YOU
YOU HATE AI !!
A bus may have only a couple of passengers, especially at the beginning or end of its route. But let's also take fuel efficiency into account.
If there's one person on a bus because that person cannot or doesn't want to drive, the bus is succeeding.
I read a study once on the fuel efficiency of various types of commuter vehicles (car, bus, train) on a per person basis and the number of people needed riding public transit to match the "efficiency" of cars is shockingly low. A bus needs to carry like 3-4 people to be fuel efficient, and trains require 2-3 per train car. Both often carry two dozen or more during peak hours, more than justifying any perceived requirements for efficiency for the train or bus to provide service the entire day.
Yeah, this is an expectations fallacy. "If the bus CAN seat 40, and DOESN'T seat 40, the bus is failing," say the people who drive their five-to-eight-seater SUVs all over with just themselves in the vehicle, as if there could be no other reason to fill a bus with 40 seats than the need for 40 fares to break even.
Those extra seats don't cost very much at all over time and offer surge capacity, use flexibility (can drive the same bus on a heavily populated route and a light one at different times) and a decent amount of space and comfort for when there's not very many riders and you're not jammed cheek-by-ass with a bunch of strangers.
Gemini had the fucking GALL to get in my email and summarize a 3-line email, taking up more space than the email did visually.
Hit the “thumbs down.” It’s like, what’s wrong??? Was our summary wrong? Were there offensive words? Thank you for helping us improve our AI tools :)
I selected “other.”
Text box popped up. Please elaborate!
Wrote in “I can fucking read” submit comment
Then had to spend several minutes torching all my settings with a flamethrower. Let me be clear: I’m (a lawyer) notoriously picky with my words FOR GOOD REASON (lawyering) so I overwhelmingly reject Gmail’s “helpful” little assistance. My privacy settings were set to “full paranoia” a little less than a year ago when I saw the writing on the wall and knew public defenders could become a target in the future. Better to lock it all down now.
Gemini had crept in there and turned ALL that shit back on. And showed itself by saying “Jane Doe says she’s so sorry for your loss and offers to reschedule for Thursday at 3” over an email from Jane Doe saying “I’m so sorry for your loss. We could reschedule for Thursday at 3?”
Why would I possibly need this. In what universe would I need this. I have eyes and a brain and a reading speed that twenty years ago was measured at 1500 wpm with full comprehension on dense scientific text. Furthermore! If I read a summary, I’m not reading what they actually wrote. If I’m not reading what they actually wrote, I’m not using my own judgment on the words and phrases that they used.
I literally don’t understand why this is helpful at all. This is just avoidance. Using LLMs to write is specifically Not Writing. Using LLMs to summarize is Not Reading. Using them to make art is Avoiding Making Art. Just READ! Just WRITE! I was not put on this fucking planet to not read and not write and not make art! Avoidance is an anxiety symptom and indulging it gives it more power.
If I had an AI to do my most dreaded task, answer the phone for clients, I wouldn’t use it. Because an AI cannot help them. An AI cannot hear the facts of their case, make appropriate noises, be thoughtful and insightful, and then give them a realistic estimate of what could happen in court. I am unique. I cannot be replaced by machine learning. I have style. I have expertise. I don’t hallucinate unless I’m having a really great Friday night and I’m off the clock.
When I need to outsource tasks from my own brain, I give them to people I know can do them and that I trust to do them right.
Fuck, it just sneaks up on you, doesn’t it?? Goddamn Gemini jumpscare right in my own fucking email
I WAS NOT PUT ON THIS FUCKING PLANET TO NOT READ AND NOT WRITE AND NOT MAKE ART!
Us, arriving to Austria to a tiny family hotel owned by an elderly lady
Us: speak only limited German
Lady: barely speaks English
Us:
Lady:
Lady: Czech? Slovak?
Us: Czech
Lady, to herself: Czech, that's a Slavic language right
Lady: understand Yugoslavian?
Us:
Us: yeah that works
Shit like this can really only happen in Europe. Reminds me of the time I took my best shot at ordering at a restaurant in Spain in spanish. The closest language to spanish that I actually speak is latin.
Waiter: Germany?
Me: No, Czechia.
Waiter, in a heavily accented but intelligible Czech: Why didn’t you say so before! We get you guys here all the time!
Já v roce 2019 na Ukrajině: OK, takže když použiju tohle staročeský slovo, přidám polský sloveso, své chabé znalosti záhoráčtiny a řeknu to s ruskym přízvukem, tak to projde.
[Me in 2019 in Ukraine: ok so if i use this Old Czech word, add a Polish verb, my poor knowledge of the Záhorie dialect of Slovak and say it with a Russian accent, it might pass]
Reminds me of the time when we were in Poland and I tried to order a burger using a truly unholy mix of Slovak, Russian and Ostrava dialect (which in itself is like an unholy mix of Czech and Polish).
I did get the burger
[#my grandpa called this "Slavic Esperanto"]
I know Ukrainians who can do this on purpose and masterfully, and it was mind-blowing to hear a speech as immediately understandable to an audience of native speakers of three different native Slavic languages, not just two languages as is common
During one student exchange I (a Pole) got acquainted with two students from Czechia and Russia. At first we talked in English or German, but after a while we’ve noticed, that we could understand each other’s native languages just fine. And if some word was unknown in one language, another one had the right synonym.
*Each of us talking in their mother tongue*
Me: Bla bla bla.
Russian: I don’t know this “bla”.
Czech: Oh, we have “bla”! We also call it “that”!
Russian: Oh I know “that”! It’s a very old version of “this”.
Me: Oh, we have “this” too, but it means something slightly different.
German acquaintance: Was für nen Scheiß zieht ihr da ab? o_O
the reason there aren't slavic people in the bible is that they wouldn't have been surprised or awed to hear the disciples speak in tongues and be understood by people of many nations at once
Slavs walked away from the Tower of Babel mildly inconvenienced.
As a non-native speaker of Czech who is only conversationally proficient and has terrible grammar, let me tell you, no one was more surprised than I was to discover that I can understand Slovak just fine. And when the two moving guys finished hauling my furniture to my new apartment and we were chatting a bit before they left, I discovered that the reason I'd had a little trouble understanding one of their "accents" was because he was speaking Ukrainian the whole time.
"Slavs walked away from the Tower of Babel mildly inconvenienced." killed me
It really might happen this year. I have a feeling.
Look I hope everybody has lesbian sex and gets their license and moves out and whatever but this post is about one thing only and you guys are diluting its power. No offense I hope that all happens but this post needs to be aimed at one point and it can't move.
$20 to rent a movie online for 48 hours i need yall to get so real right now bc that is insane. “that’s the average cost” which is a problem!! if im paying $20 i better get the film on dvd to have and watch forever
and before i get the “what about seeing ig at the movie theater” comments
i dont have a 60 foot screen and high tech surround sound audio and fancy seats at home. i will pay $20 to watch a movie once with friends for the experience in the theater. i will absolutely not pay $20 to watch a movie on my laptop lmfao
£15/$20 is the price of a fucking DVD. That you keep. I'm not paying that much to rent fuck all, you must be joking.
Are all of you really too young to remember how it used to be before corporations stopped selling you things that became yours in perpetuity after you paid for them and started charging you rent for everything?
Not to mention that unless you rip your own digital files (and sometimes even if you do), some corporation can and will delete your media on a whim. Guess how I found that out?

