People keep calling regular tucks pintucks but they're only pintucks when they're really really tiny. The manual I'm looking at right now says that "Dainty tucks from "pin" width to 1/4" may be produced with the edge stitcher", which suggests that pin width is considerably smaller than 1/4", at least by the standards of whoever was writing Singer manuals in the 50s.

Singer 404 manual from 1958 doesn't refer to the tucks as "dainty" but agrees on the sizes. Anything bigger than 1/4" and you need a different attachment entirely.

I'm choosing to believe the removal of the word "dainty" from the manual was responsible for the 404s poor sales. That and the fact they made it beige.
