Using centripetal force to prevent a $4 billion healthcare cost
1. Doctor finds anecdotal evidence that people are passing kidney stones after riding on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Disney World
2. Doctor makes 3-D model of kidney, complete with stones and urine (his own), takes it on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad 60 times
3.Ā āThe stones passed 63.89 percent of the time while the kidneys were in the back of the car. When they were in the front, the passage rate was only 16.67 percent. Thatās based on only 60 rides on a single coaster, and Wartinger guards his excitement in the journal article: āPreliminary study findings support the anecdotal evidence that a ride on a moderate-intensity roller coaster could benefit some patients with small kidney stones.āā
4.Ā āSome rides are going to be more advantageous for some patients than other rides. So I wouldnāt say that the only ride that helps you pass stones is Big Thunder Mountain. Thatās grossly inaccurate.ā
5.Ā āHis advice for now: If you know you have a stone thatās smaller than five millimeters, riding a series of roller coasters could help you pass that stone before it gets to an obstructive size and either causes debilitating colic or requires a $10,000 procedure to try and break it up. And even once a stone is broken up using shock waves, tiny fragments and ādustā remain that need to be passed. The coaster could help with that, too.ā
SCIENCE: IT WORKS
Update:Ā
āIn all, we used 174 kidney stones of varying shapes, sizes and weights to see if each model worked on the same ride and on two other roller coasters,ā Wartinger said. āBig Thunder Mountain was the only one that worked. We tried Space Mountain and Aerosmithās Rock ānā Roller Coaster and both failed.āWartinger went on to explain that these other rides are too fast and too violent with a G-force that pins the stone into the kidney and doesnāt allow it to pass.āThe ideal coaster is rough and quick with some twists and turns, but no upside down or inverted movements,ā he said.

I just love this because itās HILARIOUS and yet also a perfect archetypal example of The Scientific Method:
1. Hypothesis
2. Experiment
3. Results
4. DiscussionĀ
5. Conclusions
6. GOTO 1 (the scientific method is iterative, donāt forget that part)
was this like⦠done in cooperation with disney management or did some  random scientist go through bag check with a 3d printed kidney and a bottle of piss and start looking for big thunder mountain fastpasses
He asked first!
Of course, the researchers had to get permission from Disney World before bringing the model kidney onto the rides. āIt was a little bit of luck,ā Wartinger recalls. āWe went to guest services, and we didnāt want them to wonder what was going onātwo adult men riding the same ride again and again, carrying a backpack. We told them what our intent was, and it turned out that the manager that day was a guy who recently had a kidney stone. He called the ride manager and said, do whatever you can to help these guys, theyāre trying to help people with kidney stones.ā

Anyone else only in their 20s but feel like they are running out of time to get their life together??
Donāt. I felt this way too, in my twenties, but you know what? I began transitioning at 30. I went back to grad school at 32. Iām living my best life, and while Iām a little behind the curve compared to some of my classmates on some things, Iām also so far ahead of them on others. You need follow nobodyās schedule but your own. Life is hard and the world isnāt doing any of us favors. Be kind to yourself, and remember that you still have plenty of time. The only difference between starting now and 5 or 10 years earlier is now you have more experience.
I needed to hear this so badly
and not a single person was harmed by my posting this.
Step 1.1-1.infinity: pratice every possible bad outcome in your head until you are paralyzed by anxiety and doubt.
I just want to belabor this point for a moment.
These images are not explicit. These pictures show two adults, engaging in consensual kissing. Thatās it. It isnāt violent, it isnāt pornographic. Itās literally just two adult humans sharing a kiss.
Itās ludicrous and insulting that ā especially in 2018 ā this is flagged, either by some sort of badly-designed algorithm, or by shitty homophobic people.
And to just restate something that I reblogged a little bit ago:
the reality is that for a lot of the LGTBQ+ community, particularly younger members still discovering themselves and members in extremely homophobic environments where most media sites were banned (but Tumblr wasnāt even considered important enough to be), this was a bastion of information and self-expression.
I am so lucky. I am so massivelyĀ lucky and privileged. Iām rich, Iām white, Iām a CIS male in a heterosexual relationship. I can look just about anywhere in the world and see myself represented in art and media. My experience has been normalized to the exclusion and oppression of people who donāt share that experience.
That. Must. Change.
I can only imagine what it must feel like to fight every second of ever day just to existĀ in a world that is filled with people who share my demographic (but not my values) using their wealth and power and privilege to attack you, simply for being who you are, for existing. I can only imagine how terrible and suffocating and exhausting that must be.Ā
According to marginalized and vulnerable people, this change in policy will directly hurt them, and thatās indefensible.Ā
The ridiculousness of this policy change can be simply illustrated by the image here being flagged. Why was it flagged? Because homophobia is rampantĀ and too many people who should stand up against it are cowards who donāt want to risk their own wealth and privilege in the service of people who canāt defend themselves.
I applaud and admire and respect the hell out of everyone in the LGBTQ community here who have formed networks and friendships and relationships and support structures for each other. You have worked so hard to create and maintain a safe space for each other, and Iām embarrassed, appalled, and furious that people who look like me are making your lives ā hell, your very existenceĀ ā so hard.Ā
Iām just one person, and maybe it wonāt matter or make a difference, but I stand with you, not just on this website, but in our entire universe. I see you. I love you. I value you.Ā
Watch: Terry Crews has some brilliant points about feminism ā including an apt parallel to Civil Rights.
Tumblr has been a real wild ride for me, man. Even through the many times over the years that I figured my blog could get deleted, it still feels really weird to imagine actually losing this blog and all the years of experiences Iāve shared on here.
The part of me thatās exhausted of fighting is about ready to simply let go and try to move on, but thereās a bigger part that canāt fully accept that all of the best parts of what Tumblr used to be for me and so many others are justā¦over, forever, ya know? They were over, in my opinion, long before this particular lazy management decision, but to know that itās final (for me) is a bit rough.
Oh wellsies, guys. As much as Iāve been a snarky, dramatic asshole on this website, I have also really enjoyed much of my time here sharing my life & work with you, getting to know some of you as true friends (love ya, Joey!), and learning about myself & others in ways I donāt feel Iād have been as challenged to do elsewhere. Itās been really fucking great, because so many of you are really fucking great, and Iām going to be forever at least a little pissy that Tumblr & awful people just absolutely destroyed this place lol.
