Modern AU: Instead of getting peeled open like a can of tuna, Eragon instead breaks his back in a freak accident. Fall gone wrong or incompatibility with a speeding vehicle maybe. So, he spends months kind of rotting away in a hospital with only his friends for company.

Saphira visits almost every day with her usual sassy, upbeat attitude to bring some sun in the room. Thorn is usually with her, sometimes sneaking in a sweet treat for morale.

Roran calls as often as possible, but he's too far away to visit regularly and having a kiddo makes it all the worse.

Murtagh is there every day, bright and early, before work. Then he comes back after until visitation hours end. He knows all too well the frustration and pain of a back injury, and would do anything to lessen that for his little brother.

Got any ideas for when Eragon begins physical therapy to get his strength and movement back?

Eragon would hate the chronic pain and weakness. When bedridden, he could sort of ignore it and enjoy the quiet moments alone and the time with his friends.

Now, being forced to rebuild muscles he used to rely on without thinking, he feels embarrassed about his disabilities. His whole life, he'd been the reliable one. The joyous, if a little naïve one. Used to be able to run a farm with only his cousin for help. He could do it all. And now, walking across the room caused pain and took minutes.

It'd be a battle of both body and mind. Eragon is lucky to have a strong support group, and two best friends that wouldn't let him wilt. But he'd still struggle finding strengths outside of his body for ages, and learning to love himself even if he felt inadequate.

I had a couple ideas myself.

1) depending on how old Ismira is, she and Eragon learn how to walk together. It’s bittersweet for Eragon “competing” (used loosely) with a baby. But it’s a bonding moment and Ismira inspires and motivates him.

2) Murtagh comes over to help with heating pads and comfort methods. He might have vague memories of his own recovery from his own back injury since he was three when he got it. I also keep picturing him doing that thing where he has Eragon against his back, Eragon’s arms over Murtagh’s shoulders, and slowly walk-slides around with Eragon.

Murtagh also understands the injured pride that Eragon has.

Would a motorized wheelchair help Eragon with his independence? It’s nowhere near the same as walking, and he does have to have people help lift him if he can’t lift himself in and out of it. But it is motion… and a little niece might like to go for a ride until she starts messing with the controls. Then she has to be handed off. 😉🤭

In the summer of 2024, my children and I drove to Spain to explore the Ebro Delta. It was July–August, yet this place felt surprisingly peaceful.Riumar is nothing like the typical Spanish coast. You leave the highway, drive another 40–50 minutes through endless rice fields, and suddenly reach a shoreline of white sand dunes stretching toward the Mediterranean.This is one of Europe’s most important stopover points for migratory birds. Pink flamingos gather in the lagoons, and birdwatchers often outnumber ordinary tourists. Most travelers never come here—they are looking for busy beaches, nightlife, and large resorts. But locals, nature lovers, and ornithologists know just how special this landscape is.What fascinated me most was the sand. It didn’t feel static. It flowed like water, shimmered in the sunlight, and seemed to change color every moment. I wanted to capture that softness and movement, so I used delicate pastel tones, pearlescent pigments, and flowing brushstrokes to make the dunes feel almost alive.You may notice a small figure of my son in the painting. My children occasionally appear in my stories on social media, and they are a huge part of my life, so sometimes they naturally find their way into my paintings as well. They are not portraits or the main subject—just small figures within the landscape, quietly reminding us of our own place in nature and inviting the viewer to step into the scene.

Murtagh somewhat accidentally winding up as a leader in a mages rebellion would be very funny.

He doesn't really mean to get involved. It's just that he stumbles upon the group while investigating other strange magical goings on. At first, he decides to look the other way. The treatment of human mages always made him uncomfortable, especially given that the elves, who are just exponentially more powerful no other way about it, are allowed to do as they please. He's allowed privileges by virtue of Thorn that he would otherwise never have. So if anybody asks if he's seen anything strange in his recent travels, no he did not.

