I feel like zombie settings could do more to make slow zombies scarier in quiet, creeping ways. Zombies facing away from people. Walking backwards. Only moving if they're not seen. Holding a survivor but not hurting them. Motionless but their eyes follow you. Soundless horde.
Encountering fast zombies: Physical challenge
Encountering slow zombies: Psychological terror
Ohh okay okay okay I like this.
If zombies are a representation of the breakdown of society, the traditional zombie is a more noticeable, violent, immediate collapse of society.
The slow, quiet, still zombie is more about the societal collapse we don't see until it's too late, one that doesn't happen suddenly and drastically but one that happens without a fuss. The violence doesn't become the focus of the tension, the violence is the release of it.
Layering my Short Skirt, Long Jacket (CAKE) over my White Tee (CORPSE) and Blue Jeans (Lana Del Ray) Knee Socks (Arctic Monkeys) and Blue Suede Shoes (Elvis) and then putting on my Raspberry Beret (Prince) before I head out to the Bard Olympics where I am disqualified for performance-enhancing power buffs. On my way home I am cast as a sassy but cute side character in an early 2010's Disney Channel original series. I look fresh as hell
IM SO UPSET
what if memories can endure different lifetimes? (a "what if" abt Zombie Island that i've always wanted to draw) happy pride! :)
Moon June
Day 2: Nocturne - @monthlywritingchallenges
For Moon June, Iām going to be writing excerpts from a current project of mine, The Language of Wolves. These are all out-of-order and -out-of-context; Theyāre mostly just to get my creative juices flowing. Keep in mind that theyāre also unedited.
Niv continued to duck her head long after she had slipped out of the tent, keeping her gaze fixed on the ground. She wasnāt trying to hide; Everybody in the village knew whose lodgings were whose. But it felt as if even the sky would judge her.
She made to lift the hood of her cloak, but her hands brushed against her hair. She hissed, then cursed herself for the noise. Ever since the incident, she had forgone the uniform. She didnāt deserve to wear it. She wasnāt her grandmother. And she was starting to realize that that wasnāt anything to be proud of.
Her feet tapped lightly on the cobblestones, beating a hesitant, deferential path. The village was starting to come back to itself. Vendors sat at their markets in the town square, waiting patiently, more cognizant than they might have been that there were worse things than spoiled goods. Children ran around in aimless circles. A man sat at the base of a tree with his lute, strumming out a soft, mournful nocturne. She slowed down. He paused in his music just long enough to spit at her.
I have got to stop writing these so late in the day š

Oh, to feign autumn - I build a hedge grand beneath - it is not Hiding - not Blindness, no - I pack myself with dirt, sweet sighs - I hear far-off the fairy-hum - I have done my dying right -Ā

Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as āproblematicā in class and our professor was like, āThatās cool, but āproblematicā doesnāt really mean anything. It means that the thing youāre describing has a problem, and in and of itself thatās not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else itās not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like youāre trying to say that this is bad, but you donāt want to say ābad.ā Is that right?ā
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the ābadā thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, āIām uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.ā
Once we stopped calling things āproblematicā and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, āthatās racistā or āthatās misogynisticā or āew capitalism grossā out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, āUhhh... Iām not sure whatās so bad?ā and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I canāt help but think of this professor being like, āGood starting point, now letās get specific.ā I think when we have to commit to saying āthatās ___ā it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever weāre claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes itās art, and it should be full of problems, because thatās what art is.
