i think that parenting culture in america* puts way too much focus on the concept of making memories, especially for moms. like yeah, it's great to make sure kids have good memories. but "mom spirals into controlling panic while getting angry/despondent that her family is tired/grumpy/arguing when they should be MAKING MEMORIES and everyone STOP BEING WHINY and MAKE MEMORIES" is a scenario that is so common that it's a stereotype, a cliche.
when you're overtired, doing most of the planning, working on a budget, and juggling multiple small humans, maybe the cultural focus should NOT be making memories. it's such a bullshit goal that puts pressure on parents (especially moms) to produce an unrealistic friction-free ideal experience. the desire to "make memories" usually includes "nothing can go wrong or it will Corrupt the Memory." any hiccup is a threat to all a parent's work. any emotional state in a child or partner that isn't Happy Gratitude and Fun is a threat to the Memory Making.
i think instead we should be encouraging parents to not worry about memories. just take a breath and focus on the day that's happening. make the DAY, whatever that is. don't bear the weight of a future that lives in your imagination. handle the hiccups, the emotional states, the fun things with a focus on "what helps us right now, so the next fifteen minutes are better/good?"
i think when we focus on Making Memories we actually make it harder to make good memories. and you can't predict what a kid's brain will remember two decades later! they might remember an exciting outing or they might forget it happened; they might remember the tiny thing a parent did almost every day that the parent didn't even think that much about at the time!
but if a parent is equipped with healthy expectations and can pivot to meet a need in the moment, everyone is more likely to actually have a good time and feel secure, vs the stress of performing happiness to not upset the parent who is insisting everyone Make Memories.
and this isn't a thing parents (again, esp moms) generate internally in a vacuum. this is because society and parenting spaces put SO MUCH PRESSURE on parents to Make Good Memories (yes days, big trips, big parties, etc). and it's hurting everyone.
*america because it's where i am and most of the parenting content i see online and in real life parenting spaces, but i'm sure it exists other places

theres bikes around the city you can rent but you have to use an app that needs your drivers license. theres buses that drive right to your destination, but if you dont have change you need the app. you can wash your car here if you sign into the app. you can go to the bathroom here you just have to unlock it with the app that needs your location on. you can order at this restaurant if you scan the code and download the app. im losing my freaking mind
I'm going to start calling this crap "hostile web design." It's the internet version of hostile architecture. Designed to keep out people who can't or won't pay, results in less accessibility for disabled users.
HOWEVER! There is a solution.

Maybe it's naive of me, but whenever I see portraits like this, with just a father and daughter, it restores my faith in humanity a little. Because people seem to love this idea that fathers never loved their daughters in the past and only saw them as bargaining chips for marriage or whatever, but look at the guy in the first portrait on the left, he loves that little girl! And the dad trying to do his work while his daughter bothers him with an Old Timey Barbie. The man teaching his daughter geography, his expression is so soft! The way the man in the last portrait holds the little girl's hand! And none of these are incidental, these aren't photographs, someone (probably the father) paid good money and sat down for hours so that they could have a painting of themselves and their daughter. Probably because they loved their daughter.
From left to right: 1795 Michał Jerzy Mniszech with his daughter Elżbieta - Marcello Bacciarelli; Christopher Anstey and his daughter Mary Ann by William Hoare 1776; A Musician and His Daughter by Thomas de Keyser 1629; The Geography Lesson (Portrait of Monsieur G. and His Daughter), 1812; Jean-baptiste Isabey And His Daughter; Portrait of a Young Girl and Older Man by William Harrison Scarborough
(this is probably somewhat related to my other favourite genre of painting, Husband With Multiple Kids Making Come Hither Eyes At His Wife)
oh I love those! People being people is one of my favourite kinds of paintings and an important reminder that people in past times were not all that different. There were dads who loved their daughters fiercely. There were fathers who happily looked after their babies too. The German reformer Philip Melanchton for example had a cradle in his office. His wife was busy organising a household for 20 people- she was out and about, he mostly worked in his office, it made sense for him to look after their babies too babies while she dropped by at snack time.
in fact often if it was kind of safe dads had the babies in their workshops for just that reason as we can see in these paintings:
The left is “the busy father” by Theodore Weber, the right one is “At the china repairer’s “ by Wenzel Tornoe. All dads who are actively involved in childcare and a painter who thought it was a cute topic rather than anything ridiculous.
I raise you:
First Lesson by Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865 - 1931)
Un Coup De Main (The Helping Hand) by Émile Renouf (1845 – 1894)
Italian Winegrower And His Daughter by Francesco Baratta (1590-1666)
Don't forget Carl Larsson, who had eight children and painted many portraits of them, but was particularly fond of his daughter Brita.
My favorite part is when the kitty runs to the window and looks out like “the outside stuff????? It is inside?????”

I cannot believe there's absolutely no way to watch free shows and movies anymore, there are too many paid streaming platforms and pirating websites have viruses and ads preventing you from watching it uninterrupted((.)) id rather follow the rules and purchase media moving forward because it is too inconvenient. Seriously, free and no ads or viruses with 1080p streaming is DEAD.
Exactly! It's freaking annoying when I want to watch movies but I would have to subscribe to like 24 different services . Just to watch the shows that I like.
Oh and wouldn’t it be nice for cartoons? Just anything animated. I just wanna stream things without getting conned. Must I be cartoonless forever?
i like using streaming apps but there are waaaay too many and they're all stealing my data .i wish there was a secure and organized way to have millions of shows and movies available one one app. but alas. we've truly gone full circle back to cable + now it spies on you. its a real shame. i dont want to fill my device storage with tons of boring and stupid cash grabs.
These kink posts just keep getting more and more esoteric
