My journal entry today...

Wanna know what sucks? Having nothing to to sad or angry or upset about but still not feeling happy. And not just not being joyful or ecstatic. But not feeling calm or peaceful or interested. I have everything I've ever wanted in life, amazing children, a great husband... I even have a fucking house in this economy! I have video games, arts and crafts, books, tv with lots of streaming services, but I am still unhappy, not at peace, uninterested... and there isn't even anything I can point my finger at to say why that is. I've tried to explain this to people. But I get "find what makes you happy" and "there's always something that makes us feel the ways we feel" etc etc. But there isn't always so I push it down because comments like that make me feel broken, just a broken person who always has to stay strong and not feel bad unless there's a "reason" to feel bad. And I often don't have a reason so I hide it. I push it away because it is easier than trying to explain to someone that there isn't a reason it just is and just trying to find something that makes me happy doesn't work either because the things I enjoy are not enjoyable anymore for right now.

The other night husband and I were watching a documentary about the yeti where they were doing DNA analysis of samples of supposed yeti fur, and every one of them came back as bears.

Anyway, the next night we watched a thing about some pig man who is supposed to live in Vermont. People said it had claws and a pig nose but walked upright like a man. Now, I happen to know that sideshows used to shave bears and present them as pig men. So every piece of evidence they gave of this monster sounds to me like a bear with mange.

So now the running joke in our house is that everything is bears. Aliens? Bears. Loch Ness monster? Bear. Every cryptozoological mystery is just a very crafty bear.

Bears. They’re everywhere. Be wary. Anyone or anything could be a bear.

how long and how many days a week do you think ER doctors work. i think they're right to want to just fucking chill. i want a well rested doctor treating me and not one who just pulled a 24 hour shift and then a 12 and another 12 before another 24, with only a few hours of legally mandated breaks inbetween.

Yeah some of us want a 30-hour work week because we've read the experimental research trials. People aren't any less productive and they are happier and less stressed and feel less leisure time pressure.

It turns out that working 40 hours a week is just too much. Full stop, no ifs ands or buts. The tiredness and loss of focus it induces is enough that you're about 25% less productive per hour when you're on a 40-hour work week, and so the extra 10 hours a week cancels out. This effect is a little bit more pronounced for white collar work and a little bit less pronounced for blue collar work, but there's functionally not enough of a difference to care. And people who are working more than that actually become less productive in total.

The thing is that you don't immediately gain the benefits of being fully rested and focused by working less on just one day, or even one week. It can even take months to settle into the pattern of higher productivity per working hour, and that's frankly miraculously quick given that full burnout can take years to recover from. And during that transition you will be less immediately productive. Particularly for people who pride themselves on being hard workers and how much overtime they put in, the notion that working less can get just as much done can feel absurd and even insulting. Because it seems so painfully obvious that you get less done when you do less, and any experiences of being invited to do so feel like they back that up.

But it's true. We are all simply working more than we need to, pointlessly, to no benefit at all. It is an appallingly pointless waste of human life.

i guarantee you the ER doc wasn't even thinking of themself when they tweeted that. Do you know how many people turn up in the ER because they're too over worked to take the time to rest and recouperate when problems are small and manageable before they snowball? Do you know how many patients are repeat ER visitors because they're told they need to take a break and rest as part of their treatment, but they have rent and bills and need to eat food, so they go right back to work? How many ER injuries are from repeat stress and strain, or caused by tired workers who went into work on too many energy drinks and not enough actual restful sleep, then made a mistake?

If we as a society had a more humane relationship with labor and compensation, I'd say 70% of my patients' problems would be solved. My job feels like damage control after capitalism has chewed these people up and spit them out at my door.

My clinic is a revolving door of chronic fatigue, chronic pain, depression, anxiety, hypertension and diabetes (always poorly controlled due to stress-induced poor lifestyles or inability to afford treatments), and so much more that I can almost always trace back to my patients being overworked, underpaid, and at the end of their rope.

The current labor climate is a health hazard. It's killing people, and it doesn't have to be this way. We built this system. We can build a different one.

One of the more profound things I’ve heard recently came from a Mr. Rogers documentary. In a clip from his show, Mr. Rogers had just visited with a musician, and tells his audience that some people play music, and some people don’t, and that’s okay.

And then he said, “The important thing is to find something you feel good about doing.”

That phrasing struck me. “Something you feel good about doing”. Most people would have phrased it as “something you enjoy doing”. Or “something you’re good at doing”. But Mr. Rogers’ subtly different phrasing leads to a profoundly different connotation. “Something you feel good about doing” may not be enjoyable–people who work in hospitals or in disaster zones might not enjoy much of their day, but they probably feel good about helping people. “Something you feel good about doing“ may not be something you’re particularly good at–you may be a terrible artist by any objective standard, but if you feel good about making your art, then it’s a worthwhile endeavor. Looking for “something you feel good about doing” can help you find a truly satisfying life path.

That phrase is also helpful with daily decision-making. Too often, I can make choices based on “what feels good.” I put aside tasks that are too stressful or avoid activities that seem too difficult, in favor of mindlessly browsing the internet. And I enjoy myself. I feel good while I’m doing that. But at the end of the day, I don’t feel good about how I spent my time. However, reminding myself to do “something I feel good about doing” can motivate me to accomplish those more difficult tasks. It can push me to do something outside of my comfort zone, to try something new that I might not be much good at. And maybe this is a blindingly obvious philosophy to everyone else. But I’m grateful for the reminder.
