said this on bluesky but:
i genuinely encourage non black people to engage with this, who might be worried they can't because of the word "nigga" because they feel like it's overstepping. the only way it would be overstepping is saying it to me when ur not black, but please don't be afraid to engage with black art.
i kinda get annoyed when non black people police other non blacks on how to engage with black culture because it creates a problem where non black people avoid us all together which can be extremely isolating and create even MORE tension and overall being uneducated.
Barnes and Nobles is gonna start serving food and alcohol.
Everybody’s cracking jokes about how it’s a desperate attempt to stay relevant in the age of Amazon.
But you know what? Props to them. This is exactly what Blockbuster didn’t do. At no point was Blockbuster like “Hey, movie rentals aren’t the lucrative enterprise they once were. Perhaps it’s time we become known for our cheesy garlic bread.”
Okay but…if someone wants to take me on a date to a Barnes and noble and get me dinner and a drink and then let me peruse the stacks like I’m not saying no. A sandwich, a beer, and 2-5 books on various topics I hope I’ll someday read about? Good night.
The Swedish equivalent of Blockbuster is now best known for its candy, snacks and sodas.
This is El Ateneo Grand Splendid, an old theatre turned bookstore in Buenos Aires:
The stage itself was turned into a cafe:
You can’t even begin to comprehend the massive amounts of money this place makes, despite the fact that they turned the theatre boxes into reading nooks like this:
I’ve literally spent days holed up in there reading books for free while also consuming massive amounts of coffee and pastries.
Adapt or die, people.
OMG that’s AMAZING!
sometimes, I fall head over heels in love with a place. El Ateneo Grand Splendid is incredible. I am in love. At the very least, in lust – that could very easily escalate to love. Le sigh.
this is hilarious to me because not only have I been on tumblr long enough to remember the first time El Ateneo Grand Splendid went viral around here, I actually went there last year (while I was passing through Argentina for a weekend) entirely because tumblr told me to
Hamsterdam
Theres no fukin betterer way zum flyen.
HOW TO TURN OFF GOOGLE AI in GMAIL:
Open Gmail in your browser
Click on the Gear Icon ⚙️ in the upper right
In the General Tab, scroll down to "Smart Features" and UNCHECK THE BOX. It is about halfway down.
Then, right below that is Google Workspace smart features. Click on the "Manage Workspace Smart Features" and make sure both toggles are OFF
after all the magical girl talk on this blog lately i felt uniquely qualified to make this
i saw someone say nobody needs to know what a .txt file is anymore. what the fuck is the world coming to
unironically i think we need to bring back computer labs because APPARENTLY some people WERENT taught basic computer literacy and internet safety in school
things about computers/the internet i think kids should be formally taught in schools because theyre important to know and the amount of soon to be grown adults i know who know NOTHING about any of these is quite frankly almost all of them (and resources to learn if you dont know these things, because its never to late to get better with computers)
how to troubleshoot by yourself when you have a technical problem
what common file types are
some very basics on how to use ""developer tools"" on your computer (because i cant think of a better way to refer to them) like task manager and command prompt (and their mac equivalents, terminal and activity monitor ofc)
how to read and understand a privacy policy and what your personal data is, as well as what it being collected actually means and steps you can take to keep it private
how to understand terms of service (hey. if you have trouble with reading legalese and worry about being able to understand these policies anyways, here's a site that gives basic summaries of privacy policies and ToS)
what a cookie actually is
internet privacy and your digital footprint!! seriously i dont know why we stopped teaching people that they shouldnt be putting their entire real identity online in a world where your online actions can ruin you irl
basic safety measures like antivirus software (and why you should use it or if the built in one on windows or mac is enough for you) and backing up your computer (also a mac guide)
common keyboard shortcuts (and on mac)
as an additional note: things i think everyone should know on computers and the internet but schools may bit hesitant to teach about for whatever moral/legal standards schools pretend to operate on
vpns and adblockers! (btw for most of these where you can pay for things im purposefully not recommending any specific software but seriously just use ublock origin for an adblocker)
how to not get a virus while pirating something
what a temporary email is and when to use one
red flags that you shouldn't trust a website (and how to quickly check the security of a site)
what javascript on a website does and how to disable it to get around paywalls
ok one last addition! if you want to take it one level higher, i think learning the very basics of at least one programming language is good for people. it makes computers less scary and it makes you feel very cool, and a lot of people get discouraged about it because it seems overly complicated and hard to learn outside a formal classroom setting, so heres some resources for learning the very basics of python (because i consider it the easiest language to learn and knowing one language will make it easier to learn others)
an online compiler so you dont need to download anything or worry about running code directly on your computer if that makes you nervous
a basic video guide to introduce you to python and walk you through beginner steps
a guide to some syntax and commands you should know (this was literally my lifeline in my first CS class)
some performance tasks to give you things to code to practice and assess yourself
the thing that really cheeses my cake about flies getting in my house is they clearly don't want to be there anyway. like at least the ants trying to steal cereal from my pantry had a goal and a plan. you are just here because you're too stupid to use a window twice
Adding “cheeses my cake” to my vocabulary now
you can do this with a lot of compound words where the first half means something different as a verb. seems to work particularly well with foods and animals. examples: you know what really
butters my milk
pops my corn
hedges my hog
rails my road
jellies my fish
hams my burglar
earths my worm
In light of the United States government shutdown impacting SNAP benefits, I've seen a lot of posts giving advice about how to find food banks, and reminders that it's not shameful to use them. That's good, I'm glad to see it. But as someone who has experience having to get things from food charities, a few reminders:
If you want to donate to a food bank and help people, either give money or see if the bank has a list of specific requests. Don't give random shit from the back of your cabinet or run out to buy whatever strikes your fancy just because it makes you feel good to put a physical item in a donation box. Nobody wants your random expired cans of mystery meat, and food banks can stretch a dollar a lot farther than you can.
