Oh, how quickly the past is forgotten.

They are part of the reason A03 is a thing now. Not the whole reason, but part of it.

The Great Purges of 2002 and 2012 are when ff.net got a wild hair up their ass about THINK OF THE CHILDREN and nuked any fic posted on there that was explicit. Thousands upon thousands of nc-17 smutfics were lost.

It’s what led to the creation of alternate hosting sites for smutty fic…AdultFanfiction was the one I went to…but thousands of fics would never be recovered.

THE OTW WAS CREATED BY FANS SO WE’D HAVE AN ARCHIVE THAT WASN’T SUBJECT TO CORPORATE REVIEW.

Nonprofit, so that nobody could ever say, “this isn’t making enough money; it’s getting shut down.” (See: Geocities, Quizilla, Figment, G+.) With lawyers involved and a firm awareness of the legalities of fanfic, so nobody would decide “we’ve gotten a nasty letter from a megacorporation with lawyers, so we’re hiding because we can’t afford to face a lawsuit. (Jedi Hurtaholics, Trevizo’s Millennium site.) With teams, so that an argument between co-mods didn’t result in the destruction of a whole archive. (Gryffindor Tower, Detention.)

AO3 IS OUR SITE.

It is by fans, for fans. Fans do all the coding. All the legal paperwork. All the abuse/tos violation complaints. Fans make all the choices about policies. Fans decide how to run the fundraisers. Fans write the blog posts. All the volunteer staff are fans; all the people who train them are fans. Fans wrangle all the tags.

(And the other OTW projects, too. Fans manage the entries at Fanlore. Fans run the Open Doors project. Fans publish Transformative Works and Cultures.)

EVERYONE WORKING FOR THE OTW LOVES FANDOM. Wants it to survive. Wants it to be awesome for everyone.

(Knows that it can’t be awesome for everyone; some approaches to fandom just clash hard. But they strive to minimize those clashes as much as possible, because they love fandom.)

AO3 is not some company that decided, “we’ll make a site for fanfic and then…” I don’t know what people are thinking is the reason. Money? Data harvesting? Tax shelter? Amusement and pity?

Nope; AO3 was fans saying, “Livejournal sucks; we’re tired of this fucked-up ‘rebuild every three years’ garbage; WE NEED TO OWN THE DAMN SERVERS.”

That’s the “of our own” part of the name. OTW isn’t a “them” running the site “for us.” It’s “us” making places for “us” to share what we love with others of “us.”

CAN CONFIRM. I was there in the dark times. I remember the purges. The fights. The servers wiped and the sites removed and the thousands upon thousands of works lost. I remember how hopeless it felt, like every time we got something going, it was doomed to failure. What was the point of even trying to create something if it would just be deleted anyway?

Y'all think fandom infighting is bad now? Picture it with sites where the ban system worked like YouTube and TikTok - you could get slapped with one for any reason or no reason at all. No way to appeal it. Picture it with fans getting in legal trouble because someone didn’t like their work and reported it. Picture it with people getting sued over fanfiction. Because it happened.

That’s why so many fics written by oldtimers like me have that knee-jerk, “I own nothing, please don’t sue.” There was a time when that was necessary.

AO3 changed all that. No more crashes, no more purges, and at least some protection under the law. (We all knew the bit where fanfic is technically covered under the “parody” clause of copyright law, but not a single one of us could have made a case in court cause the thing that unites fans apart from their fandoms is that we are by and large broke.) And OTW has endured not because it’s got all the funding or corporate backing in the world, but because it’s run by people who give a damn.

Always support the existence of fandom, but more importantly, support places and organizations that help fandoms continue to exist.

Hands up if you want to stop spending so much time on the internet/your phone and actually would succeed…if it weren’t for fanfiction.

Because fanfiction mostly ruined you for normal books:

-cause you already know and love the characters

-thus do not need and introduction

- meaning the first 50-100 pages a book normally needs to get all that outta the way …are feeling unnecessarily and unbearably long.

- and because you’re impatient you want to skip them but then you would miss a lot and that is just took much work

- Also fanfiction is sooo much easier and cheaper to get in such a large quantity , it’s ridicoulus

- thus you can read the same plot with different characters you love 15 times (or more) or read about the same characters with a new plot every 15 minutes (or longer/shorter)

- Its basically been in your “night-routine” for so long now, it’ll be so way to hard to disintegrated it again

I think everyone’s been so focused on hating/defending Snape, that we forget just what a motherfucking GENIUS he was (which honestly explains most of his whole attitude). The man literally rewrote the best textbook on potion making written in over a century WHEN HE WAS FUCKING 16 YEARS OLD.

