do you think if we all asked really nicely they would stop making movies about the holocaust
[id: reply by @isabeau276 reading "When exactly did the last movie about the Holocaust, which is for historical purposes as well as to inform people, including idiot people, about what happenedāThe stories are endless and need to be told. How bizarre and offensive to label it a fetishācome out and what was its/their name/names. Please help clear my memory; the last I remember is Schindler's List and The Boy In The Striped Pajamas. Both were extremely important productions. I guess *you* "forget." Thanks. š š»āāļøšš·š©·š·" /end id]
hi! thank you for your reply. in my response, i'm going to be pretending i didn't notice the smug, sanctimonious, and sarcastic tone in this reply, and will instead be addressing these points as though they were being presented in good faith:
When exactly did the last movie about the Holocaust
well one recent example was the zone of interest from 2023, which won an oscar. [x] if you need more examples, might i recommend this wikipedia page: [x]
which is for historical purposes as well as to inform people, including idiot people, about what happened
i have some bad news for you about the movies you mention later. i want to bring up an important book that i think will be very enlightening in this conversation: people love dead jews by dana horn. i've already taken the liberty of transcribing and posting some of my favorite quotes, which i will be linking: on the sanitization of holocaust narratives and which narratives end up successful [x, x (oh hey look this one mentions one of your examples), x], on what current holocaust media and education is actually teaching [x, x]
The stories are endless and need to be told
nobody is denying the importance of the preservation and education of these stories. however, it's important that we discuss what narratives are most popular and why (hint: some answers include antisemitism and capitalism)
How bizarre and offensive to label it a fetish
i'm assuming this is referring to @baroque-hashem's reblog containing the phrase "i want goyim to stop fetishizing our trauma." fetishization as a term refers to the act of ascribing value to an object (in this example, a group of people) not because of the object itself, but rather because of what it represents. in this instance, the meaning of this phrase is found in the second half of the sentence: "i want goyim to stop fetishizing our trauma as if we exist solely as a moral allegory for goyim"āmeaning, goyim don't actually care about jews or jewish trauma, they only care about their ability to use it as a metaphor for their moral education. refer to people love dead jews to learn more. (also, the sexual meaning of the word "fetish" came after the original meaning [x], which has a very anti-indigenous slant to it but that's for another post. either way, baroque-hashem's usage of the term was correct)
Schindler's List and The Boy In The Striped Pajamas. Both were extremely important productions
important, maybe, but anything but representative of the holocaust, and they're honestly piss poor education tools. the latter is especially criticized for the literal harm it has done to holocaust education [x, x, x], however that certainly doesn't mean that the former was without rebuke [x (this one lists more films for your list), x, x]
i made the original post while searching for good jewish films to watch that weren't about the holocaust and just treated the jews as normal people. every list of iconic jewish films i encountered had holocaust films on it, every streaming service i searched "jewish" or "judaism" on gave me almost exclusively holocaust films. it's impossible to try to find jewish stories about jews being jews without being inundated by a mountain of media about one example of jewish suffering. (which is another thingāwe have a LOT of examples of jewish suffering that aren't the holocaust, why is it that the holocaust is the only event goyim care about, and why is it that holocaust narratives are the only stories about jewish pain that sell?) does it have to be so hard to just find some jewish stories??? it doesn't even have to be about jewish joyāi think i ended up watching the 2009 movie "a serious man"āi just want to watch something that isn't about the fucking holocaust for once! and why are so many movies about the holocaust made by fucking goyim!!! (read people love dead jews to find out)
YOU. Are a tremendous ASS. You donāt have a chip on your shoulder, youāve got a freaking redwood. If you think Iām wasting my time reading all this bs you wasted your time and trouble compiling:šššAnd donāt even bring baroquehashem into it; sheās one of my favorite people here, you FREAKING MUTT. How about reread your own damn post AGAIN you insufferable FOOL! I asked one simple question. But apparently YOU. LACK ALL READING COMPREHENSION. More, you thought you were calling the shots, huh? YOU CALLED THEM ALL WRONG, YOU RABID IMBECILE. Smug? Sanctimonious? Sarcastic?? What in the actual FK are you even TALKING ABOUT?! Do yourself a favor. Your entire life is out of control. Get offline. Take a vacation. Go to shul. Give confession to a priest, IDGAF, you nut case. Just simply, quickly, NOW. Get lost. And oh yeah. Just reply: Duhhh, I donāt know what movies, you sh*t for brains. You think YOUāRE going to tell ME something? Teach ME something?? Iām older than you, you twit. Iām smarter than you can hope to be. And quite frankly, all you do is make me sick. Thereās still a tent city here at Columbia; maybe go spew your foaming mouth diatribe at the pro pal fkrs who might need to know whatever tf it is you wasted your time with here. And hey. Good luck with that.ššššššš¤”š¤”š¤”
can we make this a copypasta please
throwback to my favorite reply ive ever gotten on a post
it's important to me that shane can't keep house plants alive for SHIT.