Food banks are often not accessible to people with food restrictions or special dietary needs. If someone has ARFID and can't eat beans, but the food bank only has beans and rice, telling them to just "go to the food bank" doesn't actually help. If someone keeps kosher but the free food event is only giving away bagged lunches with ham and cheese sandwiches, that free food event is useless to them.
Poor people deserve to eat good, nutritious, tasty food. If you see somebody who's food insecure talking about how they wish they had something better, don't shame them and tell them "it could be worse." If you see a poor person splurging on higher-quality meals or just an extra little treat, don't shame them or act like they're lying about food insecurity. It is fucking horrible to exist on the bare minimum, and endless days of the same flavor of ramen, or rice, or whatever other cheap thing you can access, is just about the most demoralizing thing in the fucking world. And before anyone says, "Oh, but you can jazz up your ramen and make different flavors of rice," don't. It's about the lack of variety. It's about the stress of always needing to find different exciting ways to jazz up what feels like the equivalent of peasant gruel, when all you want is the comfort meal you're too poor to afford.
If someone is asking for help with food, and they are specifically requesting MONEY, just give them some fucking money or move the hell along. They don't need your unsolicited advice. They don't need to hear you condescend to them about what you think they should be doing instead. Food banks are a huge help to many people, but for plenty of others, food banks aren't enough, or aren't accessible, or don't have foods they can actually eat. Don't assume malice, laziness, or ignorance from someone who says they can't make use of a food bank. They know what their body needs a lot better than you, a random stranger, do.
Some food banks are fucking predatory. Some are run by Christian churches who require you to attend services, even if you're not Christian. Some require you to prove you have a job. Some require you to debase yourselves for their amusement before they'll even consider throwing you scraps. Before you recommend a food resource, maybe check and see if it's actually a good one.
Hungry people are often tired, stressed, embarrassed and ashamed of needing help, or dealing with any number of other unpleasant emotions. Don't add to their stress by treating them like they're stupid or somehow deserve to be in poverty. I shouldn't have to say that, and yet every single time someone in my family posts about needing help with groceries, some jackass crawls out of the woodwork to give us unsolicited financial advice, as if we're too stupid to know how money works and are just bad at managing our bills. No, asshole, it's the capitalist system that's designed to crush people. Fuck off if you're not going to be helpful or kind.
i've found it, my favorite dungeon meshi panel
This is a real picture taken by photographer Keinichi Ohno. It's a single photo of a bird standing at the edge of some water with a wall and its reflection creating a fascinating optical illusion.
theo van gogh was the one who suggested that his older brother vincent start seriously painting. as soon as theo was gainfully employed he gave vincent around 15% of his own yearly salary for art supplies, lodging, and food. about 2/3rds of vincent's surviving letters were to theo (including vincent's earliest and last letters), all of which were found stored in theo's desk. theo's child, vincent willem, was born on january 31st, 1890, and vincent was so delighted by his nephew that he painted almond blossoms for him. vincent shot himself half a year later on july 29th, 1890. theo's distress at his brother's death worsened his syphilis symptoms and he died half a year after his brother on january 25th, 1891 (four days before vincent willem's first birthday). theo was reburied next to vincent in auvers-sur-oise at the request of theo's wife johanna.
Almond Blossoms, 1890, Vincent van Gogh
And that love lived on Theo's wife, Johanna, who was the one who pushed for the preservation of Vincent's paintings. Johanna who made sure that her husband's beloved brother would not be forgotten. Johanna who fought tooth and nail so that Theo and Vincent would never be forgotten. Johanna who carried the family legacy, who made sure that the works of Vincent would be kept in her possession. And then Vincent Willem, named for a uncle so loved, carried this legacy and founded the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam.
The van Gogh family history is deeply interwoven with love. It was the love of a brother that gave a young man the courage to paint and the resources to do so. It was the love of a woman for her husband and her husband's beloved brother that made that story known. And it was the love of a nephew, who was so deeply loved even if for such a short time, that made it possible for the world to know Vincent van Gogh.
