Emily Picks The Oscars 2017

This time last year I was getting ready to go to the Academy Awards. This year I’m in bed sipping coffee still dreaming of the day I will meet Leo... 

If you’re wondering if I will find a way to work Titanic into *every* Oscars blog the answer is YES because DUH and also it’s been 20 years and a more iconic film has yet to be made.

While 2017 still did not give us a more iconic film (though La La Land came VERY close) it was another great, if otherwise depressing, year in the movies. As of this morning, I have seen every film nominated. Yes, even the shorts. YES, even the ANIMATED shorts.

Below are my picks for tonight’s winners, ft. a few upsets for you gamblers plus my unsolicited and entirely unreliable industry commentary.

Emily’s Pick: Jeff Bridges, Hell or High Water

Will Win: Mahershala Ali, Moonlight

Unsolicited industry commentary: Moonlight is a very important and relevant movie, and Mahershala Ali’s performance as Juan was lovely. However, for me, his 5 minutes of screen time was not enough to justify all the buzz, and I was left with a feeling of “That’s it?” Meanwhile, Jeff Bridges quietly dominating role in Hell or High Water has been largely overlooked, in a movie that I think will one day be a classic. Feelings aside, I’m not dumb, and anyone can see Mahershala will nab this one. So what I’m saying is ignore me and don’t go picking anyone else on your ballot.

Sidebar: Sunny Pawar should have been nominated for Lion and not Dev Patel.

ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE

Emily’s Pick: Emma Stone, La La Land

Could Win: Isabelle Huppert, Elle / Natalie Portman, Jackie

Unsolicited industry commentary: I was very torn about this category, as these three performances were all incredible, but so wide-ranging they are difficult to compare against each other. In the end, I gave the edge to Emma, who gave the performance I believe we’ll all remember in 10, 20, 50 years even though “she can’t sing” “she can’t dance” that’s NOT EVEN THE POINT PEOPLE! DON’T LET THE HATERS FOOL YOU!! NOBODY WILL FORGET LA LA LAND!!! *end rant*

Sidebar: OK rant *not over* Meryl Streep?? Are you f*cking kidding me with Meryl Streep??!?! Sure, we all worship at the altar of Queen Streep, but Florence Foster Jenkins was a terrible film by ALL STANDARDS, much less Meryl Streep standards. And at the expense of performances like Annette Bening in 20th Century Women and Amy Adams in Arrival?!?!?! FOR SHAME.

Emily’s Pick: Viggo Mortensen, Captain Fantastic

Should Win: Denzel Washington, Fences

Probably Will Win*: Casey Affleck, Manchester By The Sea

Unsolicited industry commentary: Captain Fantastic was hands down my favorite movie this year (yes, even more than La La Land) and also one of the best I’ve *ever* seen. If you haven’t seen it, stop reading this and go watch it!!! Viggo Mortensen is extraordinary, and I was so glad to see him earn this nomination. It slightly makes up for the fact that Captain Fantastic didn’t get the Best Picture nomination it deserved. However, even though Viggo gave my *favorite* performance by an actor this year, Denzel gave the performance of a lifetime in Fences and should win this award. Casey Affleck was also phenomenal in Manchester, just not Denzel-level phenomenal. But people out here think Denzel doesn’t deserve it because he already got the Tony for the same role in the play, but also people out here are very upset about Casey’s assault problems* (which doesn’t really make him a better/worse actor but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯) and maybe those will cancel each other out and so *throws hands up in air and pencils in Ryan Gosling to win* 

DIRECTING

Emily’s Pick: Damien Chazelle, La La Land

Could Win: Barry Jenkins, Moonlight

Unsolicited industry commentary: I had the pleasure of attending a Q&A with Damien Chazelle, Justin Hurwitz and Ryan Gosling after an early screening of La La Land (brb going to go look at myself in the mirror for several hours and wonder how I became an insufferable Los Angeles cliché...) Hearing them talk about how everything came together in a college dorm, and the years they spent jumping through hoops to actually get it made, and the inspirations and visuals that Damien brought to life so successfully, it’s hard to imagine anyone else deserving this more. Again, Moonlight was groundbreaking in its themes, and a beautiful film, and I’m so glad Barry Jenkins gave us that story. But La La Land is an instant classic, and Damien's ambition will be rewarded.

