"no you can't control the computer because uh that would be user unfriendly" <- shit they expect us to believe
Want to control your own computer? Free open source software has your back!
Easy Mode: Linux Mint or Puppy Linux
Middle of the Road: Ubuntu
Lean Mean Expert Mode: Arch Linux
And there's plenty more out there!
do not use puppy linux
Tags from above reblog are currently #running everything as root is badtm #also puppy linux is weird and jank #also its package management scares me #please dont use puppy linux unless you really wanna try something weird and out there #even tails is probably better than puppy
When an “ugh, Windows” or “corporate-controlled software's such a pain!” post crosses my dash, I’ve often reblogged with links to the Wikipedia articles on a few Linux distributions or other appropriate FOSS. I don’t usually include Puppy Linux. This time the issue is specifically about controlling your own computer. And yes, Puppy Linux gives you control, more directly and at-your-fingertips than Mint or most other distributions.
But with great power comes great responsibility, and running everything in root instead of ordinary use mode means running without the safety rails that prevent many software disasters — but with full control. I link to the Wikipedia articles instead of directly to each rec’d distro’s site to give an encyclopedic overview hopefully useful to deciding — the Puppy Linux article’s Reception section includes a selection of opinions on running everything in root across the positive-negative range.
Linux Lite recently hit 8.0. “The distribution aims to appeal to Linux beginners and Windows users, by trying to make the transition from Windows to Linux as smooth as possible. To achieve this, the distribution tries to conserve many of the visual and functional elements of Windows, to create an experience that can be perceived as familiar by Windows users. Additionally, the distro sets out to ‘dispel the myth that Linux is hard to use’, by trying to offer a simple and intuitive desktop experience.” — the Wikipedia article.
Reblogging here because of something Michael_Moceri said in a Pillowfort post: “What really grabs my attention is that they've got a ton of graphical widgets that let you dig down into customization. Want to swap out to a gaming optimized kernel? Want to remove every last bit of unwanted software that might otherwise slow you down a small fraction of a second? Want more control over which repositories you're using? Want to install a bunch of gaming stuff? There are graphical widgets for all of that.
It looks like the focus is getting the thing to work just how you'd like, but in a way that doesn't require you to do go into deep learning and research mode. The target audience appears to be people who've installed Ubuntu or Mint or something similar, been basically good with the experience, but who'd like to make their computer their own just a bit more than you easily can with those distros.”
I've recently been made aware that if you are thinking of switching to Linux or want to switch but don't know how there's a great website made just to help people migrating from Windows to Linux.
The website has a long list of supporters, so if you really know nothing and / or are afraid of trying it and messing something up you will be able to get professional help from this website.
Extended support for Windows 10 ends in 2026. Don’t buy a new PC — revive yours with Linux. It's fast, secure, and help is available to get
There's even a list of places where you can go physically to get help. All over the world, not just in the USA by the way.
Say goodbye to Microsoft treating you like you don't own your PC. Say goodbye to intrusive features you didn't ask for. Say goodbye to ads on the OS you paid for.
Save your PCs from joining the massive amount of e-waste caused by Microsoft's unnecessary requirements.

So to be 100% clear:
tumblr just added an update that requires you to verify your age in order to view "mature content". I'm not sure how they do the verification (haven't yet checked), but given recent similar updates from things like Discord, it most likely involves sending them a photo of either your face or your ID.
In addition, over the past few months, and also years in the long-term, tumblr has been incorrectly marking things as mature content. These include:
Notifications about missing persons and requests for help
Posts about youth liberation
Posts about sex education
Posts about how the mature content is poorly implemented
Posts about being trans, more specifically about trans women and transmisogyny by both tumblr and users on tumblr
Non-sexual selfies by trans women/transfems
Trans womens'/transefems' ENTIRE BLOGS even if the blog contains no sexual content
Reblogs made by various blogs, mostly trans women, which add no additional content but somehow are marked as containing mature content, when the original post is not
Posts talking about racism and antiblackness both on and off tumblr
Posts by black people, especially black trans people, that are non-sexual
And likely many more I haven't seen
In essence, this update has mandated that a majority of users (within the UK and Brazil) must either a) submit their personal information to tumblr, a website whose moderation has been EXTREMELY biased against marginalised people and who I would not trust with my ID, or b) be excluded from absolutely all conversations tumblr decides are "mature content", whether they are actually sexual in nature or not. Furthermore, anyone not over 18 will also not be allowed to take part in these conversations, or even see them, or interact with many trans women or people of colour on this site, as tumblr decides.
This update is complete bullshit designed to censor and exclude marginalised people, poorly hidden under a guise of "protecting teenagers from sexual content", and they know it.
EDIT: This update apparently only affects users in the UK or Brazil, like me. This is still bullshit even if it's just some people.

