I've not seen anything on this yet so I'm gonna do it myself. HORIZON AND MYTHOLOGICAL SYMBOLISM

We can assume for the purposes of this metaphor that the Chariot line is a separate entity from FAS. The Horus, AKA Metal Devil. Named after the Egyptian god of Kings and the Sky.

The Khopesh, aka the Deathbringer, an Egyptian sword.

The Scarab, AKA Corruptor. Named after a common symbol in Egyptian mythology (from my limited and narrow understanding)

And Ted Faro. A man whose last name is a synonym of Pharoah, an ancient ruler.

The Pharoah asked Horus, God of kings, to serve him. Horus agrees for a time, granting a legion. But in his greed, Pharaoh overstepped and in Hubris saw himself as a god. Horus became angry and turned the legion against everyone, intent to raze humanity to the ground. Aware of this failure, Pharoah sought out Sobek(aka Elisabet), the god of fertility, and protection, to ask for help. Sobek told the Pharoah that there was no stopping the wrath of Horus. But with the Pharoah's riches as a sacrifice, the God of fertility would renew the land and bring back what was lost. Pharoah accepted, knowing there was no other option. Humanity was erased, but Sobek created a new God to aid in renewing the world.

Gaia. The mother of earth. Guardian of life.

Ted Faro saw himself as a god, and his Hubris led to mankind's fall. But Elisabet Sobeck? She could stand against the wrath of a corrupt army and see a solution. She made Gaia to outlast the rage of the Faro Plague.

And thus one God was made to kneel to another.

I noticed in HFW, in Thebes, Faro had statues of the goddess Sekhmet inside it. She's both a force of destruction and of healing. Patron of physicians and of warriors. She brings plagues and then medicine to heal those plagues. She's two sides of the Sun's power, to destroy or to bring life. She once almost annihilated humanity after Ra was mad at some of them and unleashed her from his eye as punishment. She became corrupted by the taste of human blood and was so overpowered, that the other gods had trouble stopping her altogether. Only by their combined efforts did they subdue Sekhmet. Like the combined efforts of the Alphas saved the world. Ted Faro effectively wiped out humanity. His original ideas that did good, became tainted when he got a metaphorical taste for human blood (in the form of making war machines and how much money and power it gave him). He had both the power to heal the world or to destroy it and he chose the latter. The image of Sekhmet as both a life bringer and a destroyer in his bunker shows how much he thought himself a god. Sekhmet is known as a goddess of redemption. Of second chances. Something Faro never got.

i’ll be so real, nothing hits like the horizon series. i’ve played hundreds upon hundreds of hours and i still find new voice lines from npcs, details in settlements and infrastructure i never noticed. it feels so alive and captivating and i would give anything to play it again for the first time.

my biggest pet peeve with the Horizon games, which I overwhelmingly recommend and love very much, is that Aloy doesn't have more body hair.

that girl should have hairy pits, arms, and legs. she has a BUSH and the cutest happy trail down her tummy, and you can't convince me otherwise.

on my second forbidden west playthrough im realizing that while the first time i played it i thought the bonding between aloy and beta was a bit rushed, I now understand it’s perfect.

the whole game echoes themes of trust and support. aloy constantly shirks other’s attempts to reach her (varl and erend in the early game especially) and pushes them away. whoever, I wholeheartedly believe that the single thing that flips her “I work alone” mentality is the “elisabet and Travis” datapoint in the hades proving lab.

this datapoint is fucking FASCINATING. we see aloy immediately excited to see elisabet only to be let down by the conversation: Travis extending a simple invitation to Elisabet only to be shut down immediately (and rather coldly). I think this stats point is a wake up call for aloy in the early game, especially as Sylens makes his comment afterward: “the exceptional walk in solitude.”

but aloy never wanted to be seen as exceptional. she never even wanted to stand out. all she wanted to do was be accepted. I think this moment is something of a hard reset and she’s forced to ask herself if that’s how she comes across to others—harried and distant. it even comes up later when she’s grilling tilda on what elisabet was really like. you can hear the nervousness in her voice as she asks, “so when you met her, she was… what? Aloof? Distant?”

all of this to say that as aloy learns more about what elisabet was like and how she sees time and time again through the side quests in the game that pushing people away and not communicating leads to nothing but sorrow, you can see her mentally building up to the moment where she essentially accepts beta as part of her family. she refuses to be distant and she refuses to run away. and when she loses beta she risks it all to save her.

I do think the Hank Green AI thing makes it abundantly clear that if you have ADHD or any other mental illness and/or you are prone to addiction you need to avoid AI at all costs. This shit will rope you in, and if you have a mental illness that say, starves your brain of dopamine, you're gonna be extra susceptible to that. I won't use AI for a lot of reasons but one of the big ones is knowing how it would fuck with my ADHD and bipolar. Like yes, it's bad for the environment and giving money to rich scumbags and runs on plagarism, but even more than all that, it's straight up not safe at all and you really shouldn't use it if for no other reason than to protect yourself from whatever the fuck it might do to you.

Human brains can recover from horrific and profound trauma, people can be shot in the head and live, my brother cracked his skull open and survived and is fine!! The only way AI can permanently harm you is if it convinces you to kill yourself, and it does that often enough I'd argue that alone is the only reason anyone needs to stay the fuck away from it forever.
