This is your friendly reminder that Hamas is a terrorist organization.
Every feeling you're dealing with with the way the release of some captives is being handled? The information/lack of information? The despair about the remaining captives?
It's on purpose.
Hamas is a terrorist organization.
My favorite moment from Eugenie Grandet
hope every israeli who sees this is as safe as possible and managing as best as they can. please have an absolute amazing rosh hashanah (plus the rest of the high holidays) bc l-rd knows yall deserve it. sending lots of love and thoughts of guinea pigs
I was wondering what kind of hypocritical posts people on this hellsite will make on Sep 11, given how toxic they've been about Oct 7. For most of my years in fandom, I did see more than anything else commemorative posts on the social media sites I was active on. I even made a few myself in the past, since I know from personal experience how much pain terrorists leave in their wake.
But this year I'm seeing mainly posts with... 9/11 jokes? And one post that I saw was sharing personal recollections and begging for compassion. That post had zero notes. The lack of empathy expressed by making jokes about the loss of so many lives, on Sep 11 itself and directly following it, is shocking to me. No wonder it's so easy for this crowd to fall down the rabbit hole of antismeitism, when they lack humane empathy, and simply follow whatever is trendiest on social media, whether it's making fun of the terror attack with the highest number of victims in human history, or participating in the demonization of the Jewish state and every Jew and ally with a bit of empathy for Jews.
This really is the worst timeline.
I wish more of the left would honest about their antisemitism. You don't get to cheer on a mass slaughter of Jews, chant antisemitic slogans, spread blood libel and conspiracy theories against any Jewish person you don't like, support "protests" harassing Jewish businesses and Holocaust museums, (at best) deny a year-long global spike in antisemitic hate crimes, and then get big mad when people point out your antisemitism. It's being a bigot and a coward at the same time

MAGNETO ACTUALLY BEING CONNECTED TO JEWISH CULTURE I’M GOING TO CRY ITS BEEN SO LONG SINCE MARVEL HAS MENTIONED HES JEWISH
I’m not even an avid consumer of comic books, and even I know about how we were ousted from a form a media that we created when no one in the industry would hire us.
Like how Hollywood as an industry came to be.
Jewish characters having their ethnicity removed allows for the sort of retconning of the story that gave us a Romani-Jewish brother & sister working for the Nazis.
Magneto & Magda’s own grandchildren. The grandchildren of two Shoah survivors who met in Auschwitz. Working for the Nazis. Because they were no longer Jewish or Romani.
And these widely messed up holocaust-inversion-adjacent bizaro-plot redirects, no longer mattered enough to anyone to stop them. Not in the writers room, not in the fanverse. Not outside of the Jewish community, anyway.
We were ousted from the media that we created based on our history, and there was no one left around to care enough about us to stop that storyline from happenig. And then being picked up by conspiracy theorists, and spread across the internet until we have the fun accusations that get shouted at us to this very day.
So seeing this kind of Jewish representation in a story written by Jews, in the shape of a Jewish art form, at a time when so many want to distance themselves from us…
This is a gift from previous generations, to us right now.
Some real l’dor v’dor shit.
My Jewish friends, I have seen the world ignore, laugh at, justify, and further perpetuate your pain and trauma for almost an entire year. I am heartbroken by how we have treated you.
Most of us like to think we’re decent, compassionate people who care about justice and humanity. I have seen *very little* decency, compassion, or humanity toward you. At a time when we all should have stood beside you, said “your grief is our grief, humanity’s grief” we betrayed you profoundly. We decided that treating you like human beings had gone on long enough, and fell back on the most ancient and vicious of hatreds.
My Jewish friends, I see your pain and your grief. I see your strength and your hope and your somehow unceasing capacity for finding joy in the darkest and bleakest of times.
And I will stand with you, always 💙

Reblogging again because I just realized that if I had this advice in high school I would’ve never made a tumblr account.
Also works for most of those news sites like WSJ or NYT that only let you read a little bit, or block adblockers. Also some disable the scroll bar but if you go to the right side of the console after hitting F12 and look for the CSS element “overflow” and change it from “hidden” to “visible” then you can continue scrolling for free. Might have to click around on different parts of the page to find it, but it should work.
There’s also a Firefox/Chrome extension called Behind The Overlay that does all that with one mouse click. Used it for years; what a time saver.
And if you encounter a true paywall, use Archive.Today to bypass it. Just paste the paywalled url into the blue “search archived snapshots” box near the bottom:
Have you ever heard anyone talking about the moral lesson of slavery? Have you ever seen black people being judged for “not learning the lesson of slavery”? How about the Rwanda genocide, have you ever witnessed it conceptualized not as mass murder of way too many individuals, but rather as an event that happened to teach us all something? Have you ever come across a Chinese person being vilified for not holding the “right” political stance or convicting that’s supposedly the lesson from the Nanjing massacre?
No?
Then stop doing that to Jewish people with the Holocaust. Collective atrocities and traumas are just that. Don’t be complicit in weaponizing these against their Jewish victims.
Thank you to the people who told me they had heard black people and other minorities spoken to this way. In case it’s not clear, I didn’t know that this has happened to others, and I find the fact that it has abhorrent, too. Hearing that this is being done to other groups as well is actually robbing me of another little piece of my faith in humanity. -_-
To the Nonnie who said that their people being spoken to this way is how they became pro-Israel: I’m so sorry this horrific attitude was inflicted on all of you as well, and I appreciate the way it helped you be empathetic to Jews, because the latter is not obvious. Too many people can see how other marginalized groups are treated (or how they think those should be treated), and not draw conclusions regarding Jews, without realizing that this differential treatment is exactly anti-Jewish discrimination, or in other words, it’s a manifestation of antisemitism. So kudos to you for being better than that.