The 5-Point Trans Agenda (reblog if you agree)
Well-meaning phrases such as "Trans Rights Are Human Rights" and "Trans Rights Now!" etc are nice to see around, but they lack a clear call-to-action when "trans rights" are not clearly defined.
Therefore, we call for:
Self-ID to be enshrined in law: the right to declare one's own name and gender, to be recognized in law for all purposes; updated birth certificates and government-issued ID to be issued upon request.
Transition-related healthcare (e.g. HRT, surgeries, other gender-affirming care) to be freely accessible to all, on an informed consent basis.
Anyone who has Gillick competence must be recognized as able to give medical consent for transition-related healthcare regardless of age, just like any other healthcare.
Medically-correct unbiased trans healthcare information to be included along with any other sex education occurring within a school curriculum.
Protection from discrimination under law, to include the right of equal access to single-sex spaces as appropriate to one's gender, and protection from workplace discrimination, with wilful misgendering categorized explicitly as hate speech.
If you agree, then you are encouraged to reblog and also share this with local trans groups.
You can also use it when talking/writing to journalists, politicians and other policy-influencers/makers.
I would love to see this far and wide.
No need to credit me if sharing elsewhere, just, get the message heard, please!
being online is so scary aren't you guys worried about the world wide spider
It took 36 years for someone to make this joke and by god it was worth the wait
It's Boris, you'll be reet 🕷️
This coming out just days after it was revealed in the Jeffrey Epstein email dump that powerful people manipulated American and British news, political figures and forums to push transphobia to distract from people looking at their child abuse ring.
This includes chief anti-Corbyn-ite in Labour Peter Mandelson, directly feeding anti-trans stories to UK and US newspapers, actively bullshiting "biological studies" that trans people are idk ontologically evil (we have proof of Epstein pitching this exact thing), and creating /pol/ and then feeding anti-trans conspiracy theories for years until it all boiled over.
And over and over we found out each plank of this argument was rotten from the start but people are choosing to keep the bigotry.
New year and getting back to the rhythms of life.

5 of swords in the past
I've been isolating myself and struggling with my thoughts, fighting imaginary battles between them, picking over past betrayal and difficult loops. There is no winner here if I continue... The people in the background are those who are both my friends and those who have hurt me but I can only reconcile if I try to put my own swords aside first - not to forget but to be honest, seek clarity and try the first steps towards healing. I don't have to do this alone.
Seven of Pentacles in the present
Healing takes hard work, commitment and the ability to discern. I get to choose what I want I want to use my energy and time on and work for the outcomes I want in my life. Healing can be a collaborative thing with collective good but I should take the time to sit with my values and needs, I must align myself with the fruits that I want to put forth into the world - I have been doing a lot more work around this already hence the higher number card, still have work to do.
Six of Rods in the future position
A victory, a card of success, the knight of wands is facing towards the future, sure in their position. The other rods presumably held by others convey a sense of bonhomie and alignment with the Knight, from a battle fought together? A sense of community in purpose and direction is once again established and the laurels are a celebration both for the Knight and the People.
The bottom of the deck... Yeah

The thing about character design theory is I really think we shouldn’t just keep reinforcing our “this is what a sneaky and untrustworthy character looks like, this is what a threatening and intimidating character looks like, this is what an innocent character worth protecting looks like, this is what a smart and competent character looks like, this is what a man looks like vs what a woman looks like” conventions like they’re innate human wiring that we tap into scientifically and not like, heavily societal

Oh hey, do you know what time it is? It is highly specific resource time!
Today we have the Royal School of Needlework Stitch Bank! There are HUNDREDS of stitch types in the RSN Stitch Bank.
And more added regularly, let’s look at a recent addition
I picked the first one in the 25 recently added Elizabethan stitches, the Elizabethan French Stitch
The stitch bank provides written and photo tutorials as well as a video option to learn to do it yourself. There are examples of the stitch in use, resources, references, everything but a needle and thread!

rsnstitchbank.org
I looked at some of the tutorials last night and holy shit I'm so impressed! They're SO thorough! Not only do they have written and video instructions, but there are photo and illustration options for each image AND a "flip view" button so that left handed people can see all the images in reverse!
I am going to jump in and add, as you said they are very detailed in their directions, something that takes a lot of time and money.
If anyone who has enjoyed this resource has the means, I encourage you to adopt or sponsor a stitch to help keep this free to access. I know not everyone has the means to (fair, been there) but if you can, check out their sponsor options

Remnants of the British Black Panther’s Lost Legacy
Britain’s black power movement is at risk of being forgotten, say historians
The Cambridge academic Robin Bunce said: “There is a fundamental danger of erasing the very notion of a struggle at all. I’ve been researching this for four and a half years and there have been so many occasions when people have said to me: ‘There was no black struggle in Britain. You’re thinking of South Africa or America.’“
The narrative that feeds it is the one that Britain is the utopia of fair play. We have such a commitment to individual rights, we have such a commitment to common sense and decency that there is no systematic racism in Britain.”…
Bunce said it was not just politicians, but wider British society that would rather not dwell on the less palatable.
