Ironically, Hawks reaffirming Twice’s belief about his unluckiness in an attempt to suppress his will to fight helped Twice overcome his learned helplessness. Twice largely followed whatever his friend group wanted because he didn’t trust his own judgment. His few attempts to act on his own tended to backfire despite his potential. Hawks, by making the implicit message from society that he internalized explicit - that Twice was just unlucky and what happened to him couldn’t be helped - gave Twice the determination to push against that notion.

It’s also important that Twice shared his final moments with Toga. While Twice couldn’t envision himself as anything other than a villain, like Toga he was one of the few members of the League who believed in some concept of a future. He wanted a future supporting his friends at the very least, though unlike Toga he wasn’t the type to think of things systematically.

Toga until this point didn’t care for the rigid roles of hero and villain. She thanked Twice for saving her in his final moments when hero society rejects the concept of a villain’s ability to save anyone. Against expectations, Toga also acted selflessly in this scene by calmly keeping it together to support Twice at the end of his life rather than immediately acting on impulse.

This scene leads to both positive and negative character development in Toga. On the negative side, she ends up adopting the villain label and a hardline view of heroes and villains in response to Twice’s death (combined with Ochako’s rejection). On the other hand, Toga mourned the death of someone she loved for the first time rather than reveling in the bloodshed. It’s not clear she ever processed mourning Sato or her other victims in the midst of her euphoria over obtaining access to blood. She starts to consider the lives of those she admired and their consent in this arc and its aftermath.

This is probably the most culturally important thing I’ll ever seen in my lifetime if I’m being honest. I want this affixed over my mantle, embroidered into my denim, and emblazoned into my flesh so that generations to come may never forget this 1938 gem of an illustration. Artist was obviously a leg man, but I have never seen a female alien love interest designed as THIS alien before. She’s uniquely hairy, bugged-eyed, lines would indicate at least a partial exoskeleton, she has escaped being saddled with the mammories that a non-mammal being would not have, yet she’s got it bad for Space Force Leatherhead and he is so into her. I can practically hear his prose of her cabochon eyes of nebula violet, glowing with the passion to know and be known, in the starlight. The green of her body turning more vivid as discovery (and carnal knowledge) consume her conscious mind.

To suggest a red-blooded, human man could love Greedo’s cousin? Desire her??

This is fantastic, in every sense. How many lives did this change forever?