Still, when I look at why I was under the impression that this vile attitude isn’t applied to other minority groups, it’s because I haven’t seen it being done ever, anywhere in social or mainstream media that I’m exposed to, while this idea that the Holocaust is some moral lesson, and it’s OK to vilify Jews who “didn’t learn it,” I’ve seen that repeated in so many spaces, openly and publicly, without any shame, and without anyone seemingly aware of how wrong it is. Now, it could be that that’s just my personal experience, of this being more commonly done to Jews and being more socially acceptable, maybe it’s just born from my subjective experience. But then I think about how this notion applied to Jews and the Holocaust was an entire acceptance speech at the Oscars this year, the world’s most important and watched awards ceremony, and I tend to think it’s not just me. This might be done to other marginalized groups as well, and very much shouldn’t, but it’s not as mainstream with non-Jewish groups. I hope that most people who read this post were immediately clear on why it’s wrong to, for example, de-humanize the victims of slavery by turning them into a general lesson that benefits the evolvement of others, and that this makes us stop and ask ourselves why are we as a society (not necessarily us directive) relatively used to it being done so frequently to Jews.
tbh pre Oct.7 I would have responded to the “are there white Jews” question with “its complicated” but now my answer is just simply “no”
yeah, you loose the white privilege to anti semitism, your culture changes, how you view yourself in relation to others changes, the people you choose to be with.. etc
it feels complicated at first but frankly it’s just no. white passing jews do have more privileges in some ways, (beauty standards most remarkably), but they still do not have the same privilege as a white person.
i personally feel that ‘white’ is truly a sort of societal concept, and it probably is. most of that concept was made by white supremacists anyway, (if i remember correctly). it’s truly just a specific advantage in my mind.
feel free to correct me if you feel i derailed or was incorrect :)
yes this is part of where i was going with this! if a Jew “looks white,” they lose that “whiteness” the moment they become a visible Jew ie with a kippah, a mention of Judaism that goes beyond a simple “haha yeah bagels” ETC
I am married to a Jew and I am seriously considering converting. Ever since our lives joined, I have been more-sharply aware of antisemitic comments and "jokes". Now that I'm working with teenagers (they make up half the grocery store staff), I definitely hear way more comments, especially regarding my aptitude for working the cash register.
I am considering what squidgirl said about becoming visually a Jew.
I am not visually Jewish, I am not Jewish, but my ears are becoming more attuned to what is said about Jews.
I'm visually white, but I'm Latina, a bit estranged from Latino culture. Most of my coworkers are Latino, and I try hard to fit with them and reclaim some identity. I am learning a lot about bigotry within the Latino community, who feels superior to whom, etc. It's wild. It's completely new to me.
These things (Jewish and Latin identities, in general, I am not calling myself Jewish) are rather connected for me right now, as I am learning so much from my job at the grocery store.
As a white American dude who has been atheist/agnostic most of my life, and was raised in a decisively culturally Christian household, who is decently familiar with American history in general and the struggles for civil rights... Sure, some Jews can pass for white on a visual inspection. So a given Jew that can do so won't have the experience of, say, being followed in a store to watch for stealing, or being questioned by a police officer because they don't 'look like they're from the neighborhood'. And those are advantages, compared to those who don't enjoy them! But they're not free advantages. They come with an asterisk, and that asterisk is that when it's known that this person who is capable of passing as a white person is a Jew, there is more suspicion. There's now not only all of the baggage of antisemitism, there's something more specific to this particular individual: 'they tricked me!' They're sinister. That's the asterisk. That's the cost of being able to pass as white on a casual visual inspection. I suppose it's handy if you're traveling or something, and you're not gonna see that random store greeter or police officer again. It's different, though, when that's where you live or work. And anyway, complaints about Jewish whiteness go hand in hand with dishonesty, because there ain't a Westerner out there of any significant years who ain't heard, at some point from someone, that 'that person does/does not Look Jewish'.
I got in so much trouble (even from other self-identified “White Jews”) for saying essentially the above pre-Oct 7th. Someone once even accused me of promoting “Nazi race science” for saying that even light-skinned Jews experience racism under White Supremacy for being Jewish
tbh even the idea that “White passing” Jews have more privileges in some ways is just wrong. What is being called “passing” is erasure & closeting, and any apparent “privileges ” that come with it a) are tradeoffs, only proportional to that erasure, b) come with heavy costs, including the psychological & sociological toll of self-erasure & assimilation, and c) (as jraker4 pointed out) come with interest when you are “found out” and the bill antisemites seem to believe they’re owed comes due.
if living at the intersection of multiple invisible identities has taught me anything, it is that invisibility is part of the oppression, not an exception to it. every barrier you think that erasure will help you bypass is simply being delayed to the moment you inevitably become visible, with the addition of an extra barrier from any needs-based assistance that does exist (because you’re privileged, remember?). every “pro” of passing is a con waiting to reveal itself and charge interest. Passing privilege does not exist. It is simply another side of the same coin.
Often when I say something like this it’s met with something along the lines of “Well, it’s complicated”. It isn’t. It’s a glass onion—something that may appear complex but is actually transparent and deceptively straightforward. It’s just oppression with extra steps. It may work differently than other modes of oppression, but it is no less oppressive.
