Of course there’s fic in here
Shane bought so much shit at the grocery store that he’d never buy otherwise.
Cokes. Extra beer. Cheese. Ice cream. Little bags of chips — Cheetos, Doritos, Fritos, a whole Frito-Lay variety pack.
Shane wants Ilya to feel what he feels at the cottage. Comfortable, private, safe.
More than that, really. He wants Ilya to feel cared for, and he wants to be the one to do it. Fuck. They are so fucked. He is so fucked.
He’d also bought condoms, another thing he’d never gotten at the supermarket before. There was a pretty broad selection, but the lube choices were terrible. Good thing he’d stocked up on that from the online shop Rose had told him about, the one with “discreet packaging” so the mail carrier wouldn’t be fucking weird about it.
Shane had taken a turn down the personal care aisle and bought everything he needed for the shower too — thank fuck for the self-checkout — and come back up the seasonal items aisle, which had all kinds of random summer items.
Then he bought more stuff: a bamboo tray and serving platter, reusable ice cubes, a glass pitcher with a stirrer, and a set of plastic bottles for condiments. The ketchup and mustard and everything that would go in them that had been displayed right next to them, so he bought those too.
Now, back at the cottage, he’s still got five entire hours til Ilya’s plane gets in; two and a half until he needs to leave for the airport, even if he gives himself extra time in case of traffic. He’d gotten up ridiculously early, edgy and excited like an overgrown kid on Christmas morning.
Shane unpacks all the groceries and puts things away — fridge, freezer, snacks in a bowl on the counter. Then he stares down the new empty condiment bottles. They’re tall plastic pumps, almost like they’re for soap or something instead of food, but they were very clearly in the barbecue/picnic section of the seasonal aisle, so.
He pulls them out of the package, washes and dries them, and lines up all the condiments to decant them.
Ketchup and mustard are easy, just squeezing one bottle into another, even if the mustard is a little gross and watery. It’s also bugging him that there are four bottles but only three different colors rings around the top; why are two of them blue?
Mayo is harder. He should have bought a squeeze bottle for that too, but instead he’d gone for the smaller jar — less seemed better, because didn’t mayo go bad pretty fast? But now he has to use a spoon to transfer it from the jar to the bottle, and fuck this shit, it’s disgusting and greasy, and it’s getting all over the opening of the bottle. He tries to wash it off when he’s done and the stuff isn’t even, like, water soluble; he winds up using a paper towel and getting it all over his hands. Fucking gross.
But the relish is the worst, chunky and watery and absolutely disgusting. The spoon takes forever so he tries pouring it, which definitely does not work. All the tiny pickle pieces come out in one huge glop all over the counter.
Who eats this stuff? Does Ilya even like relish? Does anyone? He’d only even bought it because it filled out the fourth bottle in the set; it was hard to imagining Ilya eating it, and Shane briefly imagines issuing a “don’t you dare kiss me with that gross pickle mouth” threat — then smiles to himself, knowing Ilya would see that as a challenge and probably eat half the bottle straight just to be a menace.
Finally done, he wipes down the outside of all the bottles and puts them in the fridge, then shoves the half-full original bottles and jars to the very back of the shelf. He cleans off the counters and thinks about Ilya, here, in this space, today. Tonight. Soon.
He’s going to pay attention to how Ilya likes his burgers. He’ll file it away in the section of his brain that stores all the Ilya details, like how he always steps on the back of his shoes to take them off, left one first, and how he narrows his eyes when he’s thinking, and how he absently runs a hand over the back of his neck when he wants to calm down, just the same way he does to Shane’s neck. That thought goes straight to his dick.
He wants them to fuck on every surface of this house.
He wants to play video games and swim in the lake together.
He wants to see what Ilya looks like when he first wakes up after a real night of deep sleep. He wants this cottage, his cottage, to be the place where Ilya finally gets to have that.
Shane looks at the clock. Two hours and 43 minutes til it’s time to leave for the airport. Jesus.
Shane exhales and inhales slowly, bending parallel to the floor and flattening out his back to rest his forehead on the cool counter. It still smells like relish.
