Brb replacing "I should" with "I have the option/opportunity to" in my internal monologue re: beating myself up over shit that needs doing. Let's see if that works.
It actually really did help and I did the laundry and cat boxes. Guess I'll keep trying that one.
THE UNEXPECTED SEQUEL:
"I should go do something useful."
The flat statement offers no direction; it does not lead to action, only self-recrimination.
The implied judgment of yourself as not currently being "useful" is toxic. It tells you that you are being bad and lazy.
My mom died in 2006, but sometimes it's like I hear her voice.....
"Useful" is ill-defined and an easily-moved goalpost.
The idea of people needing to be "useful" is the voice of oppression. Lots of -isms hide there. Including (Tim Curry voice) capitalism.
No really, literally this is the voice of everyone who has ever guilt-tripped or browbeaten you for not meeting their standards. Every parent, every boss, every teacher, every gatekeeper. It is the voice that harmed them so much they had to pass it on rather than reckon with it.
"What could I do to help myself out later?"
Is a dialogue you can engage with. Open-ended.
Properly frames any action as being helpful to yourself. It is a kindness. Kindness is important.
Sets you up to appreciate what you did later on when you say "Dang, that folded towel was real nice, made me feel real good pulling it out of the laundry closet. Thanks, past me!" Reinforcement!!!
Doesn't put you on the spot right now. You could just as easily ask "What can I do an hour from now to help myself out later?" as "What can I do now?" You can give yourself that beautiful airlock time to mentally prepare.
Being helpful, even slightly, even to no-one but yourself, is better for the spirit than being "useful". Capitalism doesn't give a shit about helpful. It wants to use you, and it teaches you that if you are not being useful, you are by necessity, useless. Our culture, based on capitalism, implants this toxic mindset in us in myriad ways, and we carry it into our private lives where it does not belong and we weaponize it against ourselves. Never think that your value is determined by usefulness. Even when you can't do anything, you aren't useless. The concept of usefulness/uselessness is an idea that means a lot when applied to objects. It has zero meaning when applied to human beings. Expunge it from your vocabulary. Do not use it for yourself, or for others. Ever.
Fuck capitalism. Be a comrade to yourself.
Don't be my mom. (Dead but also a bitch.)
Third revelation:
"I have to [blank]."
Not as good as:
"It is important that I [blank]."
"I have the opportunity to [blank]" sometimes isn't enough for tasks I truly hate and WILL avoid. How to overcome that? Certainly not by making it seem even worse by turning it into something I don't have a choice about!
I don't like scooping the cat litter or taking out the trash or brushing my teeth, but it is important that I do. "Have to" is not as helpful to me because it just says I have an obligation. Even if that is true, which it often is, I hate that phrase. "Have to." Ugh.
"It is important" reminds me of why I am doing it. So my cats have a clean potty. So my kitchen isn't stinky. So I get a good grade in Teeth.
I thought of this today and came to look and update this post. Now I see a couple people have mentioned something like this in comments. And a lot of folks are talking about the "shoulds" and their therapists and their personal growth or resolutions and it is so validating for me to see that.
I don't check notes ever, I had no idea this got so many of them. I'm very glad it did and I hope it continues to do so.
For everyone making the change, I'm proud of you.
For everyone who tried and kind of lapsed, here's your reminder: you can always dust yourself off and go back to applying this as best you can.
Level-Up Your Witchcraft
Find ways to practice daily. Start small with more energy manageable spellwork, like daily tea/kitchen magic. Try out planetary magic to help plan spells and rituals ahead of time. Daily practice helps novice witches to grow their abilities to handle and manipulate energy in greater capacities.
Daily prayer. Remember, praying doesn’t always have to be directed towards spirits or deities. Praying for your own personal power is extremely empowering. Here’s a great video from one of my favorite magical mentors on the topic.
Wear a crystal or oil programed as a magical enhancer to help amplify your will while casting. This was a game changer for me.
