I love movies about hope, and I especially love how Project Hail Mary and Iron Lung respectively handle the ideas of hope.
PHM is what many people may traditionally think of as hope, I think. It's finding the courage to be brave for someone else, to step up even in circumstances that are unfair by every definition of the word. It's finding the answers you were both looking for, it's the power of like-minded individuals no matter where you're from to fight for a better future, to be able to be brave and help people. It's a future you might not see, not the one that you envisioned returning to, but you'll see it in a place where you will ultimately be happy, and it's hope that you helped cultivate with a friend, a friendship that you both care for.
PHM, to me, says that its okay to hope for a better future, even if you are scared to do anything, and even more than that, it's encouraged for you to look for those answers even if you are scared. It encourages hope you find in community, in your relationships, in the beauty of the world, in the answers that you might find, even if you're not sure that they'll be answers you like, even if the circumstances are shitty.
Iron Lung feels like a different kind of hope, almost like the other side of the coin that we flip. It's the hope you hold even in the face of complete uncertainty, in the lack of information given to you in terrible circumstances. It's when you have to improvise and make your own solutions to problems that wouldn't have existed before now, its finding that courage to be brave for yourself and saying that you just want to live, goddammit. It's letting yourself be angry, to kick and scream and fight with every millimeter of your being to see the light at the end of that fucking tunnel, no matter how many times you realize you've taken a wrong turn and have to fight through the dark all over again.
Iron Lung, to me, says that it's okay to hope for a future, even in the face of complete and utter uncertainty. It's okay to get angry, to break down, to scream and shout and fight for yourself, and in the end, to fight for everyone else too, because you've already got the grit under your fingernails and blood on your teeth. It's encouraging you, even in the worst possible circumstances, to just keep fighting, and even if the end result hurts, you've still made a change. Even if the change was for yourself or for the collective future of everything, your hope is covered in dirt and blood and it's getting up off the ground to keep going.
They both have hope. One hope is the hope that is ethereal, that guides you into the bright light, while the other is the remains of the war it had to fight to get there. And today? Both of those kinds of hope are so incredibly valuable.
I love Project Hail Mary. I love Iron Lung.