When he sees one of the younger members running from city guards a few weeks later, he can't not act. This barely more than a boy can barely light a fire. His most impressive spell is for finding dropped needles. So he subtly casts a spell to help him get lost in a crowd. He follows him for a bit, just to make sure he gets home alright. And when Eragon asks him via mirror what he's gotten up to today, he says that he's actually been quite bored lately.

i was training a young person at work, and she referred to sexual assault as "SA" out loud, and i immediately was like, "no, it's sexual assault, call it what it is," bc idgaf if the algorithm overlords have taught y'all that you should fear direct language, how tf do any of you expect to ever address real issues with any amount of seriousness if you can't even say the words? imagine an advocate looking a sexual assault survivor in the eyes and asking "did he grape you?" it's absolutely fucking absurd, but these young interns and new hires are coming into an environment where we deal with survivors of all different kinds of abuse, and they're coming with the mindset that the words are as bad as the actions, and that makes them shitty at the job and look juvenile af

i HATE self-censorship for a lot of reasons, but being in crisis work makes it even more frustrating. who are you censoring for? like i am being so fr, WHO are you censoring for? have you even thought it through? people who have been raped know that they have been raped. if someone attempts suicide or is grieving someone who did, saying "sewer slide" isn't going to protect them from any of the feelings. a murder victim's family isn't going to feel better bc you said "unalived" instead of murdered. if anything, it's just extremely invalidating and othering. it's saying "what happened to you is so bad that i won't even say the word," which is NOT trauma-informed care. you are not protecting survivors/victims when you self-censor. the ONLY things you protect when you self-censor are the puritanical ideologies that are being encouraged by rich fascists who want your money and obedience

wouldn’t it be so funny if the the batkids had a secret trigger phrase system for galas? basically, every time bruce says a certain phrase during his speech, a batkid must do a specific unhinged thing.

here are a few examples:

“wayne enterprises is thriving”: jason has to kiss two fingers, point to the ceiling, before downing his glass

“proud to support gotham”: dick must yell “WOO YEAH GOTHAM BABY” like a frat pledge. every time. he once knocked over a senator’s mini canape tower doing it

“community matters”: damian has to silently take the nearest silverware/art/object of value, and pocket it while making unwavering eye contact with the nearest stranger (don’t ask how they managed to convince him to go along with the bit)

“family is everything”: tim sheds one award-winning tear. just one. that never fails to choke up those surrounding him.

and a bonus wildcard rule:

if bruce says anything about “gratitude,” EVERY batkid nods solemnly and whispers “for now.”

and you KNOW that they absolutely keep score as to whoever commits the best. the prize being that the winner gets to choose one (1) rule the others MUST abide by for a whole week.

previous prizes have included:

tim once won and made a house rule that no one was allowed to wake him up for anything (disaster. crime went up, gotham almost burned. but. rules are rules)

damian won and selected “no shoes inside the manor” and enforced it like a warlord (bruce had to brief the justice league in socks. wonder woman took a photo.)

dick made a rule that everyone had to compliment him before asking anything of him. it was hell.

steph (when she gets to play) forced them all to sync their jog cycles for one week (they looked like a mafia flash mob everywhere they went). (bruce was so done).

Okay, so specifics in each frame:

1) The welcome party: AWWWWWW!!!!! Eragon and co. rolling out the welcome wagon!

2) Murtagh’s annoyed WTH face! 🤣 Thorn’s face conveying 😀🤩😍🥰 SO CUTE AND SWEET!!!

3) Murtagh getting snooty about Eragon’s wardrobe. Dude, really?! He’s giving you clothes to borrow during your stay! There is such a thing as giving criticism without being an ass about it. Even Thorn doesn’t approve of this BS!

4) For some reason my brain kept reading “Yeah Blue looks good on you” and I was confused why Eragon was scolding Saphira for saying that. JUST NOW I finally read it right and saw that she says “yeah blue looks hideous on you.” Which is SO MUCH funnier and makes SO much more sense!!!! 🤣🤣🤣

5) That hug!!! 🤣🤣🤣 Eragon is SO DELIGHTED to have his friend and brother back, and Murtagh’s stunned almost death glare about the tight contact!

Beaded Rainbow Odenwald Shawl!

Lost my mind a little and added (if my math is correct) 5,615 beads to Nim Teasdale's Odenwald pattern. Anything worth doing is worth overdoing!

The goal was “soothingly weighted but not uncomfortable to wear, even as someone with chronic pain.” It could have been a little heavier, so maybe I’ll make a shawl with larger beads another time, but I’m very pleased with this one. I used size 6/0 seed beads, applied as I go with a .6mm crochet hook.

Yarn-wise, used 2 cakes of YarnArt Flowers. I knitted the fully purple sections from both, then knitted all the way through the yellow-oranges with a single ball. When I hit the beginning of red-oranges, I used yarn from both cakes, alternating between them. (Not the entirety of both, I played it by ear to make sure I made it through the full rainbow.)

I do have edited charts with bead placements. I will only share them with Nim's permission.

I've done A LOT of knitting/crochet this year while chronic illness kept me from my sewing machine, but I'm feeling much better now. There will be new quilts to look forward to soon, plus a few more yarn crafts to share in the meantime!
