Why do artists refuse to use references why why why.
It’s not a contest to see who can get by without them. It’s not cheating to look at a thing in order to know what the thing looks like.
You don’t get stronger or better by pretending. Nobody is impressed by the awkward whatever-it-is you just drew. Use references.
I don’t think a lot of people know that it’s not cheating. I recall seeing so many piece of art called out because they referenced a pose, someone recognized it, and then proceeded to shame them for it. There’s this belief, both by creators and the audience, that artists should just be able to translate the ideas from their head to paper, and if they don’t, it’s plagiarism, or not true originality (spoiler alert: there’s no such thing).
I myself didn’t start using references until very recently, because even I was under the impression that it was frowned upon. And that belief has seriously crippled and stalled my ability to improve as an artist.
As a restarting artist, I can confirm. I just never knew. I thought you were just supposed to know how to draw the body correctly and if you didn’t you had no talent.

If you can draw/paint without references, great! But if you need to use them, and feel that your art can be bettered by using references, please, use them! This is one of the biggest tips I can give to artists, is USE REFERENCES!
Anyone who would dare to attack someone for using references after ‘recognizing a pose’ is a dipshit, who doesn’t know a thing about art.

Can NOT stress the use of references enough. It’s not cheating. It’s a tool. Just like your paintbrushes and your pens.

I’m about to start designing my first “for real” show (I’ve done some cueing in high school but I’ve never designed my own plot before) and I’m absolutely terrified. I am less concerned about cue placement and timing, as I’ve been an SM for a while and believe I have a good feel for that. I’ve also programmed a lot on the console I will be designing with so I’m not really concerned about that either but I don’t know what I’m doing with designing the plot. I don’t even really know where to start. And when I get up to calling focus, I have no idea how to approach the fact that my tallest cast member is 7 feet tall, and I’m barely 5 feet (I can’t even reach the top of his head). Does anybody have any good resources/tips for picking hanging positions, focusing, photometrics, or even just a favorite gel color? The show is Pippin, btw.

There is no one right or wrong way to design lighting so long as the audience see’s what you want, and you support the work on stage. The good news is a theatre will help you make some of those decisions. I typically start with with a mix of what is called the McCandless and Rosenthal methods, as most American theatre’s and auditoriums built within the past century have these in mind. McCandless method is simple and scaleable. At its base you have three washes from two positions a warm and cool front wash on a front of house pipe, and a saturated cool backlight. Ideally The warm and cool wash are at 45 degrees from the focus point. The Rosenthal adds more colors at various angles to light the subject like a “jewel in a display case.”
To build a light plot you will need a script, a ground plan, and a conversation with your director. Your main concern at this point is how many focus points, and what environments need to be created. From there you can create a color key, which I use as the rough framework of my design. A color key shows what washes you have in a simple graphic format. Start with a blank piece of paper and put a “+” in the middle, and add arrows for every wash pointing to the plus. Depending on the resources I try to use 2 colors of front, 2 colors of “oblique” washes (cross light from front of house), 2 colors of High sides (on the ends of the over-stage electrics), 2 colors of back/top, and 3 colors of side lights on booms. For some theatre this isn’t possible, so you mix and match as needed.
For photometrics and planning I use Beamwright and the built in tools in Vectorworks. Beamwright is by John Mckernon and is available here. I choose color by sitting in a dark room with a birdie (little par can) or big amber flashlight and a swatch book or gel inventory. This is a great resource for Rosco color and gives a genera description of each.l I like my ambers to run a little to peach my blues to be saturated, and my back light to lean to indigo, but thats just me. Pick what you think “feels” right. If you aren’t sure, throw it in a light and try it on a person. In high sides or oblique crosslight I like to add a breakup gobo. It will add texture and dimensioning, and will make things look less flat.
Once you feel like you have your plot locked down, get ready to focus. Focusing gets easy when you do it once or twice, just relax and roll with it. First, you need to make sure your over-stage electrics and all of your curtains are trimmed or set to the right height. Typically that involves a conversation with the TD and scenic designer. I use Solo cups or gel frames to mark my focus points, that way every light is centered on the same spot. Stand on your focus point and make sure the “hot spot”is on your face. For tall actorsI put my hand in the air and have the light focused above my head. Once the position is good, I call for the elec to “Lock” the fixture and tighten the bolts. Next, focus (ha) on shutter cuts. Make sure that you avoid architecture and soft goods, but aren’t cutting off too much of the light. Once cuts are good, run your barrel so the light is at the right sharpness. I take mine to razor sharp and have them run the barrel until the edge just softens. Lather rinse and repeat the process with all ERS fixtures. Pars and wash lights are ten times easier, Point, Lock, and adjust the flood or the bottle. Don’t be afraid to walk around or use your body to illustrate for focus. I will use my foot to show the edge of a beam, or spread my arms like an airplane to show the angle of a shutter cut. When you’re done with a wash turn all the lights on and walk across the stage with a sheet of white paper, you are looking for no discernible difference no matter where you are. Focus is a repetitive task, so as your electrician gets a feel for your system, they will begin to pick up speed.

Our app offers an auto-worksheeting tool. Layout acting areas with the Focus Point Tool. Add Pipes and set trim heights/distance from deck. Click the „Make Plot“ button and select what kind of system you want (front, side, back), your starting channel, color, &c. The program then selects optimal angle, placement, and lens selection. Should get you a basic plot in under five minutes. Use the previous poster‘s mentioned tools and techniques to refine.