Discover & follow your path. Many witches are encouraged to learn many casting methods and types of magic when they are beginning their journey. I considered myself an eclectic witch for eight years before realizing what speciality of witchcraft fit best with me. Once a practitioner focuses on their most suitable path, things feel like they unlock naturally and magic feels more intense.
Read witchcraft adjacent nonfiction. As you dive deeper into most practices, what’s useful won’t be a correspondence cheat sheet or a spell book, but actual history and science. Reading books on quantum physics has helped me develop my own magical theory. Historical & geological references can help witches connect with their ancestral magic. When witches open their view of magic to include everything around them, any topic can become magical exploration and information for the grimoire. Correspondences can be discovered the old fashioned way, through discernment and for yourself.
Routine spell management. Reinforce wards or cast spells routinely in whatever manner works best for you. That could be weekly, monthly, or seasonally. Are you routinely cleansing under the New Moon? Maybe your wards are cast seasonally.
Write your own spells. Everyone loves a good spell book, but if all your casting are other people’s spells, you may not be reaching your full potential.
Meditate. Fifteen minutes a day will unlock more than you ever dreamed possible. I read in a mindfulness book once that meditating eliminates resistance, allowing what you’ve been asking for to flow into your life uninhibited. It also enhances your intuition and recalibrates your mind and body.
Master a method of divination. Tarot, runes, anything! Divination allows the witch to answer their own questions regarding spellwork, better plan, and communicate with allied spirits. It’s the first thing I would tell a young witch to learn.
Okay, so according to this post, @staff says they're listening to us, so...
Sound off, Tumblr! How do you feel about the latest update to the reblog and notes?

Random Fourth Wing headcanons because I was thinking about them again. These are mainly for fun and just my own opinion.
Liam is basically this world’s Robert Irwin. Too wholesome for his own good and loved by everyone. It’s how I pictured him the whole book and I can’t look past it. Don’t care about anyone else’s fancast, this is the only valid one for me.
Chradh and Sgaeyl are secretly best friends but they’re sooo competitive. In Garrick and Xaden’s first year they forced their riders into complicated moves just to outdo the other. Chradh is the only one that will occasionally take Sgaeyl down a notch because Tairn just… doesn’t.
Bodhi stress bakes. That’s it. That’s all I have. Don’t ask me why but I can see this man sneak into the kitchen to bake a cake at 2am because his idiotic cousin is dead set on giving him grey hair.
All the dragons gossip about their riders. I think that one is a pretty common headcanon but it just fits so well. Andarna has been planning Violet and Xaden’s wedding since pretty much the day those two got together and she has appointed herself as the Flower Girl.
Garrick acts like he’s more of an idiot than he really is. I think he uses his size to his advantage because he knows everyone looks at him and only thinks big dumb brute so that’s what he acts like but he uses it to make people underestimate him.
Bodhi secretly always wanted to be a Healer.
Sawyer and Bodhi were in the same squad at the beginning of their first year and were actually pretty good friends until Sawyer became one of the unbonded.
Xaden is a great singer. Don’t know why but it suits him. He’d write the most heart wrenching songs.
Garrick’s foster family was abusive. Xaden tells Violet not all of the marked kids were lucky enough to end up with good families after their parents were executed. Most of these kids don’t seem close enough to Xaden that they would admit they were in a bad situation. Xaden and Bodhi were nobility so Navarre wouldn’t have risked anything happening to them and we know that Liam was fostered with Xaden. So that leaves Imogen or Garrick as possibilities and of those two I don’t feel Xaden and Imogen are as close as he is with Garrick. I don’t think Garrick would’ve said anything but Xaden would’ve figured it out after a while.
Imogen might’ve also been in an abusive home, especially considering what her signet is. Garrick’s distance wielding could mean he wants to run from something so it could honestly be both of them.
All the Marked kids (especially the Inner Circle) are incredibly traumatised and don’t make the best decisions because of that. They’re also super codependent even if they hide it in public.
Ridoc and Sawyer had a thing before Sawyer got with Jesinia. It was never more than a friends with benefits situation but they absolutely fucked.
If Violet weren’t so painfully straight she and Jesinia would’ve also absolutely been a thing in the past.
