I used to be someone who used ‘fighter’ language regarding chronic illness- being a ‘warrior’ ’battling my illnesses’ etc etc. The thing is,

a Twitter thread from @teawithhb from August 11th, 2024 she writes the following: I used to be someone who uses "fighter" language regarding chronic illnesses - being a 'warrior', 'battling my illnesses' etc etc. The thing is, it hurt me . Being at war with my body made me feel shame and it was not healthy.

I urge anyone who uses this language to look into internalized ableism and ask why illness is framed as a 'win/lose' when many of us have to live with it every day. Part of reducing ableism is understanding that disability is a natural part of life - not anyone's fault! (Thread and needle emoji) @teawithhb adds to her post: Saying it is a battle implies we have some control over it or even that we chose it! So- what does it say to the people who have 'lost' their battle? To their families? That they weren't strong enough? They didn't fight hard enough? Screw that.

Rest is true strength. NOT pushing through symptoms in an effort to convince people you're 'winning' today. I think this language is so damaging and would be keen to hear why it is so common within these communities (Heart emoji) [end of picture]
