Misfortunes, we are told, have been sent to test our fortitude | Pride and Prejudice (1995)
Out of control Edwardian youths refuse to clap at production of Peter Pan, force distraught J.M Barrie to pull out rarely seen "Tinkerbell Fucking Dies" ending
You probably know this but shitpost ruining fun fact for anybody who doesnât:
When the play first was performed, JM Barrie et al were so concerned this might happen that they instructed the orchestra to drop their instruments and clap at this point, just in case
I did not know this and I'm grateful for being informed
Peter Pan edited by Anne Hiebert Alton (2011)
(sorry to interrupt joke post but) this is true!
Children not clapping did happen too, (and some were even expected to have hissed, which was later written into the 1928 playscript and 1911 novel). But my all time favourite anecdote about it is from Pauline Chase (who played Peter)'s intro to Peter Pan's Post Bag 1909:
Children love to clap their hands at the play because then they feel that they are really part of it, and you can see them holding their hands poised ready to seize an opportunity. Their great chance is when I ask them to clap their hands if they believe in fairies, and so save Tink's life. But they are very wrathful if any one claps who has the reputation of being a cynic, and once there was quite an uproar in the front row of the dress circle because of a girl who clapped. Those about her pulled down her arms angrily. "How dare you clap," they cried, "when you know you don't believe in fairies!" There was one dreadfully hard-hearted little boy who came to the theatre not to clap. That was his object for coming, and he came round "behind" to tell me so in the middle of the play. His teeth were firm set. "I won't clap," he said doggedly; "I'm not going to clap." And when the time came he didn't clap; above the clapping of all the others I could hear him shouting from a box, "Peter, I'm not clapping."
(Tink was revived each time anyway)
I am a certified hater of audience participation but let me tell you, it is almost impossible not to clap during this scene. Even as a full grown adult.
I think its funny that people used to demonize Wikipedia for being managed and updated by people. Which is bad for information, something famously managed and updated by people.

When I was a little boy, girls used to just do random cartwheels for no reason. Then one day, they stopped. Now that I am a man, no women randomly do cartwheels. This is because society is evil and killed the cartwheel impulse in their soul. They don't even spin horizontally anymore. It's fucked up.
Being asexual and racist is embarassing as fuck. Being racist at all is obviously embarassing as fuck but the amount of racism and especially antiblackness i have been seeing from asexuals recently is obscene.
One of the only asexual activists is Yasmin Benoit, a Black woman. She has raised so much awareness for the community. She was the first asexual person to lead Pride in London, she started the #thisiswhatasexuallookslike movement and is THE leading voice for the community.
And you all will celebrate international asexuality day on April 6th but we wouldn't even have that if she hadn't cofounded it.
Edit: why are you all too scared to repost this. Cmon. Be vocal about being against racism

I went to a library book sale this weekend and I found a very old book called âElectronic Life: How to Think About Computers,â which was published in I think 1975? Iâve been reading it kind of like how I would read a historical document, and itâs lowkey fascinating
Thereâs a whole paragraph thatâs like âokay, find the keyboard. Donât panic if it has more keys than a typewriter, thatâs normal. Really, itâs fine. The extra keys donât make things harder. Itâs FINEâ
Thought this section was particularly interesting:
Can the computer create something? At first glance it seems obvious that it can. Animated computer graphics, with their fluid transitions and whiplash perspectives, look strikingly new. And if one watches the machine doing animation work, there seem to be lengthy periods when the computer is acting âon its own.â
But if one observes these processes in more detail, it becomes clear that creation is not occurring within the machine. First of all, computer graphics are not unique. Computers have yet to generate anything that cannot be done by handâand usually already has been done. Second, the apparent ability of the computer to âact on its ownâ is the outcome of thousands of hours of patient human effort to refine its instructions. The computer can manipulate a shape for us if we have already informed it what a shape is, what the rules for shape manipulation are, what this specific shape is, and so forth.
You can start an automobile engine and it will run by itself, too, but that doesnât mean itâs being creative. Itâs just running.
Somebody in 1975 had a better understanding of why artificial intelligence is not in any way âintelligenceâ than the majority of todayâs intellectual minds.
you would think, like, "oh, we've already thought of all the metaphorical ways we can say penis/vagina. we've already come up with the full list of nicknames. we have exhausted the list of innuendos. there is nothing else new to be said about this" and then you'll open a random explicit fic and make the most improbable linguistic discovery of all time