Academy Award Winners for Best Cinematography: 2004 — Russell Boyd, ACS, ASC Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) Directed by Peter Weir Aspect Ratio: 2.39 : 1
“Master and Commander — gee, that was a hard film to make. There is no easy film, of course, but Master was very demanding physically — because of the water, even though a lot of it was shot in the tank in Mexico that had been built for Titanic. Peter Weir once said to me — and I’ll never forget it — he said, ‘Come on and do a film of mine, and I’ll take you on an adventure.’ And he does!” — Russell Boyd for The American Society of Cinematographers, February 2018

Happy third anniversary, Elden Ring! And here is the illustration I created to commemorate that! I actually just finished the base game, and I have plenty of ideas I would like to explore for future illustrations, but I hope you will like this one!
Multi billion dollar corporations: We make crap AI ads because we rather hang themselves than pay an extra cent for a quality work.
Midsize art supply manufacturer: We commissioned a watercolor artist to make an illustration for every color of our watercolor palette and make it into an art book with swatches.

Jesus fucking christ.
Now this is the kind of thing I am here for. I'm generally not a fan of "people being good at things on the internet", mostly when it's presented in that tiktok/asmr/perfectionism style.
But this? This is someone showing you their craft in a normal way where you can clearly see they're an expert. The book binding is fascinating to see and the watercolours are mind-blowing! Absolutely stunning work 🤩! I'd love to leaf through that book...
i genuinely believe that schools need to immediately expel students for using gen AI & blacklist them from any other program for at least five years, because i don’t want to fucking deal with these useless twerps being credentialed in any field whatsoever. these fucking people are going to be your lawyers. your healthcare professionals. these people who are too fucking dumb to read, who would rather blindly trust a glorified predictive text generator than spend five minutes studying or thinking on their own.
at this point, if you didn’t receive your credentials before 2020, it is infinitely safer for me to assume that your degree is hollow, your work is fake, and your knowledge nonexistent unless & until proven otherwise.
we are genuinely not mean enough about this.
there’s always someone getting huffy because THEIR braindead shortcut is justified, or shamelessly abusing the entire concept of disability accommodation to argue that substituting chatgpt for all independent thought & intellectual labor is a win for “accessibility.” we need to start shunning these people and bullying them out of public life, especially if they hold any position of responsibility.
#i asked a med student to look something up #(a time-honored method of clinical teaching) #and he typed it into chat gpt and turned his phone around to show me the answer
christ almighty. these people are going to be responsible for life or death decisions.
and they don’t have any fucking brains, because they have signed over all intellectual effort to chat gpt, so your life is in the hands of someone who can’t even be fucked to look up information from a verifiable source.
