Very weird little family tradition, when I was a kid my family would play this game. If you said something that might not be completely true, you had to say "cabbage, cabbage, cabbage" with a straight face to prove it. To be clear this was teasing and not serious. The joke was that when you're 6 and you're put on the spot to say something silly with your family looking at you expectantly after you swear you brushed your teeth, it's impossible not to laugh. And I guess when you're in your 30s and your kid turns the tables on you after you say dinner will only be 10 more minutes, it's also impossible not to laugh. We all laughed every time. So it was really fucking surreal to hear "cabbage" as a totally different inside family joke all season. and there's not even anyone else now who will get it.

so much of the dynamic between lee dong-sik and han joo-won is this constant negotiation and renegotiation of trust. has dong-sik finally found someone he believes trusts him? has joo-won finally found someone he can trust? and a part of what makes it so compelling is that when the stars align and the answer to both these questions is yes they work together so beautifully well it’s amazing to watch. and another part is that they both really, really want the answer to be yes

i saw a post from someone lamenting that their fic idea wouldn't be popular and so they decided not to write it.

for the love of all that you care about, never do this! i have seen so many people over the years kill their fandom joy through repeatedly only engaging with what they think is likely to be popular.

this is fandom. this is where the freaks live, not just for sexy freaks but asexy freaks as well. sometimes fandom likes things that you don't expect and other times they bounce off things they should like. there's no good rhyme or reason to it because people aren't predictable puzzles.

whatever you want to write most, you should write it regardless of how you think fandom is gonna react.

fandom won't know to miss the ideas you never wrote, but you will.

Children, in the olden days fanfiction was written on a typewriter, copied and sent by snail mail. Getting one one of those letters from across the world was every bit as exciting as getting a notification that your favorite writer posted a new fic.

The precedent line is especially amusing when you bear in mind that “A Fragment Out of Time” is not only the first Star Trek slashfic to be published in a widely distributed magazine: it’s believed by some to be the first slashfic of any kind to be widely published.

I am begging you. Please learn about stress/discomfort tolerance. Practice raising it. You need this to survive. If someone online can ruin your day with a throwaway comment, you desperately need to understand discomfort tolerance and consciously, systematically build that shit.

Also! Stress tolerance is such an important skill that having a learning disability in that area is a major symptom of a whole lot of other disabilities/mental illnesses! Struggling with it is a huge part of life! It sucks!

Am I saying everyone with misophonia needs to listen to chewing noises all day? No. But you need to find ways to tolerate it enough that you don't treat others like shit if they make a mouth noise near you.

No, you don't have to read the fic with your trigger tags. But you do need to be able to handle scrolling past the tags without being upset.

It is hard! But not having it also makes you so so so easy to manipulate. That grandma is racist AF because her mom raised her to be uncomfortable around black people and she never fought that discomfort. Trans people make so many cis people uncomfortable and that discomfort turns into bigotry real fast.

Letting your discomfort dictate your actions and beliefs about things is a great way to become a terrible person. Learn. Discomfort. Tolerance.

it's fascinating how many suggestions for practicing distress tolerance in the comments were just part of existing in life until the most recent couple of generations. This isn't a "everything was better before" argument. I also like to be able to just find what i like and not have to go to radio stations that play a bunch of stuff I don't care for or buy entire albums to listen to music. I pay more than one subscription fee to avoid commercials. I love AO3 and all the tags. And as OP said, discomfort has always been part of how bigotry works. We didn't magically have more distress tolerance when it comes to prejudices or even minor differences. Bullying people who were even slightly different from the norm was common and accepted. But there is definitely something lost when people from an early age can see and read and listen to only exactly what they want, and the expectation that everything is designed to facilitate finding it. Using the library and the used book store when I was younger meant i read so many things that were terrible, or a toal mixed bag, or "problematic" in ways I was just learning how to process and understand, but also was just a lot of fun. These are the kinds of things people are talking about in the comments and it's wild to see the effects of such a huge shift in how we get our entertainment.