I turn 30 next month so here’s what I learned in my 20s:
—don’t work for startups, they’re always one ‘innovative idea’ away adding ‘sell your kidneys on the black market’ to your job description.
—keeping a collection of basic OTC medicine on you will save your life one day. I recommend Advil, Imodium, and TUMS.
—those little single-use glasses cleaning wipes are 1000% worth the money
—overly self-depreciating jokes just make people uncomfortable, wean yourself off of them
—you can buy dehydrated mini marshmallows in bulk online and they’re a godsend for hot cocoa
—people don’t care if you have fidget toys on your desk they just want to play with them
—try to go to bed BEFORE the existential ennui kicks in
Also drink water and eat a plant
This is all GREAT. I turned 40 last week, so permit me to add what I learned in my 30s:
keep on not working for startups
sometimes there comes a point where the thing (fandom, hobby, friendship, romantic relationship) you loved no longer brings you joy. And that's okay. Try to mourn the loss, take joy in the memories, and don't burn any bridges in case ten years go by and you find yourself back in that fandom/hobby/relationship again
it turns out that (ugh) moderate regular exercise is (spit) good for you. The sooner you make it part of your life, the easier it'll be
related: if you throw yourself into a new exercise regime too hard and too fast, without stopping to rest or consider whether a particular move is good for you ... well, shoulder injuries are painful and consults with orthopedic surgeons are expensive
knees are bastards too
don't even get me started on ankles
there may come a time when your digestive system is too fragile for ibuprofin. I'm sorry
one day you're gonna wake up and realise you no longer give any fucks about some things that used to bother you
on the other hand, you might be alarmed to realise what you still give a fuck about
never get down on the floor without an exit strategy for getting back up
I turn 50 this year. what I have learned in my 40s:
"loving yourself" is less of a feeling and more of an action. you can start doing it any time and it will make your life better and better as you go on
this will happen incrementally - be patient
along those lines, if you haven't started making an active effort to quit shit-talking yourself, suck it up and do it
no, shut up. do it. "but it's haaaaard!" don't care. do it.
whether you like it or not, you are mortal and you need to go to the doctor for an annual checkup
stretch regularly - your future self will thank you
at some point you will encounter people much younger than you arguing passionately and incorrectly about history you personally remember and experienced
this will be infuriating and annoying
otoh, most other things just... will not matter to you as much
at some point you will shift from wanting to go out to being like "eh" and deciding to stay in. this is okay.
you will have absolutely no idea what The Youth are talking about and you will not care
but if you keep your mind open to new ideas you'll never be irrelevant
your company still doesn't love you - don't give them more than they pay you for
get a fucking hobby, especially a hobby that involves physically creating/handling something and/or moving your body in physical space. it will do you more good than you can imagine
Just turned 60 and let me say:
Find joy, every kind, it's always worth it
I'm talking that massive, never-ending Discord chat with your bestie? The one that makes you giggle through the day? It's not a "waste of time," it's what time was made for
If that's fanfic for your favorite characters who never even met on screen celebrate that!
If that's building a tiny fleet of snake villagers for your snake town and they just cover your mantel hell yes!
If that's collecting pillows and making a fort of them every weekend I'll be right over
Feeling and sharing joy is the whole point
This is too tempting…, so, I’m 74, and: don’t fund startups
Please keep stretching and exercise enough NOT to need an elaborate strategy to get up from the floor. IT MAY SAVE YOUR LIFE
Say bye to your employer as early as you possibly can, unless you really love your job. You won’t be sorry.
Keep doing the annual checkups 🙏🏼
Enjoy that fucking hobby you’ve acquired in your 50, or find something new. Do try new things & adventures.
“average person eats 3 spiders a year” factoid actualy just statistical error. average person eats 0 spiders per year. Spiders Georg, who lives in cave & eats over 10,000 each day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted
#tapping the reblog button with utmost care because i’m handling a historical artifact (via @malarkiness)
holy shit OP is not only still active but is still making absolutely banger posts in this exact style 11 years later
A 2025 update
I want slower packages delivered by transportation workers who are paid more to work less and I'm not kidding
@mortuarybees: #i think its deeply important for all of us to come to terms with the fact that its actually fine to be mildly inconvenienced
One of my FAV things I can select when buying from certain online stores is "send it to me later in one box instead of in many boxes so some bits come sooner." Less waste and hassle for everyone.
I am NEVER ordering a thing I need ASAP online. If I need it ASAP I am figuring out how to get it in person. It's faster.
Also my CVS pharmacy (which is 24-hours) loves me because when I come in early in the morning I don't mind waiting around for a few minutes so the pharmacist can finish filling whatever they're filling before helping me pick up my stuff. Like. Yup. I'll just stand here and read shit on my phone, this is not time sensitive.
Worth noting that this was normal for decades—anything faster was considered rush shipping. "I want it NOW" is only about ten years old.
