Actually I do have a problem with those cartoony style cover for hyper sexual romance books and it’s like the inverse problem for me of people referring to everything as porn

Becauase my god those covers are so fucking unhorny they should be ashamed

Like ok ok ok half the time I see the discourse around this it’s people getting mad because they seem like they’re marketing “porn” to kids with those covers and like, that’s a stupid “think of the children” argument to shame grown adults for liking sexual content. And they’re clearly marketing to adults who have previously only ever been comfortable reading YA but that’s not even what I’m talking about and a whole other issue

What I’m talking about is those cartoony ass covers are so fucking bland that I would never pick one up randomly and give it a try knowing nothing about it, because it looks like such a bland hallmark romance and I want to read about fucking

Like we used to be a society. We used to have full painted bodice ripper covers with like tits and cock about to bust out of clothing. And it doesn’t even have to be that blatant you can make it horny and be subtle about it but modern every hyper sexual romance is giving 2010s indie graphic novel in the worst way. We used to make horny covers for porn and you knew it was gonna be horny porn when you looked at it. Now it’s so fucking boring and no one is finding that hot babes

My grandma just called and, among other things, said “You have hips. That’s good! Men like hips!” and then she interrupted herself to say “Women like hips. People of your preferred gender like hips. I can never remember”  And I was like “Thanks grandma! My preferred gender is none of them, no thanks.” and she was like “Okay, no one will comment on your hips!” very self satisfied, like “aha, I have figured it out” I think like half her grandkids are some variety of not-straight and she can’t always remember which is which but she is the epitome of like “she’s a little confused, but she’s got the spirit!”

I feel like I need to share this because idk if Europeans are familiar with the presence of Aldi in the US, but at least especially in my area they’ve been growing a lot recently. Like Aldi bought out some local failing grocery chains where I live (Louisiana) and have opened Aldis in all these somewhat rural communities and small towns, which for the record I’m fine with

But as a result of this they are advertising a lot more in my area and also in many cases, the people in these areas have never been confronted with Aldi or any European grocery store. So the ads that Aldi is pushing out to its new US customer base feature a cowboy shopping at Aldi who is explaining to new Aldi customers how Aldi works. Like this cowboy is explaining you gotta put a quarter in the shopping cart and why there are very little name brands. A cowboy is how they want to reach their American customer base. I mean, as someone who as worked in a zoo, this is fairly true.

Obvious disclaimer that you shouldn't have wild animals as pets.

But like, cheetahs are the only large cats that keepers will do free contact with. Hell, even most small cats don't get free contact. (Because small cats can be VICIOUS. They'll have a baby pallas cat wearing thicker gloves than when handling an owl. Because small cats can just be vicious.)

Like I think the only other cat at our zoo where I've seen free contact with was servals? Because I know they've used servals in shows to demonstrate their natural jumping ability. But I know servals can sometimes have a mean temper as well. Meanwhile they'll do the cheetah run and afterwards put the mic by the cheetahs and it's just like an engine with them purring. It's fascinating to watch when the message in every other large animal is "no free contact because it's dangerous even when they're born in captivity".

Legit if any wild animal could be adapted to a pet it would be cheetahs lmao. Only problem is they can be skittish and very anxious and that's why they're often raised around dogs in zoos to gain confidence.

There's actually a theory, though there's very little supporting evidence, that maybe part of why cheetah's do so poorly in the wild is because they're feral rather than wild. That it's just possible that Egypt didn't just tame cheetahs, but actually domesticate them fully, and that all living cheetahs are descended from that domesticated cheetahs.

It would explain why they seem to be so poorly adapted to their supposed natural environment, if it's actually not their natural environment because they're a domesticated species evolved to live in a palace in Egypt.

Again it's probably not true, but it's an interesting theory, and it would explain why they suck so much at feeding themselves in the wild. The bits that make it unlikely are the lack of actual historical evidence and the fact that they also are really really hard to breed in captivity. Though they actually breed only a little more successfully in the wild, and their odds of making it to adulthood are smaller.

They're one of the rare cases where human interference is a pretty small component (habitat loss isn't a non-issue) of why they're endangered, and humans are propping them up a lot more than harming them. These animals are such anxious wimps that sometimes vultures steal their food.

It would also explain the genetic bottleneck at about 10,000 BCE. The bottleneck was not the species near extinction, but rather its domestication. I'm no biologist, and don't know enough about the details of genetics, but from what I could glean of this papers: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3531615/ It appears (according to what I can interpret, please correct me if I'm wrong) they are noting there was a major genetic split between the Asiatic and African cheetahs that, when calculating average mammalian genetic mutation rate, would evolutionarily have occurred between 32,000 and 67,000 years ago. However, said genetic variations COULD be anthropogenically driven (selective breeding), and if that were the case, the split would have happened anywhere between 4,700 and 44,000 years ago. So we have a genetic bottleneck of the African cheetah roughly 12,000 years ago, which lines up precisely into the "logarithmic middle" of the potential age of the genetic split between the African and Asiatic cheetahs, if that split were done through domestication, not evolution. I don't think we can really say that there's no real evidence, but more a matter of people not wanting to put the pieces together in that way, because of the fear of the implications that it might cause. Potentially we don't want to face just how entwined we are with nature in this world's history.

Exactly. I wasn't sure off hand whether or not the genetic bottleneck could be attributed to domestication or if it was provably a completely separate phenomenon, and I didn't want to guess and couldn't be bothered to do research. So I just shared what I know from memory.