**Trigger warning for some graphic discussion of injuries**
This is kind of a general PSA for something I see fairly frequently in the ER and want more people to be cautious of:
If you are riding any kind of motorcycle, dirt bike, mountain bike, bicycle, skateboard, scooter, hoverboard, anything that isnât basically just a car or regular walking, please, please, for the love of your own life, WEAR A HELMET!!!
Last week we had two different patients that had crashed motorcycles while not wearing a helmet. One wasnât so bad, some scrapes and cuts on their face and a bit of a headache. The second one wasnât so lucky, because among several shattered ribs and a broken collar bone, theyâd also shattered their nose and could barely open their eyes or breathe unless through their mouth. There was also concern of a brain bleed, but thankfully that was ruled out and shown to be a severe concussion instead.
On the converse, I have seen quite a few accidents of this nature where the person was pretty banged up, but theyâd been wearing a helmet so their face/head were pretty much perfectly fine. People that had smashed pavement or a pole so hard that if they hadnât been wearing the helmet they would have died or suffered severe skull deformations (and many other possible issues). People that were struck by cars while on their motorcycle and had they not been wearing a helmet they would have hit the ground in such a way that their neck would have broken and they would have died.
I know lots of people donât like helmets, think they look dumb or theyâre constricting or whatever else. But aesthetics are not important when it comes to life and death. If your helmet is constricting maybe you just need a different one that fits better, and you need to get it because this is LIFE AND DEATH. And even if you donât die there are many other horrific things that can happen to you if youâre not wearing one. Brain bleeds, brain damage that takes away memories or cognitive functions, brain and neck/spinal cord injuries that leave you completely paralyzed, major skull breaks and deformations that may need surgery to be fixed and take months and months of recovery and even then may not be fully taken care of and need even more surgeries to handle, knocked out teeth and broken jaws or cheekbones, some impacts can even be bad enough to pop an eyeball (this sounds like something in the movies right, but trust me this is a real concern).
And on a much lesser note, if youâre in an accident and werenât wearing a helmet, know that every single nurse/doctor/other healthcare employee in that hospital is back at the station calling you a fucking idiot. We wonât say it to your face, but when itâs just us and weâre taking about the incident or venting we are calling you every terrible name in the book for being so damn stupid. And if officers are around (like maybe a highway patrol person took statements or assisted with getting you help after the accident) they are saying the exact same thing, but they really might say it to you directly too.
This is very serious and very important, so please be safe and responsible and wear your helmet!!

Please have a moment of silence for the people who were killed instead of freed when news of emancipation finally reached the furthest corners of the american south.
have another moment for the ledgers, catalogs, and records that were burned and the homes that were destroyed to hide the presence of very much alive and still enslaved people on dozens of plantations and homesteads across the south for decades after emancipation.
and have a third moment for those who were hunted and killed while fleeing the south to find safety across the border, overseas, in the north and to the west.
black people. light a candle, write a note to those who have passed telling them what you have achieved in spite of the racist and intolerant conditions of this world, feel the warmth of the flame under your hand, say a prayer of rememberance if you are religious, place the note under the candle, and then blow it out.
if you have children, sit them down and tell them anything you know about the life of oldest black person you've ever met. it doesn't have to be your own family. tell them what you know about what life was like for us in the days, years, decades after emancipation. if you don't know much, look it up and learn about it together.