his apartment is death row when it comes to plants.
he read years ago about plants being good for mental wellness and air quality, and he wants that!! that sounds like a great way to optimize a house!! plants!! cleaning the air and also doing *something* for mental health that he can't quite recall but fully believes.
AND YET.
he has read blogs. he has picked out easy care plants. he has bought special fertilizers and watering devices. he even bought a fucking grow light. he has ticked ALL the fucking boxes!! by ALL metrics!! he should be so good at Having House Plants!!
and motherfucking YET!!!
counterpoint: he bought the ones with "easy house plant!" tags and is then too embarassed at easy plants beating him so he just has to try again so no one will know his shame
Shane loves green things. Loves leaves rustling in the wind. Loves how soothing it is to just be out in nature.
So of course he spends most of his days inside. Inside gyms. Inside rinks. Inside conference rooms. Inside all kinds of stuffy rooms full of terrible lights and an abhorrent air quality probably too.
So when he reads an article on how plants improve air quality and also do great things for your mental health he orders a bunch of them online. There was a "beginners package" that looked nice. The XL variety so that he doesn't just have 3 random plants looking out of place. A mix of big and small plants that promises to be cohesive and simple to maintain. Next day delivery and a bunch of plant pots that were made out of 100% recycled plastic.
He spends the next day happily mixing and matching plants with pots and reading their care labels intently. Some of them get put right next to his windows - direct sunlight. And others find spots on various counters where the light meter he also bought tells him is the perfect indirect sunlight.
The expensive bottle of plant food gets stored in a cool dark place to be used in 2 weeks, since the plants were given fertiliser at the nursery already. It's going to be great. His apartment looks so much more lived in. So comfy.
It reminds him of the cottage.
For the next week's he follows the care label instructions to the fucking letter. One drop plants get small amounts of water. Three drop plants get much more. And he has a special only for plant food teaspoon to measure out the absolute perfect amount of liquid feed per watering can.
It's going great.
He's amazing at this.
And then... Then they start dying. One yellowing leaf at a time he sinks into despair.
Switching the food does nothing.
Playing classical music is useless!
Moving the plants to different spots around the home doesn't save a single one of them.
At first he cuts the yellow leaves off and the rest of the plant still looks OK. Then he hides the worst of them when the cleaners come by. He's going to fix it. He can do this. He's Shane Hollander for God's sake!
One by one they end up in the trash. Sometimes he replaces them with a new identical victim, but most of the empty plant pots get thrown out or handed off as gifts to Hayden.
The last straggler is a single spider plant that has managed to hang on against all odds. It has lost and regained leaves and has looked close to death since week 3 and Shane is sure the plant is alive despite his care instead of because of it but he refuses to give up on the thing.
Ilya comments on it at one point. Fingering a limp, semi yellow leaf with a frown. Asks Shane if he shouldn't throw it out and get a healthy plant, and Shane shuts that shit *down* because that is his plant. That's his buddy. The one who refused to give up!
That plant is a fighter!
Proof that not *everything* he touches dies.
That plant is Hope!
Ilya stares at him like he's lost his mind, and maybe he has, but he pats Shane's shoulder and doesn't bring it up again.
the idea of ilya finding this oddly reassuring because it shows that shane doesn't just give up when things are bad.
almost anyone else would have called it and quit out of frustration, but shane cares about this plant so DAMN IT they are in this until there is not a scrap of green left. he is NOT quitting on this sad ass plant. love is a noun, but it also a verb, motherfucker.
having to break down and actually make a reddit post asking about something is just
hey r/waterbottles! i've been wondering how everyone likes to clean their bottles. i personally use a bottle brush, but i've heard good things about cleaning tablets too. anybody have other methods they swear by?
