This video depicts a moment that is nearly impossible to observe: a sperm whale surfacing with a giant squid clenched between its teeth. These predators hunt at depths exceeding 800 meters, where light does not penetrate, and only biosonar directs the pursuit. Consequently, clear surface images are exceedingly rare.

This is, factually, the first footage of this that we have ever gotten. This has never been observed by a human being before in recorded history. The only reason we knew these whales ate those squids before was the beaks of the squids found in the stomachs of dead whales, and the battle scars on whales consistent with fighting giant squids.

My favorite thing about this clip is that, in the original uncropped footage, you can see her calf is right beside her, ascending from the depths along with her. Whale calves don't dive until they're taught by their mothers. It is very likely that this footage is of a mother whale teaching her calf to hunt on one of its very first dives.

When I saw this footage for the first time, I cried a little tbh.

The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli, c. 1485

What is Veneralia?

Historically, Veneralia was celebrated on April 1st in honor of Venus Verticordia (Changer of Hearts) and in conjunction with Fortuna Virilis ("Manly" or Virile Good Fortune). Venus was also a patroness of "profane" wine (that is, wine for everyday use), and the festival was an opportunity not only for both women and men to make requests of Venus within her normal domains of love and sex, but also to intercede on the petitioner's behalf to Jupiter for perceived divine offenses.

In Roman traditions, the most “sexually pure” maiden, chosen by vote amongst a committee of Roman matrons, would take the statue of Venus Verticordia from her temple to the men's baths and bathe it before draping garlands of myrtle (her sacred flower) around it. I choose to celebrate it in regards to Venus’ domains of love and sex.

If you are drawn to Venus, you can celebrate by drinking wine, wearing rose or myrtle perfume or burning incense or candles in those scents, asking her to bring love or a certain someone into your life or sex life, or by asking her to intercede on your behalf to Jupiter for anything you might have put out into the universe that you might wish to make right or make amends for.

#if you want the pedantic answer bc I’ve actually researched this for my thesis#there doesn’t seem to be a for sure agreed upon origin of the phrase BUUUUUT#it seems to be a combo of two earlier phrases ‘coming out’ and ‘skeletons in the closet’#coming out started to be used by gay men in 1920s new york bc a “coming out” was the 1st time a debutante would debut into the dating scene#so gay men would have their “coming out” when they first went onto the gay dating scene#a skeleton in your closet is a shameful/dirty secret that would often only be revealed once a person died#for a lot of queer people their queerness was something they literally took to the grave#so being ‘in the closet’ meant you were the skeleton in your closet#I couldn’t find an exact confirmation of when the phrases began to be combined but it seems to be around early 1970s gay liberation movemen#at the time a popular protest chant was 'out of the closet and into the streets’#which I think also helped to popularize the term#I’m putting all this in the tags bc I realize this is a silly post that is meant as a joke and I didn’t wanna ruin the punchline#but I also wanted to provide an answer for those who were curious