Unsolicited industry commentary: While I’d love to see 20th Century Women get at least one award, and while The Lobster truly embodied the term “original” here, Kenneth Lonergan is a masterful storyteller and he’ll get this because he deserves it, but also as a consolation prize for no Best Picture/Best Director.

Cinderella pick: Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them

Unsolicited industry commentary: The reproduction of Jackie’s iconic wardrobe - particularly the infamous pink Chanel suit - was extraordinary. But the completely original wardrobe choices for La La Land that straddled somehow both modern and classic Hollywood looks is also impressive. Likewise, to create costumes for the 1920s is one thing. But to create 1920s costumes for a fictional, magical world - like those for Fantastic Beasts - has no precedent.

Emily’s Pick: Hell or High Water

Will Win: La La Land

Could Win: Arrival

Unsolicited industry commentary: If Hell or High Water is gonna get one award tonight it will probably be for editing. The way the two sides of the story in the movie run parallel and converge at the end was, in my opinion, brilliant. The editing of Arrival was also critical to the unfolding of the film’s narrative. However, La La Land seems to be the frontrunner for...all of the awards. So.

Unsolicited industry commentary: Seriously, there was no more iconic look in 2016 than Harley Quinn and IMO that deserves an award. But I’m sure it will go to Star Trek because aliens -_-

Ryan Gosling being wistful and romantic.

Emily’s Pick: Hacksaw Ridge

Unsolicited industry commentary: I learned recently what these categories actually mean — and no, just because La La Land is a musical doesn’t mean it will win them. Here is a great explainer in case you’re confused. I selected Hacksaw Ridge because its soundscape of war and battle and trying to be quiet in holes overnight in a trench surrounded by the enemy filled me with a sense of complete and utter nauseating visceral horror and I’m still not okay.

Emily Picks: The Oscars

2014 has been an unpredictable year for movies, to say the least. Wes Anderson's Grand Budapest Hotel has rallied in awards season despite an early March release (and despite the fact that the Academy is generally not an Anderson fan); almost half of the Best Acting nods went to first-time nominees (including Michael Keaton and Patricia Arquette, which is baffling); an unprecedented number of Best Picture films were produced independently; and the general consensus seems to be that almost nobody has seen any of these movies. Womp.

While there were little surprises and relatively few "snubs" among this year's Oscar nominees (the major exception being The Lego Movie — seriously, wtf??), the battle for major categories is far less clear-cut than it has been in recent years. I'm still legitimately nauseous over whether to pick Birdman or Boyhood for Best Picture, so that should give you an idea of where I'm at with this year's Oscars.

However, unlike the majority of America, I have powered through all but 7 of the nominated films this year — excluding documentaries, animations and foreign films — so read on for my proven reliable and award-winning* picks and predictions.

*winner 2013 Sundance Cinemas Oscars contest (perhaps my greatest achievement in life, to date. I also include this on my resumé.)

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR/ACTRESS

I mean, everyone already knows whose winning these (because they've won literally every award this season that they could possibly be given), so I wouldn't be surprised if the other nominees don't even show up. I'm bummed for the likes of Emma Stone and Edward Norton, who would otherwise be major contenders, but nothing makes me happier than seeing Meryl Streep go down in flames, so I have no complaints.

Emily's Pick: J.K. Simmons, Whiplash and Patricia Arquette, Boyhood

Could win: Sorry, not happening.

BEST DIRECTOR

For many years, Best Director and Best Picture went hand-in-hand; you couldn't win one without the other. In recent years, however, the Academy has shifted to splitting these awards as a way of honoring more films in highly contested years: i.e. 2014 Director went to Alfonso Cuarón for Gravity and Best Picture to 12 Years A Slave; 2013 Director to Ang Lee for Life of Pi and Best Picture to Argo (read: we feel bad for not even nominating Ben Affleck for Director).

