MAGA masculinity on full display.
Conservatives, especially libertarians, can't compete intellectually. The men are legit dense.
Trump is dim. Speaker Mike Johnson is a joke. JD Vance went to Yale and now acts like a righteous moron. Trump's Cabinet? SCOTUS? GOP Congress? Christian Academies? CPAC?
We are living through some dumb times
I'm going to *remembers how many times in my life I didn't tell anyone I was suicidal* you know, I'm not going to, but I honestly think even joking about it is better than never talking about it, and I think people who have dealt with such a difficult thing deserve to be able to joke about our own experiences without getting lectured about some knock-off CBT that's been ground up and shat out of the online pop psychology void, and also you know this format in itself is a suicide joke right it's just euphemistic
Getting really tired of how all the anti porn censorship posts going around are like, "I don't like porn but I will defend it" or "it was bad for me to see porn young but it's better than the alternative." I like porn. I want to see porn. I was not damaged by seeing porn as a young person. Porn and erotica are valid and fun vehicles for artistic expression and completely normal expressions of human sexuality. We gain nothing by being squeamish in our support of porn, erotica, and nsfw content.
#it was good for me to see erotica at the age I sought it out (definitely younger than 18 Imao) because it was #an extremely safe and low-stakes way to explore the concept of sexuality and what I was and wasn't into #and because I enjoyed it! #some of it l've seen I haven't been into and even found unpleasant but it's baffling to call that harm #any more than smelling something really nasty while out walking has caused me harm. #sometimes things take you by surprise and make you go 'ew bleh' but that is literally. How life is. Like trash in an alley. #And there is quite a lot of cool and enjoyable and joyful stuff also! Like good restaurant smells! #it's just life it's just a part of life. (via @screambirdscreaming)
#prev is highly correct #i recognize that this is a talking point from some very wretched sources. but: the loss of distinction between harm and discomfort #is frankly devastating a lot of people's ability to socially cohere #and needs to be remedied!!!! urgently!!!!!! (via @ursula-legun)
Seconded in all respects. I think I'm brave enough to go fully on the record about my perspective on this at this point.
Much of - probably a majority of - the "harm" we attribute to "porn exposure" is actually a consequence of the cultural and moral segregation and fetishization of erotic content as taboo. While concerns about decontextualized depictions of fantasy fetish content and stereotyping are probably valid in many respects, the solution to this is education rather than counterproductive prohibition, and even were that not the case; these harms are almost certainly massively outweighed by the impact of trying to enforce that prohibition.
Much as the child with the bruised knee often only starts themselves crying when their parents begin to fuss, we are making "exposure to erotic content" a learned trauma for younger generations in an entirely arbitrary manner, and the framing of media that is almost definitionally designed to be appealing and fascinating to a sexually maturing brain as intrinsically evil, dirty and wrong is almost certainly fucking us all up psychologically in deep, horrific ways that we're probably too deeply immersed in to fully understand and contemplate. We do not need to feel this way about sex. Nobody needs to be scared of it. These are attitudes that were taught to us, one way or another.
(And, in cases where people have received more direct sexual trauma, a slackening of taboo and shame would make such instances far more easy to report, identify and prevent, and easier to subsequently psychologically process!).
It has been pointed out that in western culture we much more readily expose young people to lurid, graphic content in the form of depictions of violence and gore. If anything that should have more potential to be intrinsically upsetting and traumatizing, given that despite what some conservative minds seem to believe, murder is in fact a worse thing to happen to a person than sex. And yet we hand wring on behalf of our teenagers a hell of a lot less, and to be frank I feel like they're a hell of a lot better off for it. Perhaps the way we currently treat non-sexual graphic media paints a picture of what the world might look like if we stopped making such a big deal out of sexual content specifically, and when you think about it that way it's almost immediately clear how unimaginably more healthy we'd all be without the societal neurosis.

artists fuck better because we turn sex into art, masterpieces, mattresses become canvases where we can paint our love to someone with bodies.

i was training a young person at work, and she referred to sexual assault as "SA" out loud, and i immediately was like, "no, it's sexual assault, call it what it is," bc idgaf if the algorithm overlords have taught y'all that you should fear direct language, how tf do any of you expect to ever address real issues with any amount of seriousness if you can't even say the words? imagine an advocate looking a sexual assault survivor in the eyes and asking "did he grape you?" it's absolutely fucking absurd, but these young interns and new hires are coming into an environment where we deal with survivors of all different kinds of abuse, and they're coming with the mindset that the words are as bad as the actions, and that makes them shitty at the job and look juvenile af
i HATE self-censorship for a lot of reasons, but being in crisis work makes it even more frustrating. who are you censoring for? like i am being so fr, WHO are you censoring for? have you even thought it through? people who have been raped know that they have been raped. if someone attempts suicide or is grieving someone who did, saying "sewer slide" isn't going to protect them from any of the feelings. a murder victim's family isn't going to feel better bc you said "unalived" instead of murdered. if anything, it's just extremely invalidating and othering. it's saying "what happened to you is so bad that i won't even say the word," which is NOT trauma-informed care. you are not protecting survivors/victims when you self-censor. the ONLY things you protect when you self-censor are the puritanical ideologies that are being encouraged by rich fascists who want your money and obedience
say the fucking words, guys. just say the goddamn words before i go insane!!!
Next up someone is going to claim that the Narnia series isn't kids books.
Kids books is probably not the best way to word it, you can enjoy them at every age, including your childhood, as you get older you may find new truths in them, but they're still good for any age.

“so you like criminals?” I LIKE THE RIGHT TO A FAIR TRIAL.
One of worst things copaganda ever perpetuated is the rhetoric that if you aren't guilty of breaking the law, you shouldn't value your personal privacy against the state's surveillance and interrogation. That only guilty people hire lawyers when talking to police.
if you want to experience life more deeply you have to find more beauty. stop training yourself to dismiss, to mock, to assume the worst all the time — when you do this you build walls between yourself and the world. and after a while you stop feeling the warmth of it entirely.
beauty requires openness. it asks you to let things reach you, to soften enough to be moved. it’s not naive to see beauty everywhere—it’s a skill, a form of intelligence, a kind of quiet bravery. because it is so much easier to critique than to create, to detach than to engage, to dismiss than to love.
let yourself be affected. let yourself find things beautiful and let that be enough. life is not asking you to be cool, sitting on the sidelines and nitpicking everything. it’s asking you to see life and experience it fully.
"Racialised" is much better than PoC but I've been leaning a lot on the concept of racial markedness. Because that allows us to make statements like "the name Jamal is racially marked in USA". Rather than saying something like "Jamal is a PoC name", a nonsense statement, saying it's racially marked in USA allows us to contrast with societies like Albania or the Arab countries where the name Jamal is ordinary, thus unmarked.
It's a concept I've kind of imported from linguistic analysis; saying a speech pattern is more or less marked does not really allow us to avoid the subject of who's doing the marking. A statement like "womens' speech is more marked in Lakota" necessitates that we understand that it's the Lakota who are marking womens' speech. A foreigner can't tell the difference and probably doesn't understand why it would thus be weird to see a man using speech patterns associated with women, in the same way an Albanian wouldn't understand why USA people would think Jamal is a Black name.
You! You get it. In my view, if someone is saying "racialised" or "racially marked" without acknowledgement of context, they are doing it in a way that is gramatically incorrect.

Wondering why grocery prices are so high? One reason is that minimal competition means maximized price gouging. And now some of the biggest egg producers in the country are getting a mere slap on the wrist after years of ripping us off.
None of them admitted wrongdoing.
