Can we talk about the self-righteous animal welfarist who defend zoos by saying that they help animal conservation.. It's the most blatant greenwashing propaganda i've ever heard in my entire life

I think that it is less greenwashing and more just an overly-generous framing of what zoos are actually about. Many zoos absolutely do contribute to conservation, that is just not the primary reason they exist, or where most of their attention, effort or money goes.

These are primarily entertainment industries, but you really can’t get away with saying that anymore. So they have rebranded as conservation, and many of the people who have come to work for them as a result really do believe in that mission. But the fact that they contribute to conservation does not automatically erase all of the ethical issues of confining animals for entertainment, most of whom are not actually endangered.

I’ve examined all this in more detail on my animals as entertainment page, and on an article on zoos specifically here if you’re interested in reading.