Prior to recent memory, the last time these awards were split was back in 2006. So, with this year's battle between Birdman and Boyhood, the question is: will the Academy go back to pairing Director with Picture, or continue the trend of spreading the love? However you answer that will decide how you vote on this one (and Best Picture, for that matter).

For me, the clear winner here is Linklater. Someone said that being able to keep a film together on set for 3 months is a big enough task, so being able to keep a film organized for 12 years, well, that deserves some major kudos.

Emily's Pick: Richard Linklater, Boyhood

Could Win: Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Birdman

BEST ACTRESS

As complicated as the choice is for Best Actor, the choice for Best Actress is equally clear cut: it's Julianne Moore, for Still Alice, hands down.

That's not to say there weren't great performances from our other leading ladies this year. I personally found Rosamund Pike to be a treasure bringing the dangerously psychotic disappearing act of "Amazing Amy" to life in Gone Girl. Felicity Jones, as well, was a force on screen opposite Eddie Redmayne in Theory of Everything, every bit as persistent as she was charming. Enough to convince me that Theory was really Jane Hawking's story, more so than Stephen's. Bravo to both.

The others were less impressive to me. I thought Reese Witherspoon was a bore in Wild, and was completely outshone by supporting actress nominee Laura Dern. In the French Two Days, One Night, Marion Cotillard gave a very nuanced performance as a wife and mother fighting the loss of her job while struggling through severe depression. Still, I found it impossible to empathize with her character, who I more often perceived as whiny, selfish and ungrateful than the resilient fighter she could have been.

But Julianne Moore's turn as a college professor and mother facing the debilitating struggle of early-onset Alzheimer's was truly unforgettable. Her performance moved me to tears — not an easy feat! — and stayed with me for days. This award is hers.

Emily's Pick: Julianne Moore, Still Alice

Could Win: Felicity Jones, The Theory of Everything

BEST ACTOR

I could talk as much about the performances that WEREN'T nominated for this award as I could about the five lucky guys who nabbed the top spots. Seriously, we could rotate in Jake Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler or David Oyelowo for Selma or Ralph Fiennes for The Grand Budapest Hotel or Tom Hardy in Locke and have a completely different set of actors here and all would be completely deserving. Simply put, it was a GREAT year to be an actor (until you're competing, then it probably kind of sucks. Sorry guys.)

Still, like Best Picture, two men have become standouts on the awards circuit: Eddie Redmayne for The Theory of Everything and Michael Keaton for Birdman.

Redmayne is the easy pick here, transforming physically and emotionally into celebrated physicist Stephen Hawking in a moving biopic and love story — the exact kind of performance the Academy loves to love. And he WAS fantastic. But I have to say, Theory was all just a bit too cliché for me — Redmayne's performance included. He is young and talented and has an eye for great roles, so this certainly won't be his last shot at this trophy... I just don't see it happening this year.

Keaton is this year's comeback kid, both literally and on screen. He has never before been nominated for an Academy Award (say what?!) and he stole the show in Birdman among a standout ensemble cast. Really, nobody I know who has seen the movie has been able to stop talking about his performance as a has-been blockbuster actor trying to revitalize his career on the stage. Actors make up 20 percent of the Academy's voting block — the largest percentage by far — and it's likely this performance resonated with them more than any other. Plus, Keaton has paid his dues.

Emily's Pick: Michael Keaton, Birdman

Could win: Eddie Redmayne, The Theory of Everything

There is a chance - should Birdman nab Best Picture - the Academy will give this one to Redmayne as a way to further spread the love. Keep that in mind.

BEST PICTURE

Gahhhhhhhhhh is maybe the best way to describe my feelings about this pick. The race has definitively boiled down to two films: Birdman and Boyhood. If you ask me tonight, I probably will have changed my mind. Hell, ask me in 5 minutes and I probably have already changed my mind. Excuse me while I go take another Xanax and lie down, I'm having an anxiety attack...

