The woods were dark, cold, and inhospitable. Even the wildlife seemed to have retreated from the weather, leaving the forest drenched, grey, and unnaturally still. But it was not the kind of stillness that brought peace. Instead, it felt watchful. The sort of silence that settled over the world before a storm.
And after everything that had happened so far, Obi-Wan had become familiar with that kind of silence. Master, please hear me, he reached out through the Force, uncertain whether Qui-Gon’s absence was merely a matter of distance. Or something else. Obi-Wan pushed the thought aside before it could take root. Ahead of him, Satine coughed again and stumbled over a fallen log half-hidden beneath mud and debris. He was at her side in an instant, catching her by the shoulders before she could fall.
“Are you alright?” She looked terrible. Her skin was pale. Dark circles lingered beneath bloodshot eyes, and even standing seemed to require an effort that had not been there before. “Yes, Ben,” she replied between coughs. “I just… I just need to sit for a moment.”
Pulling his cloak tighter around her shoulders, she lowered herself onto a moss-covered rock, her fingers red from the cold. Obi-Wan studied her for a moment as she sat with her eyes closed. Slowly, he reached out and brushed the back of his fingers against her forehead. He frowned. “You feel hot.” Lowering himself to her level, he searched her face.
“I-I’m certain it’s nothing,” she replied between coughs, the fit lasting longer than before.
“No, Satine. I have to disagree. I think you have a fever.” His stomach sank. After everything they had endured—the bounty hunters, the river, the cold—now this. Obi-Wan drew a slow breath, the scent of petrichor anchoring him. What could he do? “I think…” he hesitated, weighing his options. “I think we should find shelter. You need to rest.”
“Shelter?” A tired smile flickered across her face. “Look around.” She gestured weakly toward the forest. “There’s nowhere to go. This place is crawling with hunters.” A cough caught in her throat. When it finally passed, she lowered her gaze. “I think we’re running out of places to hide, Ben.” Obi-Wan pressed his lips together. A knot tightened in his chest.
