Regulus Black willingly drinks a torture potion and dies alone in a cave so that some day, someone will be able to defeat Voldemort.
Horace Slughorn (albeit reluctantly) shows Harry a part of his past heâs kept hidden for years, even from himself, which is a key part of defeating Voldemort.
Narcissa Malfoy looks Voldemort, a man who is not only notoriously evil but also has the ability to READ MINDS, right in the eye and lies to him for the chance to save her son.
Andromeda Tonksâ entire family is killed at the hand of her own sister and some other death eaters and she still finds the strength to go on and be a guardian to her orphaned grandchild.
But Severus Friendzone Snape, thatâs the âbrave Slytherinâ Harry chooses to name his kid after. Ok, sure.
