in mockingjay, it’s implied that Katniss stayed in the hospital for several weeks after being half-burned in the final attack. Which tell us that, when she saw Effie waiting for her in the mansion room (before snow’s execution) Effie had had those several weeks of recovery for herself too —at least for the most obvious injuries that the nine months of torture had potentially left on her body to fade out. And that makes me wonder: Did Coin require Effie to wear her usual clothes, full Capitol attire (wig to hills) to hide the proofs of torture her body couldn’t heal in time?
Yes, it’s symbolic to make the last living escort, in her known murderous skin, lead the Mockingjay to her final act of finally ending the Games, but i can’t stop thinking if that was the only reason to make Alma, government-standardized-grey-jumpsuit, Coin demand the use of something that embodies so much of everything she loathes about the Capitol….
So i wonder, if the choice was to either promote empathy for figures like Effie Trinket, by pulling her closer to the damaged crew, or to officially include the Capitol’s extravagance in the ceremony, what would cause the least damage? Wouldn’t it be worst to allow the Escort, who people were supposed to loath, to wear each one of her scars —as the proof of real struggle— fostering the fundamental equality Coin was so scared of? Wouldn’t it be worst to let them see what’d been done with her during the war?
I mean, when Peeta described his time underground, he mentions how he’d been forced to watch as the butchers mangled Darios, limb by limb, until he died, even if he didn’t have any informations about the revolution (which says how much the torture was really used for interrogation, and how much it was simply punishment), and that was a great peak of what was being done to the people who’re somehow related to the mockingjay crew in those cells —being involved with it or not. So knowing that, canonically, in the end of catching fire, Effie had been accused of treason for supporting them, and knowing what is done with people during a dictatorship when they’re arrested for it, we can paint a very close picture of what they did to her, as the direct responsible for 12, whose personal incompetence leaded to the war.
However, Effie Trinket was not part of the rebels. She had been arrested for interfering in bigger matters due to her personal feelings, and that’s why she was tortured. Just like Darios, Effie’s imprisonment was an unavoidable consequence. Therefore, Coin, whom wasn’t very coy of exposing just how much her ideals ran far from equality, wouldn’t like to present the evil Capitol Escort, the symbol that had to be rebranded, but not forgiven, as someone who physically payed for the cause just like everyone else. She didn’t want to give her the chance to flip herself as a martyr for any cause. She didn’t want to present her as human.