There's no doubt about it that Birdman was easily my favorite film this year. By a mile and a half. Full of energetic performances and moving at a frenetic pace accented by the fact that it was shot to look like one continuous take (incredible, btw), I left with this exhilarating feeling that reminded me why I love movies, and I texted my brother telling him to go see it before I had even left my seat. And I didn't really want to even leave my seat — I would have stayed there for every showing for the rest of the day. Simply, phenomenal. But is it phenomenal *enough* to overcome the force that is Boyhood?

Though it's certainly a slower pace, there's no denying Boyhood is an unprecedented achievement in filmmaking. Filmed in bits and pieces over 12 years, Boyhood perfectly and genuinely captured the reality of growing up for every '90s kid — so much so that I felt I had relived my entire childhood in less than 3 hours. Even putting the buzz of the 12-year gimmick aside, the story was compelling enough to stand on its own. It's undoubtedly one of the most captivating movies of the year, if not of all time.

Among the other nominees, you have moving historical biopics in The Theory of Everything, Selma and The Imitation Game. While I enjoyed all three movies, I didn't feel any had enough substance or emotional punch to take home the big prize. (Though I will admit I sobbed like a child through *all* of Selma. The whole thing. It was embarrassing.)

Then there are the indie darlings, Whiplash and The Grand Budapest Hotel. Whiplash was a thrill ride and one helluva story, relying on two outstanding performances from Miles Teller and JK Simmons, but ultimately it's not the type of film the Academy goes for. Hotel was not my favorite Wes Anderson film ever, but it is about as Wes Anderson-y as a Wes Anderson film can get in all the best ways possible, so it's no surprise that he's finally getting the recognition he so deserves with this film. It also happens to be tied with Birdman for the MOST nominated film this year with nine. I think it will sweep up in the design categories, but like Whiplash, is a little too out there for Best Picture fare.

That leaves Clint Eastwood's controversial American Sniper. For me, this was the only other film this year that felt like a Best Picture winner. The subject matter is timely, Cooper's portrayal is perhaps the best of his career, and it hits hard on the emotional front. Not to mention Eastwood was snubbed in the directing field, so the Academy could award Best Picture as a consolation prize. However, I think the political divisiveness may have alienated some voters, leaving Birdman or Boyhood to take the Oscar.

I was so bent out of shape about this choice that I made my mom — who really has no particular interest in film or awards season whatsoever — watch both Birdman and Boyhood and give me her take:

Mom says: "Birdman was a strange movie, great ensemble cast. Too weird to win. Boyhood more likely for Best Picture. Even though I thought it was just OK entertainment-wise, it was a groundbreaking cinematic event that no one will likely ever attempt again. I personally most enjoyed Theory Of Everything as a movie, but it won't win. However, Eddie Redmayne will give Michael Keaton a run for his money." Thanks, Mom.

Could win: Who the hell knows, I'm probably making a huge mistake (retreats back to cave of anxiety)

ANIMATED FEATURE FILM

To be fair, as of this writing, I've only seen one of these films. And really, The Lego Movie should have been nominated and would have been the clear winner here, but by some ugly twist of fate that did not happen. SO it really could be anybody's game. While I'd like to say the Academy will give it to either of the two more inventive projects Song of the Sea or The Tale of Princess Kayuga, it seems the general consensus is leaning toward the dragon sequel. Fine by me — I saw it, I love it, I want a dragon, it was great.

There was not a single movie this year that was a waste of my time and life more than Maleficent. If it had not been my friend's pick, you could never have paid me to go see that movie, and I will never see it again. BUT Angelina Jolie did look pretty fierce in that Disney dominatrix horned get-up. 

Still, not good enough to top the whimsical looks of Hotel. (Also, Maleficent should never be allowed to say it is an Academy Award-winning film. EVER. Full stop.)

I started watching Ida on Netflix and just felt blah about it. That's the only one of these I had the time to attempt, unfortunately, but I am very excited about Italy's Wild Tales which just debuted in theaters on Friday. In the meantime, I'm going to go against the majority and pick Russia's Leviathan, which some have said is the best film of the year overall.