Xaden and Garrick fucked at one point. You cannot change my mind on this. Two trauma-bonded boys thrown into the most dangerous quadrant where everyone and their grandmother has it out for them? Xaden the Frodo Baggins to Garrick’s Sam? The Steve Rogers to his Bucky? Yeah they fucked. Probably right after Threshing and it went on for a good while, most likely until Xaden took an interest in Violet. I will die on this hill.
Anyway that’s what I have. Hope you enjoyed reading this ☺️
The only reason I kind of joined the Fourth Wing fandom, is because my mind decided to hyper fixate on a side character in the series. I have loved Garrick Tavis since I first met him on the page and unfortunately I feel he’s a very underrated character.
So, I wrote a little something for Garrick week.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/80336381
It’s the first time I publish anything on ao3, so I hope I did it right. It’s also the first time I publish anything in over a decade. I do write fic occasionally but rarely publish anything because I’m terrible at finishing things.
Hope you like it!
Honeyed Lips
This glamour is designed to help you appear more persuasive. This can be helpful when applying for a job, public speaking, or convincing friends/family/lovers. BE AWARE - this type of glamour is inherently manipulative and should only be used to help you convince others and make people more inclined to listen to what you have to say.
MATERIALS
10g Shea Butter
10g Beeswax
10g Coconut Oil
1 Tsp Honey (Local if you can)
5 drops Sweet Orange Oil
On a double boiler (medium/low heat) melt the Shea Butter, Beeswax and Coconut Oil. Turn of heat and stir clockwise as you add the Honey and Sweet Orange Oil. Sing as you stir:
Smooth as butter,
Sweet as honey,
Enchant my words,
To be bright and sunny.
With honeyed lips,
And charming smiles,
Those who hear me
Are not hostile.
To my words,
They shall listen,
And be convinced
By my proposition.
Let it cool in a container of your choice (I like a small metal tin). Once cool, apply to your lips and repeat the above chant. The heat of your lips will activate it.

the silmarillion is wild because you read it and you're like huh okay, and then you read lotr and it turns out everyone's just going around doing their own thing while the surviving elves are living through the final chapters of a post-apocalyptic horror story
rivendell's a pretty chill place, right? everyone gets along splendidly. dream retirement home et cetera. solid chance the guy you're having afternoon tea with has either survived or personally committed war crimes. also the reason it's so chill is elrond has this magic ring that makes it so the whole place exists slightly outside normal time
galadriel's been around since the beginning, like, for pretty much all of middle-earth's history you understand, she has Seen it all and despite what you may have been led to believe is at all times this close to snapping. also the reason lothlorien is so chill is she has this magic ring that makes it so the whole place exists slightly outside normal time
i can't emphasize enough how much of a post-apocalyptic horror story thranduil lives in. homeland destroyed and half his people massacred. has fucken sauron in his backyard and the spawn of the primordial beast that eats light puttering about on his lawn. a dragon lives next door. does NOT have a magic ring and is therefore obliged to rule over his murderforest in normal time
just so we're all on the same page here, legolas' day job before joining the fellowship was to hunt the spawn of the primordial beast that eats light and it's not like, a big deal or anything. he just has to do it. he's used to it.
'elves are leaving middle-earth and it's so sad :(' they have ptsd samwise.
I always forget there are maga people on tumblr, this doesn’t feel like a website you’d find them on, so to keep them away:

A Little Trance Reference Guide
Disclaimer: These are things I’ve learned to do through trial and error. My advice might work for you, or it might not work for you. I don’t have many resources, as this is something I simply learned through working with Spirits, along with trial and error.
What is trance?
How I define and experience it, trance is going in a state where I’m relaxed, less in control, and allow myself to become a conduit for either information, energy, or imagery; sometimes it’s two of those things at once, or even all three. I use trance during hedge walking (astral travel), introspective spirit work, and some spell work. In part one I’ll be discussing three forms of trance that I use, along with things I help to induce trance and aid in the process. In part two I will discuss what type of trance I like to pair with what aids, and what those combos have been useful for me for. Also a lot of this is off the dome from just experience being a witch on the specific path I'm on, and experience with using trance for my spirit work, hedge walking, and some spell work– so I don’t have resources to cite.