AUTOMOD: your post has been deleted because you're so fuckinggg stupid. in the future, please refer to our faq before posting your incoherent ramblings, and make sure to check out our style guide regarding the proper terms for jugs/canteens. cunt.
this is too real, I almost never participate in big subreddits with 40 rules (because they have 20,000 users) unless I really need something. And I'm very very diligent when it comes to rules and reading the FAQ because I don't wanna screw up an online social interaction and I've STILL had my post deleted from two different subreddits. One of them someone replied to me just before the post was deleted and through a weird glitch I was able to read their reply through a preview but if I tried to actually see the full answer it took me to a This Has Been Deleted page
Yeah I saw the lovecraftian horrors and didnāt succumb to madness. What- no Iām not a cultist, James. For Christās sake. What youāre forgetting my friend is that HP Lovecraft wasnāt a flexible man. His brain simply wasnāt stretchy enough to take it all in. I however, have short term memory issues. Flexibility is the name of the game when you canāt remember if you ate lunch or not. Whatās the size of the universe? Big. You knew that already, James. Come on now. You donāt need to witness the terrifying ocean at the base of the entirety of reality itself to know that. Pass the brandy.
You must imagine the character Iāve created here wearing a suit and a monocle, by the way.
During a Eldritch Horrors based tabletop RPG my character was a young dandy who wasn't particularly interested in all this monster mystery stuff but his father (my brother's character) was a researcher who WAS very into it, so Bertie went along to make sure the old man didn't get into too much trouble. It was your average Eldritch Horrors RPG in that you don't make your characters with the expectation that they will survive for very long, both the game itself and the genre are very intent on turning your characters inside out, driving them insane, and blowing them up in no particular order.
The thing was, everything in this nightmare hellscape just seemed to keep coming up Bertie because the man was too stupid to realize what genre he was in. Every time he had to roll for a sanity check whenever he saw something crazy, the dice treated him so well that he just... didn't get it. Gee that sure is a funny costume. There's something wrong with that dog. These mean guys in stupid hats are trying to hurt that young lady, we can't have that! I had not built him this way, his intelligence stats weren't even that bad, random chance just made it so that this man was living a scooby doo adventure while everyone else was being consumed by The Horrors. The final straw was at the end of an adventure when Bertie escaped from the cultist headquarters by breaking out through the mansion's front window on a motorcycle with a hot rescued sacrificial maiden clinging to his back and leading the cultists on a merry chase through the hedge maze while the other adventurers escaped. His sanity score? HIGHER than when the adventure had begun. He had found the whole experience quite thrilling and felt very good about life in general! Bertie retired from adventuring to marry the maiden he rescued and care for his aging father and delight and bemuse his friends at the gentleman's club with stories of his 'wacky' adventures. I didn't want to risk breaking his ridiculous lucky streak.
heās going to have a dickens of a time explaining how he met his new wife to aunt agatha
āBertie, youāre talking nonsense. Again. Still, youāre married, so the details donāt matter. No, I donāt care, no one cares, donāt ruin dinner by trying to explain. Thereās a good boy.ā
Health classes really ought to teach people what the beginning stages of addiction are like because a lot of people donāt realize theyāre addicted to something until theyāre years deep into it.
Signs you might be getting addicted to something:
If you go without it you feel unwell in a way that you never usually feel unwell. Sweating, tired, sleepy, headaches, irritable, depressed, etc. For example when I was in opium withdrawal I got incredibly depressed in a way that Iāve never been before or since. When you quit caffeine you might get super bad headaches even if you never usually get any headaches.
Thoughts of it regularly bother you and the thoughts go away once youāve taken it but only temporarily. Unlike with a food craving which usually stays away once youāve satisfied it or distracted yourself from it.
You find yourself rationalizing with yourself why you should break your own rules about how much you can take and how often. For example you might only let yourself drink alcohol every four days but start thinking that three days is actually close enough to four days, right? Especially if this happens regularly.
Youāre using it so often that you feel the need to lie about how much you use because other people might think itās concerning
If the substance or activity is nearby itās genuinely difficult to not consume it or participate in it in a way thatās really frustrating.
You feel bad when youāre not on it and your brain tells you āif you just take the thing you wouldnāt feel this wayā
You can only feel āwholeā or ānormalā when youāre on a substance even though itās a recreational drug
And if you read this and think you might be addicted to something, donāt panic and donāt feel ashamed. Realizing youāre addicted to something isnāt a failure. Itās more information about your health that you can use to manage your condition, whether you want to get rid of your addiction or not.
Saw the most beautiful thing at Pride the other day
Okay there are several major buckets that the majority of my job seems to fall into.
CX/Service Delivery/Account Management - this is where i run meetings and create service reports and check performance metrics and do things like build internal adoption surveys for clients or compile software installation reports or put together training resources.
