Toby if it where any other publisher I would have ran away
I feel horrible for fans who first experienced Deltarune any other way. Like there was a cryprtic tweet the night before, the twitter profile was all backed out. And then he sent out a link to a “Survey” and you downloaded a file from a random website called SURVEYPROGRAM and then opened it up and it asked you to make a character. And then the character got thrown away. And then it was Deltarune. And like. It was a fucking ride none of you will get to experience this
i remember people would refuse to download it because they were convinced he was fucking with us and people had to vehemently explain that it’s a GAME and not an evil computer virus prank but also wouldn’t say ANYTHING because toby made us swear for silence for 24 hours so it was just cryptic ravings of “trust me bro”
Oh and by ‘a cryptic tweet the night before’ they mean this btw
And the next day (can’t find screencaps of it from that day specifically but the icon and display name were still blacked out like above)
AND, in case that wasn’t sus enough, when you went to deltarune.com on October 31st 2018, it looked like THIS.
You were then directed to download a suspiciously large file called SURVEY_PROGRAM, which then gave you the ‘YOU ACCEPT EVERYTHING THAT WILL HAPPEN FROM NOW ON’ prompt before opening. At this point there had been not a whisper, not an inkling that this might be an actual new game, apart from the oddly large file size for a ‘survey.’
So yeah. Being around for Deltarune Ch 1’s release was WILD
What gets me is that Toby made the Deltarune site back before Undertale came out, and the only reason we know that is that he uploaded it to Wayback Machine himself.
Like before October 2018, there were seemingly no hits and no site traffic or searches for Deltarune dot com.
But. I mean, if you look at the history, as some redditors did.
The site itself goes back to july 2016, and at that point, all that was on it was. “Him.png”
The original version of Him.png itself is from 2015, and is just “this next experiment seems very very interesting” in wingdings.
Then in December 2016 it got updated so him.png said “"THREE HEROES APPEARED TO BANISH THE ANGELS HEAVEN” still in wingdings.
But the images are so dark (darker than dark) that they just look like black pngs until you fuck with the contrast and brightness and stuff.
(I can see some of the wingdings on the first one if I turn the brightness on my phone all the way up)
And, I mean, it seems like nobody would have known any of these things because by the time anybody cared about deltarune or was looking for Deltarune dot com, it was 2018. So Toby or Temmie or somebody bought the domain name and was making dark pngs in 2015 to 2016. And then put it on Wayback machine for people to find 2 years later.
