Hereâs my pitch for the Season 3 opener.
Weâre on bus with Whitaker, buds shoved in his ears. Heâs bopping along, shovelling down a muffin while he quickly gathers his things to get off the bus.
(The Gap Bandâs âEarly In the Morningâ plays).
Arriving at PTMC Dennis crashes in to Dr Robby as they both approach the entrance. Robby catches by the arms. Hands on biceps. He gives a squeeze.
âHmmâŠâ Robby makes an impressed face. âStill helping out on that farm Whitaker?â
âUh noâŠâ Dennis dips his head. âA lot happened in the last few months, I uhâŠhavenât been at the farm much since you went on leave, actuallyâ.
With a nod, Robby throws his arm around Dennisâ shoulder. They walk through chairs and in to The Pitt together, Robby animatedly thanking Dennis for taking such good care of his placeâŠâthe plants are thrivingâ and for the lasagne he left in the freezer. Robby now raving how delicious it was, and how he owes Dennis dinner - somewhere nice, his treat, the least he can do.
Everyoneâs eyebrows raise, not only from seeing Robby in such a good mood (and nothing like how he left), but also at the sight of Whitaker tucked in close to him. Cheeks bright pinkâŠgiggling.
What Robby doesnât know is while he was on sabbatical, Huckleberry came out to everyone in The Pitt, albeit somewhat accidentally.
The first Saturday night after Robbyâs departure Dennis ended up in the ED. He was covered in glitter, purple hickeys on his neck, helping a hobbling Trinity who wore a âLive Laugh Lesbianâ baby tee.
She had somehow managed to rupture her achilles dancing on the bar, and PTMC was their closest option. Rather than let the rumours run wild, he went with a simple âyep, Iâm gayâ to anyone who asked how his weekend was.
Robby missed 3+ months of Dana trying to set Dennis up with her nephew (âheâs a lawyer you know, and very handsomeâŠa great catchâ). Months of Princess and Perlah wiggling their eyebrows whenever an attractive man was in Dennisâ care. Dennis reiterating that they werenât âhis typeâ. Months of Trinity coming up with new slurs fruity names to call him at every opportunity.
âMorning homâŠmy godâ Trinty coughs out wide eyed as Dennis turns the corner, slotted to Robbyâs side.
Robby blissfully unaware of the whispers as he happily waves hello to everyone on the floor, huge smile stretched across his face, jostling Dennis around. Dennis looking both sheepish and the happiest heâs ever been. Pink cheeks now burning red, as his eyes lock with Trin.
Behind her, Trinity hears the roll of office chair wheels.
âDidnât know he had it in him, ok Huckleberry.â Dana quietly providing her commentary as she and Trinity watch the pair disappear into the staff lounge.
âOk, back to handovers people.â Dana shouts out to the crowd.
âGuess we figured out his type after all.â Dana mumbles to no one in particular.
