Do you think it should be mandatory for people with driver's licenses to take a refresher driving course every set number of years* – ideally low-cost or funded with taxes – to hammer in the basics of driving, road rules, safety tips** etc, rather than only having to pass a driving test once?

**safety tips could include reinforcing why it's important to keep a certain distance from the car ahead of you and how the safe distance changes depending on various circumstances; how little time speeding/weaving through traffic actually saves vs how much it increases the risks; safety around cyclists/motorcyclists; examples throughout of what can and has happened when people ignore these things; maybe even basic maintenance so you don't get stranded with a flat and no idea how to put the spare on etc etc.

(also re: work, for the sake of this poll let's say it'd be similar to jury duty in the US, in that your employer is required to allow you paid time off work, or your school is required to give you unpunished time off, to complete this refresher course because it's mandatory. And fwiw I'm talking everywhere there are cars & resources to support this, not in any specific country. Obviously some people will still be dicks but we're not talking about them here)

Genuinely I just don't think people younger than 35 know how good they have it. I distinctly remember the year in my childhood that it became illegal to smoke in restaurants, I remember what it was like when people used to smoke indoors everywhere, you all think it's cool because it's this illicit fun thing people are doing drunk outside bars now, you don't remember what it was like when fucking everything reeked all the time and you couldn't get away from it and how life changing it was when you could suddenly go out to eat and everything didn't taste like ash and all your clothes and hair didn't stink for days when you got home.

The (European) sun is a deadly laser, stay safe everyone

☝️🤓 it’s because the further you move toward the earth’s poles, the lower the angle of the sun is at the hottest parts of the day, meaning the radiation hits your whole body, causing it to feel 10-20 degrees warmer than the thermometer reading will tell you. People from tropical climes, aka close to the equator, are used to the sun’s radiation hitting a much smaller target- their head and shoulders.

Also the further you move toward the poles the more pronounced the difference between the length of day and night is. Worst part of a far-north (or south) heatwave is it doesn’t get dark long enough for meaningful cooling.

It’s not the heat. It very literally is the sun.

Hello, I work for a large moderately evil corporation and for at least five years now I have to sign a yearly thing to say I will never ever have one of these devices in the same room as me while I work.

My large moderately evil employer takes it for granted that these things are spying on me at all times, and you should too.

Why do I always have to be the more understanding person?

Why am I always the one expected to stay calm, stay patient, stay emotionally mature, even when I am hurting too?

I understand that you are struggling. I understand that pain changes people. I understand that life can make people distant, irritable, reactive, overwhelmed, withdrawn. I understand all of that more than you probably realize.

But at what point am I allowed to stop shrinking my own feelings to make other people more comfortable?

Because somehow my pain always becomes the “manageable” one. The quieter one. The one expected to wait patiently while everyone else’s emotions take up the entire room.

And honestly, it is exhausting.

Exhausting always being the one who sees every perspective. The one who gives grace. The one who explains away hurtful behavior because “they are going through a lot.” The one who stays soft even after being hurt repeatedly.

At some point, understanding others started turning into abandoning myself.

And I think people forget this: someone else struggling does not automatically erase the pain they caused you.

You are still allowed to be hurt.

You are still allowed to feel disappointed.

You are still allowed to say, “I know you are suffering, but the way you treated me still mattered.”

Because empathy should not require self-erasure.

You should not have to emotionally disappear just because someone else is having a difficult time.

You should not have to silence your hurt to protect people from feeling guilty about hurting me.

And you should not constantly be expected to carry relationships through sheer emotional awareness while everyone else gets to act carelessly.

Sometimes the “understanding person” is tired too.

Tired of over-explaining. Tired of being patient. Tired of translating other people’s emotions while nobody tries to understand theirs. Tired of swallowing hurt because they are afraid expressing it will make them seem selfish or cruel.

You are allowed to have limits too.

You are allowed to stop romanticizing emotional endurance.

You are allowed to want relationships where care goes both ways.

And wanting that does not make you cold. It makes you someone who is finally realizing that compassion for others should not come at the cost of compassion for yourself.