Tech debt/lifecycle management - this is where i keep track of renewable licenses, hardware age, resource utilization, etc, to figure out when one of the 7k-ish pieces of hardware we manage needs to be replaced. This involves quoting and contacting clients, following up on declined quotes (because that becomes tech debt that the client carries) managing the documentation of the 7k-ish devices, reporting on company-wide tech debt, and also involves CX and account management because i have to know the client environments and budgets for about 250-300 clients.
Marketing??? - creating line cards for our products, tracking lead status, creating content for the website or newsletters, creating sales or informational mailing campaigns, creating video and written resources for our clients
Data analysis/extraction and reporting - creating reports and dashboards to track client information, handle ticket triage, provide sales and revenue reporting, etc. Making my feral databases. I've made something like 60 internal and client-facing dashboards, one of these dashboards freed up about a quarter million dollars of billable time each year because i can now do it in two hours whereas it used to take four hours a week each for four of out tier three techs.
Licensing and contract management - I'm the only one who understands Microsoft Licensing and I'm the only one who knows how to do our monthly license reconciliation. In May when I did our license reconciliation I found $8000 a month of unadjusted MRR and *today* i found another $1500 a month we just haven't been billing for no goddamned reason.
I think that's most of it, other than maybe like, CX is sales and contract stuff.
You know, it occurs to me that because I've got three supervisors and am working for a minimum of four departments, it's entirely possible that nobody in the organization knows everything that I'm doing.
Last year when there was a change to our Microsoft reseller tenant there was a problem that stopped us from being able to order licenses and after we had been submitting tickets to the vendor and Microsoft for 6 weeks I did a four hour research binge, identified a privilege escalation bug totally unrelated to the problem that i later reported to Microsoft, and was able to identify the tenant assignment that was causing the sales error and get the problem fixed within 72 hours (by weaponizing my totally-above-board escalated admin privileges).
We were the first reseller that either our vendor or Microsoft had seen with this issue. Microsoft didn't actually know it was *possible* to have this issue and used us to document it.
I put that on an internal ticket for six hours with the description "ms tenant sales issue resolution" and no further details because nobody looks at my time entries so i don't bother spending the time to explain what I'm doing.
Maybe I should see if someone in management wants to shadow me for a couple hours.
Oh, on top of this I'm also the receptionist.
i kind of hate it when they cast the same 10 superstars who are in literally everything in a movie. celebrity-sickness
not every movie needs to be an ensemble cast of timothee chalamet, zendaya, tom holland, robert pattinson, and anya taylor-joy

Apparently American rugby teams just refused to segregate their trans athletes. I wonder what everyone else's excuse is.

My wife pointed out to me the other day that apparently most people were literally only taught how to say Sorry and not how to Apologize or even that they are different things so here.
If all you ever do is step 1, not only did you not apologize, but people will rightfully stop believing you and start getting pissed or hurt.

It occurs to me that many people reading this may be too young to understand the reference. Heaven's Gate is the origin of the "drink the koolaid meme" - it was a real cult whose members committed mass suicide by drinking a poisoned koolaid-like beverage, believing that they would ascend.
I was talking in a reblog a while ago ago about how another tumblr blogger predicted a big cult boom would soon happen, similar to the one in the 70s, based on socioeconomic factors a few years back and Iām pretty sure the āai revolutionā is that cult boom - [see post].
"Drink the Kool-aid" is a reference to the Jonestown cult massacre, where the cyanide they drank was in Flavor-Aid. At least, that was the method used until the shotguns came out.
The Heaven's Gate suicides were mostly phenobarbital in pudding or applesauce. "Wore the Nike Decades," would be a better shorthand reference to Heaven's Gate because every single person who killed themselves there wore Nike Decades. Nike discontinued the shoes shortly after.
But, "Drink the Koolaid," does mean, "Participate willingly in a cult ritualistic suicide because oh boy you probably needed therapy and you wound up here, instead."
look, i work at a morgue, i get to see every day how withered and small bodies can get when someone was sick. itās awful. do you know how bone-thin a leg can get. or how a stomach really looks beneath the ribs when itās wasted away. the way peopleās eyes and cheeks press in to their skull like theyāre clinging on for dear life. they died like that, and you want to try and sell me a lie, a pill, a miracle cure thatāll make me live in that state? thatāll make my friends look like that, my family, the people i love? to see corpses in them?
this job makes me appreciate all the more bodies lived in and well-loved. please eat that second serving. please give yourself treats as much as you want. life is not long enough to suffer through it. youāll be plenty skinny when youāre dead.
