if you want to actually start to end homelessness, you need to give homeless people unconditional homes, including when we use them to do drugs or sit around drinking. either housing is unconditional or it isn’t

someone sitting at home alone, an active alcoholic, squandering your charity, drinking all day is better situation than a street homeless alcoholic. someone using drugs in your charity house is better than them doing the same w no shelter

most of you would not like most street homeless people, I definitely don’t and didn’t when I was street homeless. for every one person who uses unconditional shelter to turn themselves around, someone else will do jack shit and very slowly, if ever, work through the issues that made them homeless, will maybe never be able to live independently. still better than street homelessness, still worth doing. ultimately either you believe that shelter should be universal or you don’t

homeless people actually can’t be rehabilitated if you want to end homelessness. we either affirm the right to shelter for the worst drunken, lying, filthy, cheating, self destructive homeless people that exist, genuinely irredeemable wankers, or we concede that shelter is not a right

Lot of leftist people often have a false perception that all homeless people are saints that just got screwed by the system (which I mean, everyone is screwed by the system except for the ones running it, homelessness as a phenomenon is a result of that). but a lot of people on the streets are there because they are the types of people society would reject. I think to actually helping the homeless, you need to understand that. Some homeless people are violent, thieves, liars, cheaters, abusive, creepy, deadbeats, or disabled in a way that results in disruptive and destructive behavior.

The point isn’t that all homeless people would be otherwise perfect model citizens if only they had a house. It’s that shelter is a basic right deserved by everyone, no matter how ill or unlikable you are or how much bad you do. Homelessness isn’t a moral failing, not because homeless people never do wrong to end up there, but because having a home shouldn’t depend on your morality (or your adherence to social structures)

The point is that shelter shouldn’t be taken away as punishment, and hey, ever notice how this never seems to happen to any of the rich people who display the same behavioral patterns as poor people who have lost their homes? THAT is the problem, not this “poor innocent little street cat” perception of homelessness you guys have. That actually hurts more than helps. It reinforces the conditional nature of assistance.

Something that really effs me up is how a large amount of society's "undesirable" adjectives are traits you can acquire due to disability.

Unemployed. Lives with their parents. Provides little to no economic value. Physically weak. NEET. Social outcast. Burden on others. Useless. Out of shape. Needs special care and attention. Over-sensitive. Medication-reliant.

this is so true, and as I discover more about myself and my disabilities I’ve been seeing it everywhere. A lot of times it’s even in small things like: picky eaters, kids who have the rolly backpacks, people who ask blunt questions, and people who correct others. those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head (and a lot of these pertain to autistic people, which I am) but you really just start to see it in everything people find annoying or undesirable

Can't cook or clean. Can't make or receive phone calls. Sleeps during the day. Bad memory. Doesn't go outside much.

Extends even to activism circles as well, and it's horrible when it does. Unable to use public transportation and needs a car. Can't walk. Needs prepared foods. "Unhealthy" diet. Needs single-use things like paper plates, plastic tableware, plastic straws. I've seen people bullied FEROCIOUSLY over these by even the most Be Gay Do Crime antifa ACAB folks you can imagine. We are not welcome here, either, and will be sacrificed to their glorious revolution as unfortunate tragedies. You want to see someone who refuses to listen in the vilest and least educated way, you can find one in this crowd just by turning in a circle and pointing. It is a virulently ableist community.

A lot of it applies to people without a steady home to live in. (Lots of them are disabled!)

generally speaking, when a marginalized person says "wow I wish people wouldn't X" they are referring to something real that has happened (and probably happens frequently). generally speaking, when a marginalized person says "it really sucks when people X" they are not "making up a guy to be mad about," they are talking about real occurrences.

just because it seems absurd to you, someone who is not a member of said marginalized group, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. you are not the authority on someone else's experiences and you don't know what it's like to live someone else's life.
