How is she doing this
I literally cannot get over the intricacies and tragedy and beauty of the Haddock family.
Stoick was a Viking's Viking, strong and fierce and proud, and he fell hard for a woman who was peaceful and quirky and equally as proud. When he married her, he married without thinking about his future as chief but only the life he hoped to spend with her. Only once he did ascend did he realize how ill-suited Valka was to the role, how much his new subjects openly didn't care for her. Without the youthful blindness of love, he realized that strategically, Valka wasn't made to be a Chieftess, to lead a island at war.
When their first and only child was born, too small, too weak, the village's scorn towards Valka transferred to her runt of a son. Only Stoick's status kept Hiccup from being sent to sea. But now he had a weird wife and strange child he adored with all his heart all the while serving a village who hated anyone weird or strange. Then Valka was gone and all Stoick had was a boy too much like her. Suddenly he was afraid Valka's unpopular opinions and manner would follow his son, doom him before he'd even taken his first steps.
As Hiccup grew into himself, Stoick started trying to adjust his mannerisms, make him more like into a Viking. If they had been born as fishermen with no titles, Stoick would have gladly supported his boy and his oddities. But Hiccup was to be chief, be a warrior, he HAD to be if Berk (and Hiccup) were to survive. The more he tried to shape Hiccup into something he wasn't, the more Hiccup pulled back and the more they misunderstood each other. This continued on for years, each essentially talking in a different language to the other. Until Stoick was forced to see his son in all his glory.
Stoick wept at Hiccup's recovery bed after the Red Death. He wept for Valka, for her presence surely would have prevented father and son from becoming so estranged. He wept for himself, for not realizing Hiccup was an artist and in love with Astrid and still believed in trolls and a hundred other quirks he had missed in his singleminded focus to make Hiccup one of them. He wept for Hiccup who had to break free from the tribe's traditions, fight a monster, lose his leg and nearly die all the while thinking his father didn't love him.
From then on, Stoick made a point to not always be a Chieftain but to be a father first sometimes. He openly supported his son, even when he didn't understand and then made a point to try and understand him. He'd smile listening to Hiccup rant about some new dragon species and think of Valka gushing about the new healing herbs she'd learned about. He'd loved Valka for her peculiarities and he loved Hiccup for his as well. It didn't hurt that Hiccup's had saved the island and brought about a new way of life. The village accepted him now but that didn't matter in the least. He was Stoick's son and he never failed again to mention how much he loved him.

beuper. verb. "to form ponsilza"
ponsilza. noun. "the result of beupering"
The strongest guy in the Magnus Archives is that one guy who was so obsessed with his dog that he just walked right out of the Spiral because it was her dinnertime
This is one of my favorite episodes. Fears can't hurt you if you're chill enough. The guy who walked in a spiral for four hours and then just left because he remembered he had somewhere to be is, to me, the avatar of the entities' fear
strongest people in the magnus archives:
guy who kept the coffin of the buried in his living room and used it as a coffee table
walked out of the spiral because his dog needed dinner
the plumber who was so inattentive that the stranger put on a whole spectacle for him and he straight-up missed it all
the guy whose primary concern with the evil taxidermists was whether or not they were money laundering (they weren't)
AND he didn’t even realize evil taxidermy was at play for the longest time because he came in like “I love and respect autistic people, of course I’m not judging eye contact”
we CANNOT forget the woman that was actively being swallowed by the buried and when there was nothing she could possibly do she lied down on the ground and accepted her fate so thoroughly and with such calm that it had to barf her back up.
And if my memory is correct she KEPT TAKING THE UNDERGROUND TO WORK

You don't have to grieve alone.

this clip makes me so emotional. i feel like this sometimes, at night especially. That the whole wide world may swallow me whole. That i’m wide-eyed in the face of god. that I’m not a victim of smallness but rather its loving disciple.
