Summer event resistant, sensitive ear friendly stainless steel versions of ancient Roman earring styles.
It's not easy being green, and now you don't have to!
(I love working with bronze. I’m also one of those people who can oxidize silver and copper alloys in seconds of contact, especially if sweat and sunscreen are involved, so with this in mind, to my metal-destroying superpowered fellows, I dedicate this summer collection.)
I got to help dress the grindstones!
I love when romanceable videogame charas have a friendship version of the romance scenes.... i love you can eat cookies with sera in the roof and they are "inquisition cookies" instead of "us cookies"... i love that you can spend the night with gale telling him he doesnt need to sacrifice himself and he is like "fuck you for bringing me friends and adventures now i dont want to die" thats the good stuff... i love that if you don't do the romance you get different convers that add a lot to how the character acts with a good friend, instead of just "oh well you didn't date them so no special bonding for you in friendship either"
Piano tuning day. I know Kohler & Campbell studio uprights aren't considered the best antique pianos, and no, it doesn't hold tune particularly well (a big reason I started tuning it myself), but I love its full sound and all of these little details. I certainly won't be holding up half as well when I'm 100.
In case anyone is keeping track, I did go with A=440 for this round, so it's easier to match up to other instruments.
I had looked at the dates (the earliest being 1927) jotted down on this business card stuck inside my c. 1920s Kohler & Campbell studio upright piano before, over the 30-some years we've had each other, but I hadn't taken a photo of it with flash and caught the bottom note before.
"July 1936, Raised pitch 1/2 tone, A=435 [+? X?] H.B."
I'm about to give my old friend a tuning, and now I'm wondering- do I stick with 440? Should I try 432 or 435 for one of these rounds?
(It would be neat to try. There are also a lot of strings.)
This is 100% me being a crank, but I'm getting real annoyed at seeing Ancient Traditional Crafts™ videos that depict people grinding minerals to make pigments with no respiratory protection. Like, yeah, an N100 mask isn't Authentic and shit, but do you know what powdered mica does to your lungs?
@sawdust-emperor replied:
Watching any green or blue-green mineral being ground to make pigment in these, praying it's just rough glass or some shit and not any of the almost always notably poisonous green minerals:
Being as I've also seen examples where the craftsperson is handling what appears to be raw cinnabar with their bare hands, I wouldn't say the odds are good there.
So I bought my first and likely only Funko Pop! and took him outside for a little photo shoot.
Fen'Harel enansal, y'all.
'Tis the season.
I might be sick of winter. Leafy earring time!
It's mini mattock appreciation week! I pulled my friend here out of my archaeology bag on a lark. It has been the best tool I have tried yet for breaking up the ever-compacting sleet and snow. Pretend it's the rock it longs to be, break it off in manageable chunks, then toss or shovel those chunks away! Pass it on. Save someone from trying to hack at this mess with a shovel. There's even a fair chance handheld mattocks are not sold out in hardware stores right now, since they're not usually considered snow removal tools.
Here are some examples of ancient Roman necklace styles. The faceted garnet and aventurine necklace in the WIP photo is based off of a fragment of a necklace in the Portable Antiquity Scheme database and the amethyst, pearl, and moss agate set is based off of the Carthage Treasure necklace (British Museum AF.323) and Thorvaldsens H1823.
A jewelry company that is just reproductions of historical jewelry found at archeological sites would be so cool.
Gaukler Medieval Wares carries reproductions and artifacts, though his in-stock inventory is small.
Armor and Castings is a Ukrainian company producing a wide range of gorgeous medieval reproductions.
Heart of Oak is a friend and highly skilled artisan selling reproduction glass beads.
Thorthor's Hammer is a very chill dude who makes excellent reproduction jewelry, belt hardware, and clasps from a variety of eras at a really good price.
Elegantly Eccentric makes reproduction jewelry from classical Rome and other cultures of early antiquity.
Also me, if I could ever get my act together.
I second Red's list, and am terribly honored to be included in it!

I am a history major and volunteer archaeologist-in-training, and I've been creating replicas of Mediterranean Middle Bronze Age through late Roman era jewelry, plus costume versions of renaissance through 19th century styles from extant pieces and portraits for about 15 years. Is there interest in posts about this? Either way, please feel free to AMA. Links to my work can be found on my profile, for those who may be curious. :)
