bear never tells ian sarahs died.

he runs to ians with his second one wish willow after realising he cant have another wish with one thought - get ian to make a wish that contradicts his wish (though we have no evidence to suggest that would work - the customer service rep says the only thing that breaks the spell is death) and he focuses his whole spiel on trying to get ian to make a wish, never once says even "nikkis just killed sarah"

because then hed have to get into why he was meeting up with sarah at 3am alone. why sarahs death was his fault - he knows that, nikki told him that. he doesnt want ian to know that. hes still trying to save face after ones of his friends was brutally murdered because of him

Something neuroscience-y that helps with prose: attention is selective. A character will not notice everything in a room. They will notice what matters to their goal, fear, desire, training, wound, or obsession. A jealous character notices hands. a hungry character notices food. A soldier notices exits. A lonely character notices pairs. Description becomes character when attention has a bias.

Fantasy setting where every species of animal has One Fucked Up Trick exactly like in medieval bestiaries (e.g., panthers hypnotising their prey with sweet breath, pelicans reviving the dead with their willingly shed blood, etc.), except these are actually learned magic spells passed down from parent to offspring, so different populations of the same animal in different regions might have a different spell.

(If a species is domesticated you can teach it any spell you want, as long as you start 'em young enough; every breed of dog has a different "standard" spell, and knowing the "wrong" one is considered both a grave departure from breed standards and a potential violation of animal husbandry ethics.)

One thing that never stops being funny in Worm is the contrast between how Taylor Hebert (and by extension the reader due to most of the story being written from her POV) sees herself vs how the wider public sees her

She'll be here thinking she's just a little girl in way over her head, meanwhile the local government is printing and distributing PSAs which describe her as an "unpredictable young woman" prone to "bursts of sudden and extreme violence towards those she sees as her enemies" and the entire city is high key terrified of Little Miss First Horseman of the Apocalypse