ORIGINAL SCORE

Johannsson has been sweeping up for his mysterious and whimsical score on Theory and I think his streak will continue tonight. Sorry, Desplat; always the bridesmaid, and never the bride.

Could Win: Alexandre Desplat, for either The Imitation Game or The Grand Budapest Hotel — you choose.

ORIGINAL SONG

Goddammit if "Glory" doesn't give me the goosebumps and make me cry like a child every. single. time. so I would be remiss if I didn't give this one to Mr. Legend (also because I selfishly want more Chrissy Teigen cry face) but honestly it's a toss up.

Could Win: Truthfully, I should say "I'm Not Gonna Miss You" for GLEN CAMPBELL...I'LL BE ME. But perhaps to excuse their complete and total assfuckery of a snub, the Academy will give it to THE LEGO MOVIE for "Everything Is Awesome." A girl can dream.

For creating a world as Wes Anderson-y as it can possibly get, this one clearly belongs to Hotel.

SHORT FILM - ANIMATED

This was the first year ever that I made the time to see the animated shorts, and I was so glad that I did. With a total runtime of about 45 minutes, it was completely worth it and I highly recommend it to everyone in the future. So much creativity going on in such a short amount of time, and from a widely diverse pool of nations, I actually had a really hard time deciding on my picks — so much so that I watched some of these twice!

Eventually I landed in agreement with the critical favorite, The Dam Keeper, a lovely and touching short about a lonely young pig in charge of the town's dam who is bullied by his classmates (produced by PIXAR alums.) Though I wouldn't be surprised if the Academy awards the Disney-produced Feast which was completely precious and left me grinning from ear to ear (and hungry).

SHORT FILM - LIVE ACTION

I also took the time to watch this group of films, which were nowhere near as short and sweet as their animated counterparts, but great stories nonetheless. 

Among these were three standounts: the melancholy Parvaneh about an isolated, young Afghani teen in Germany and her night on the town with a rebellious local girl; The Phone Call, a harrowing depiction of the desperate conversation between a crisis line operator and a suicidal elderly man on the line; and the upbeat and comical Boogaloo and Graham, the witty tale of two young Irish brothers and their pet chickens.

While I was very drawn by the emotion of The Phone Call, it is ultimately Parvaneh that stuck with me. Even more impressive is that this was a student film.

Almost always this goes to war movies. So notch one for American Sniper.

SOUND MIXING

To be honest the only reason I know what this means is because of the Taylor Swift exhibit at the GRAMMY museum where you can play with the mixing board and adjust the sound mix on Taylor tracks.

In terms of the Oscars, though, this usually goes along with Sound Editing (and also usually to war movies). However, they were doing some intense music things in Whiplash that will warrant splitting up these trophies.

Could Win: American Sniper

VISUAL EFFECTS

I effectively know zero about what goes into creating special effects on a movie, and I didn't bother seeing half of these because, well, sci-fi fantasy animal superhero summer action flicks just aren't really my cup of tea, and I don't have the patience to sit through 3+ hours of Anne Hathaway in Interstellar. The exceptions to this were X-Men (WOLVERINE4LYFE) and Guardians of the Galaxy, because Chris Pratt, duh. Both were kickass.

However, I'm going to lean toward the Apes movie, because that's won the most visual awards this season so far. And I trust that more than my love for Chris Pratt and Hugh Jackman. I am Groot.

Could Win: Interstellar

WRITING - ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

So far this is The Imitation Game's to lose — but word on the street is that Whiplash may get the nod because in truth it was an original screenplay and the Academy will want to make up for the flub. I'm going to go with that, mostly because I thought The Imitation Game was wildly overrated and I hope Harvey Weinstein goes home empty-handed.

Because Whiplash isn't in on this, that leaves the door wide open for more wins for Wes Anderson and the thoroughly original Hotel. Birdman is also a strong possibility, with it's breakneck pace and continuous shot-mentality. Though, I'd love to see this go to Nightcrawler, which I thought deserved way more than it got this year.
