so usually you’d answer the phone by saying something like “good morning emergency department can i help” or “good morning emergency department registrar speaking”
if i’m very tired it might be “g’morning, ED, reg”
so you can imagine how much i lost my shit when the nurse in charge answered the phone at 4am with “HEWWO?”
One of my coworkers works at 3 of our rural hospitals, including my unit. The other day, after a full moon-esque shift, she answered the phone “hey this is Sarah at.....the hospital”
It was the point in the shift where you were going to either laugh or cry, but I had to walk away so she could talk on the phone while I laughed myself to tears down the hall. Yep. You’ve called the hospital. Which is where I’m at. I promise I know where I’m at.
i had a similar experience as an FY1 covering 10+ wards overnight, when i called the lab at 0700 and said “hi this is the surgical F1 i’m calling from ward...er...ward something i don’t know where i am?”
while the dayshift HCA who’d just arrived pointed sympathetically at the big sign opposite me that said “WELCOME TO WARD 5″
From The Washington Post. Damn
Do not let them make you numb.
Med school exams be like
Question: a patient presents with [very specific set of stereotypical symptoms] …
Me: YES I KNOW THIS ONE I’M SO GLAD I STUDIED IT
Question: … and is diagnosed with [syndrome]
Me: oh no
Question: given the likely treatment, what entree should they avoid during their birthday meal ten years from now?
Me: …
This is why I want to give birth at home with a BLACK midwife.
Hi, I’m a black midwife. Hit me up when you’re ready 😊
Straight Men just Be Like That sometimes
Some people in the notes keep defending Straight White Men while other notes just explain that it’s Facts:
Like… This post isn’t about forgetting a name/age because of memory loss, social anxiety or dyslexia. This post is specifically about how Straight Men aren’t involved enough in their kid’s education and well-being. It’s about the inequity of gender roles, and how men aren’t expected to care too much about their children.
We have a concept for this in French: “la charge mentale” (the mental load). It explains how women are expected to do all the chores and to remember everything which is relevant about the children’s development, while the men just… aren’t.

if you literally dont know how to spell ur kids name because of “women take care of the kids” or whatever then what the fuck are you doing my dude
reminded me of this video

Deadass how dads are. I was legitimately SHOCKED when I asked my dad if he even knew what high school I was attending, he got it right after a few seconds to think. But like how do these dads think it’s okay to not know literally jack shit about their kids?
My dad thought I was left handed for 13 years, then after 5 more years, I reminded him about it and he was like “wait… you’re not?”
How many times do I have to remind him I’m right handed
My dad didn’t know what my first words were and he and my mom lived together until I was 4.
The only straight men I’ve seen who aren’t like this (with exceptions of course nothing is ever certain) are oldest brothers.
It has literally always been a lie. These lies have killed millions of Americans over the years. It has cost the US Trillions of dollars in lost efficiency and higher healthcare costs over the years. It has helped drag down the life expectancy of the US, meaning, ultimately, that Americans have lost hundreds of millions of years from their lives.
It was always a lie.
oh sweet sweet sounds of 80s synthesizers, alleviate me
my new flat is literally in front of my school so every time i look out of the window i'm reminded of how soon (less than two weeks!) it starts again.
400% of mental illness is thinking this is probably just how hard life is for everyone and you just can’t handle it because you’re a whiny baby who isn’t trying hard enough.
Me in history class: Wow, humanity has been through some fascinating times! I wonder if I’ll ever live through major historical events!
Me now: NO NO NO NO NO I WANT TO GET OFF THIS RIDE

I imagine this post sees a significant surge in attention every time something New And Horrible happens, but I’d wager a bet that Covid-19 has caused the biggest surge yet.
This existed BEFORE the Coronavirus?
turned this in for my biology assignment today online school is going well
Everytime I hear "a 9/11 a day," I revert back to 13 and need to sit down for a moment til I can breathe again.
along the same vein...
As of May 7, 2020, 76,503 Americans are confirmed dead of COVID-19. To put this in perspective:
58, 209 Americans died in the Vietnam War (1961-1975)
54, 246 Americans died in the Korean War (1950-1953)
25, 000 Americans died in the American Revolution (1775-1783)
15, 000 Americans died in the War of 1812 (1812-1815)
13, 283 Americans died in the Mexican-American War (1846-1848)
4,576 Americans died in the Iraq War (2003-2011)
Also: The annual number of deaths in the USA from infectious disease is about 75,000. That’s twelve months’ worth of deaths. We are slightly over the annual death count for infectious disease after only four months and seven days.
Don’t kid yourself that this is normal. This is not even remotely normal.
The amount of charity Dolly Parton participates in, especially her efforts to combat child illiteracy, delights me.
Dolly’s good people.
