all fanfiction is funnier and sexier and vastly better-written when you read it at three in the morning, in the dark, lying on your side, tucked into bed, with screen rotate turned off. that’s just how it works. that’s just facts.

Fanfiction is becoming people’s primary form of entertainment right now because most media right now is so cheap, bland, recycled, and sponsored by people who love money more than the source material. Fanfiction is written for free by people who genuinely love what they’re writing about. That’s why it’s better. That’s why it’s more satisfying. Fanfiction is a home-cooked meal made for yourself and for your friends. Media today is junky fast food spoiled by too much grease and the knowledge that the people producing it are being criminally mistreated and underpaid.
also because in fanfiction, most of the time, the author is writing it not to tell some specialimportant, life changing message, but to simply make people happy, to make themselves happy. there is no obligation to have a huge shocking dramatic twist, or to be super complicated, or to have some sort of “moral.” fanfiction is primarily for enjoyment, written by people who are typically not getting paid for their work, by people who decided they wanted to spend time and write out more for these characters.
fanfiction is almost always made with the sole intent to be enjoyable to the readers, without any obligation to tell a true life, high stakes, morality tale.
*bawling* we are so fucking lucky
fanfiction literally changed my life for the better. i dont know where id be without it.
This.. I write because it honestly makes me happy. I might not be very good but if just one of my stories brings even one person a fleeting moment of happiness then I have achieved success as a writer.
“what are you reading?”
“its a…online book.”
“oh cool, what’s it about?”
“….uh….”
I love that everyone just knows
Or…alternately:
“what are you writing?”
“it’s a….story.”
“oh cool, what’s it about?”
“…uh…”
“can i read it?”
“Oooh what are you drawing? Can I see?”
I FEEL THIS on a personal level
no but also “what website is that?”
“you have a tumblr? can i follow you?”
“what kind of blog is ur tumblr?”
World Heritage Post
“So what are you working on right now?”
Reblog if you think fanfiction is a legitimate form of creative writing.

How it feels to read a really good fic and find the author has dozens more like it
As a fic writer, i need every reader to know that:
I don’t care if your comment is coherent. I know what you mean and i love you
I don’t care if you ramble. I read every word and i love you
I don’t care if you leave a comment on a fic from four years ago or leave comments/kudos on like ten of my fics in one go. This isn’t IG, pls stalk my AO3. I love you
I don’t care if you mention the same thing in your comment that four other people have already mentioned. It’s actually really useful to know what resonated with people and I love everyone who takes the time to tell me they liked a particular turn of phrase
I don’t mind if your comment is super long or just a couple of sentences, i love them all
I love you
i don't "just" read fanfic. what i do it's a lifestyle, it's a religion.
You fanfiction people are insane. Y'all will say shit like “I hate writing original fiction, I prefer it when the characters have an established dynamic.” And then headcannon the characters to where their dynamic is completely different.
“I like fanfiction because using an established world is a good shorthand for other readers!” And then write shit like “The avengers but they’re actually the starving orphaned children of a kindly french barrel maker during the 30 years war.”
Essentially we play with characters the way we used to play with Barbies
All jokes aside, in an era when artists are encouraged to squeeze every last drop of joyless profit out of their passions, the fundamental un-monetizeability of “G.I. Joe / Bionicle / Polly Pocket Crossover AU of the Iran-Contra affair” is King Shit. Rigid boundaries stifle art, especially those imposed by capital. Seeing artists follow their unhinged joy is a port in the storm of the modern media landscape.
Me writing sexy fan fiction:
The people reading it:
my favorite thing about navigating fanfiction is finding a really good one and being all “oh boy this was good, I hope they have more!” and literally every other story they’ve ever written was for like Miami Vice