Types of Trance
Ecstatic trance - This form of trance is high energy, and involves a lot of movement. The movement is usually big, and oftentimes can be symbolic. Light Trance - This form of trance is not so high energy. It involves little movement. Deep Trance - This form of trance requires either no movement, or very little movement depending on what you do to help achieve it.] Note: All of these will be discussed further in part two, along with examples of each type of trance.
Trance Aids (things to aid in helping you achieve trance)
Herbs
Forewarning: When using any herbs please be mindful of your allergies, any medications you’re taking that may interact with herbs, along with any other health concerns, and the legality of herbs where you are and your ability to use them.
Herbs like mugwort and chamomile have helped me with trance. Mugwort is an herb that has associations with second sight, visions, and clairvoyance. While I’m not sure if chamomile has any direct ties that are widely known with its help with visions and the like, I have used it before to help aid in the process of relaxing myself to better be “present” in my trance activities and it worked very well for me. You can make tea with chamomile, but I would not suggest making tea with mugwort. Like, you can, but the price you pay in taste is not nearly worth it. I’d suggest burning mugwort to get the same hard hitting effects that will help you with trance. The downside to this is mugwort does have a pungent smell– so crack a window if that bothers you, or also if you have sensitive fire alarms.
Marijuana (18+)
Smoking a joint can be very helpful with aiding hedge walking, and trance! If you’re not used to smoking, I’d say start off with a hit or two of a joint, and increase from there.
Oils & Ointments
Flying ointment is something I use for all of my trance activities– it doesn’t matter if it’s ecstatic, light, or deep. Flying ointment (or oil) is a salve that has herbs or roots that’s properties are associated with spirit travel, clairvoyance, and spirit sight. I wrote a post about how to make your own flying ointment, but there’s many wonderful etsy sellers who make great ointments! Here’s two different options at different price points: CatCaveCrafts ($10) + DeadLandsApothacary ($25). I like to put it on with intention, and ask the plants in the oil to aid in my session. You can rub it on your inner wrists, behind your ears, and the bottoms of your feet. I also like to anoint my spirit eye (the point in the middle of your forehead) with it, and the top of my head.
Spirit Guides
(Disregard if not applicable to your practice.)
If you have Spirits that you have relationships with, there’s always the option to ask them to help with your sessions! Spirits can range from Deities, to animal spirits, to fae. It’s dependent on you, who you feel comfortable asking, and sometimes the purpose of what you’re doing. For example: If I’m doing hedge walking and I want help not only crossing over, but being protected, I know I can ask the Ferryman (a Guide I have a relationship with) for help by simply asking him to guide the session after I put on my oils, but before I start the actual activity.
Music
I use music as a base component for all my trance activities, because it helps not only filter out the noise of my house, but it also helps my ADHD be not so distracting. For me I like to repeat songs with heavy drums, repetitive chanting or sounds, and I usually like to go for songs in other languages because it helps me not to focus on the lyrics vs. what I'm trying to do. A few songs I've found helpful: Traust by Heilung // Drumming by Drums of Trinidad Tobago // Hagal by Wardruna // Fire by Oakville Choir for Children // Vibrant Night by African Tribal Orchestra // Whirling Dervish by Omar Faruk Tekbilek // Tyr by Wardruna Depending on what sort of trance you're trying to achieve, some songs will work better than others. If you want to do a deep relaxing trance, using a song that's too energetic might not help. Also, these songs are songs that are just examples of what I like. I used Drumming by Drums of Trinidad & Tobago because I have relationships with deities from the African diaspora. It works well for me for that reason. The songs are to provide an example and reference for things that can be helpful, but by no means will 100% work for you. Use songs that speak to you, your spirit, and even your spirit life. Be okay with trial and error here!
Ideally Part 2 of this will be posted this Friday (3/18), so keep your eye out! :) I'll update in the comments of this post when it's up, and I'll also edit this post to include the link.