Could you imagine going to your AP Chem teacher when you were in 10th grade and going “nah man, your way is ok I guess but there’s like 5 other ways to perform this titration faster and more accurately.” Because that’s pretty much what he did with the notes in HBP.

So it should be no surprise that someone of that level of intellect, who was bullied and harassed from the time their ability presented, would be a goddamn MASTER in duel-combat. You can bet your ass he’d studied that almost more than anything else. He was a master Occlumens (mental self defense and evasion), a master of Potions, a master of any and all forms of strategy, defense, combat, etc, BECAUSE HE FELT LIKE HE HAD TO BE JUST TO STAY SAFE. Why else would a flaming 16 year old come up with something like Sectumsempra? It’s def not a Potion! It’s a self defense spell of last resort. It’s fucking LETHAL. So we can assume he was heavy into combat spells and practice by that point, and given his intellect, would have had virtually unrestricted access to any books on any subject he wanted.

Love him or hate him, Snape was one HELL of a beautifully complex character, with just enough spelled out to keep us filling in the blanks for years.

December 17th - a rescue plan

Some good news, I’ve been talking to two developers now and got them working together, we just had a meeting with the guys behind an existing large (millions of users) site similar to Tumblr, with a vibrant and open-minded community, and more importantly, it has open-minded owners who believe in free speech. They think we can get something done here to rescue the whole community.

I’m not allowed to reveal the site name yet. I can tell you it’s mainstream, open to everyone, open-minded and welcoming. (It’s not WordPress or any site owned by Facebook or Twitter. It’s not Pillowfort, that’s in closed beta. It’s not Ello, that’s mainly for artists. It’s not kinkspace or fetlife, those are too specialist. It’s not jux, that seems to be closed. It’s not Soup, that seems still in development and too small.)

One of the reasons for delaying the announcement for next few days is they don’t want a “land grab” where people take the names of current popular Tumblr users over there (cyber squatting). So they are looking at ways for existing Tumblr users to keep the same names on the new site.

More info over the days to come.

The plan is, broadly:

1. By December 9th, announcement of the new site and how to secure your username there

2. By December 10th, an online tool for bloggers to copy their existing content to the new site automatically, with the same tags and captions.

3. Bloggers will need to copy their content across between December 10th and December 17th if they want to use the automatic tool.

4. My understanding is that after December 17th there will be no public access to any “flagged” posts on Tumblr, but the original poster will still be able to see the flagged post (for a short time at least). Therefore, the original poster may still be able to manually download a post to their own PC or phone, after December 17th, and manually upload it to the other site. But if you have lots of posts that will take a long time, it will be better to use the automatic tool before December 17th.

Please understand that these dates are approximate and may change for technical or other reasons.

There may be a few rough edges or not so perfect looking site design on the transfer tool. Everyone is doing their best. The main goal here is to help as many people as possible preserve access to their content, in the short space of time Tumblr has allowed us, and preserve as much as possible of the Tumblr community spirit somewhere new.

The new site will cater for photo, GIF, text and html posts. It will not offer video and audio posts, due to cost reasons - maybe in future, but for now you will need to preserve video and audio content yourself in some other place.

If your Tumblr blog has a mixture of original content and reblogs, or all reblogs, all of that can be copied over to the new site. Reblogs will become “your” original content if nobody else posted them yet, otherwise they will be shown as reblogs. The devs are looking at ways to preserve attribution of reblogs back to the original Tumblr poster, if that person also moves to the new site.

Important: your Likes cannot be copied from Tumblr to the new site. You will have to go find the same posts again on the new site, and like them afresh.

(Similarly, existing reblog comments, asks, messages and other user interaction on Tumblr cannot be copied to the new site - that’s just too much to do, in the short time available.)

If you want to preserve any of your existing Liked posts on Tumblr, you will need to either: (1) download the post to your own PC, or: (2A) reblog it now to your own Tumblr blog, and then (2B) use the automatic tool, before December 17th, to move your whole Tumblr blog across to the new site.

If you have Liked a lot of posts here on Tumblr, the gridllr.com webapp should be able to help you do steps 1 and 2A quickly, I mean download or reblog.

(Someone complained to me today about the appearance of Gridllr on a phone. It’s best to use Gridllr on a PC, Mac or Tablet with a large screen.)

If you have liked a post here on Tumblr and the original poster decides to delete it, or even to delete their entire blog, some time before December 17th, then that post will be permanently lost. So if you want to be sure to preserve any of your Liked posts, you should best download or reblog as soon as possible. If it’s reblogged to your own blog it is safe from deletion, at least for next few days.

Obviously, you will lose access, after December 17th, to all past posts you have liked, if Tumblr has flagged them as NSFW. Again, the steps (1), or (2A) and (2B) covered above will be the only way to hold on to these posts.
