mood while watching batman begins:
Please return us to a world where Notp and squick are used for a ship you don’t like instead of just making up a load of bullshit about how immoral it is or w/e lol
a short selection of concepts and phrases that used to be commonplace in fandom and we’d really benefit from making that a thing again:
NOTP: the opposite of an OTP (One True Pairing). It is a ship a fan strongly dislikes. The word is a portmanteau of ‘no’ and ‘OTP’ and thus is not a contraction of any particular phrase.
Squick: anything that is a deep-seated, visceral turn-off. Squicks may be shared by many fans or be specific to one; one person’s kink may be another person’s squick.
YKINMKATO, or kink-tomato: Your Kink Is Not My Kink, And That’s Okay: used to indicate support for fannish diversity and to distinguish between disapproval or kink shaming and simply having different taste.
DLDR: Don’t Like, Don’t Read: a phrase used to warn against complaints about an aspect of fic or meta. A “live and let live” philosophy of fandom, which places the responsability for avoiding content one doesn’t want to see on the side of the fanwork consumer, rather that on the creator’s.
SALS: Ship And Let Ship: similar to the above specifically about shipping tastes.
YMMV: Your Mileage May Vary: a phrase used to acknowledge that any given individual’s personal opinion on the topic at hand may differ due to their own tastes, standards, values, experiences, etc.
As the OP points out, all of these crucially imply no moral judgment of what they’re designing.
(definitions lifted more or less wholesale from fanlore’s relevant pages)
bring the healthy fun back to fandom!
HAPPY MOONDAY MONDAY!!!!
Hey. Why isn’t the moon landing a national holiday in the US. Isn’t that fucked up? Does anyone else think that’s absurd?
It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!
It’s July 20th. That’s the day of the moon landing. Next year is going to be the 54th anniversary. I’m ordering astronaut shaped cookie cutters on Etsy and I’m going to have a goddamn potluck. You’re all invited.
Hey. Hey. Tumblr. Ides of March ppl. We can do this
Hell yeah moon holiday
Ooh coming up we should celebrate
PITCH: We call it Moon Day, and then every 7 years when it falls on a Monday, that's an even BIGGER deal and we call that Moon Day Monday and go absolutely apeshit about it (the next Moon Day Monday is in 2026 so we have a couple trial runs first)
MOON DAY MOON DAY MOON DAY
moon day is 20th July!!!
Scheduling this a day earlier to remind you all and myself about the Moon Day tomorow!
my brain: hey do you wanna feel sad
me: sure
my brain: imagine the plane scene from the Incredibles but it’s Hal Jordan having to say the plane is buddy-spiked and there’s kids onboard
me: why would you tell me this
my brain: and those kids are the batkids
me: oh my god

also this is part of a disturbing but sadly not uncommon attitude that progress = women (specifically women most of the time) showing more skin. because not showing skin is "following irrational religious modesty mandates" like the man on twitter says
somehow being progressive and secular automatically means putting women's bodies on display (although of course these people would shame women showing that much skin because they chose to). gee, I wonder why...

hey! coming over to dc from marvel and the timelines are confusing me lmao. which continuity is considered “canon”?
pov: you are the batcomputer
i was just looking at that argument or wtv that reblogging was and it was honestly really funny. like. if you don’t want to read it don’t? and all good things take effort? so if you don’t want to put in effort to click a few buttons then i guess ao3 just….isnt for you? i feel like its pretty self explanatory.
My advice on that thread still stands: if you find yourself distressed, upset, furious with people online, speaking poorly of people who write things you don’t like — it’s time to log off. Really. Turn off your phone or laptop and go take a walk. Come back when you’re feeling calmer. If you continue in that spiral of frustration, it will become a cycle that’s hard to break out of.
I think that person was extremely frustrated with the tagging system, and as I said, it’s more of a them problem than an ao3 problem.
I wonder how much of that has to do with the lack of algorithm that younger audiences simply aren’t used to. Nothing is suggested on ao3, you have to find it yourself. You have to bookmark or save certain tags and build a series of searches you like. Depending on how specific your wants are, that could take some effort. Not a lot, but some!
There was someone in the reblogs that offered to sift through that person’s complaints and do the search for them to prove it didn’t need to be so hard. It actually ended up being pretty straightforward, which showed that their issues with inserts / OC’s really felt more like they didn’t ever want to see a single story like that when they search, rather than accepting that it’s much more rare than they claimed and that no tagging system will ever be right 100% of the time.
Which is all to say, ao3 doesn’t have to be the site for you. It feels like the default, but it isn’t necessarily. Wattpad and ffnet still exist. People post fic on tumblr. Some share them only in discord groups. If ao3 isn’t working for you, change how you find the fics you want or change platforms. DO NOT speak poorly of authors who write things you don’t like or imply that they are mistagging something because their fic popped up in your search. That’s a skills issue, not an author issue.
Dinner at the Diner
Every once in a while Lex tries to convince Batman to come to his side, he really just needs to reconsider after all. One day Superman will be the threat and they should be prepared!!!!
He then spends every meeting with poor Brucie Wayne imagining more and more gruesome ways he will one day wipe that fool from the face of the planet.
If he can get Batman on his side maybe he'll use WE to supply him. It would probably be a good incentive to continue working with him once the Superman problems been dealt with.
(Every time Bats doesn't accept his offer he spends at least a week attempting to come up with his own plan to off him, for some reason they never quite work out)
I love this because it kind of subverts the fandom trope of Bruce/Clark working with each other to find Batman/Superman.
Lex reluctantly recruits Brucie Wayne to help him find the Batman and convince him to join his fight against Superman.
Meanwhile, Batman (as Brucie) is right at Lex’s table, kicking his wingtips up and complaining loudly about Lex’s “stupid” plans.
That’s some platonic identity porn I’d read the hell out of. Lex becoming focused on the Bat to the point of obsession, and yet (unknowingly) hating the form said Bat chooses to take with him.
